  1. That really hit a nerve, having lost someone in a car crash. I'm dreading my kids driving but that's not the only problem is it? When you're driving you're at the mercy of every idiot you happen to meet.. frightening.
  2. Can anyone who's organising or who has been to this show today (Sunday) tell me if it's poss to get cars up to the show rings? Is it the usual drive through the entrance barriers and pay route or walk in and pay? Thanks
  3. Don't want to be funny and I know there will be people who disagree but BASC is an organisation that has seriously lost it's way and I would never (along with plenty of other people) give them any of my hard earned cash especially not £66. You will get very similar insurance for £30 from the National Gamekeeper's Organisation.
  4. Is there anybody on here with experience of releasing fairly large number of ducks? After a bit of information, firstly if they were being fed Barley how much would you be expecting to use, a figure of bags (feed bags) per day for a 1000 would be useful. Or any other quantity you want to use!
  5. I've worked with lads that have been to both Newton Rigg and Sparsholt and found the lads from newton rigg were better prepared for work and the "real world". The big advantage in my eyes is you will get more experience with Grouse keepering as well as low ground stuff if you go to Newton Rigg, keeps your options open a bit more. lilvixen's OH
  6. Better stick these FACTS up in your local paper mate and advertise yourself as the worlds best Gamekeeper, i am sure there will be land owners fighting over you to be there keeper? I am not writing this for an argument mate but if "anybody" took your advice on numbers of poults needed there shoot would be well and truly f***ed from day 1. [/quot these FACTS are something we simply went from lab tastic, we put down an large volume of birds, and always got our return. i wouldnt think it advisory to advertise our wealth of birds in OUR LOCAL PAPER AS YOU STATE. as would surely attract wro
  7. Have to agree with you nathgoon. Just to add a couple of things, if you are one of the many lads looking to get a start you have to make yourself stand out from the crowd. In my opinion you can't beat an apprenticeship/nvq but if you choose to go to college use your time wisely. Get as many tickets as you can and don't spend your holidays sat on your arse, especially the summer when you could be grafting on a rearing field somewhere. A bit of time working for free could pay dividends when you need a reference or the keeper you've been helping hears of a job! Another thing please think very
  8. Sadly I can confirm the above to be true, fortunately the brother is three hours drive away so i'm not sure the "extras" would be worth travelling for!
  9. Would be nice if he got 2k but thing the grant goes to the employer! There isn't any lodging available so he's looking at getting a local lad. Thanks for those that replied. Just because he, and looks like a few others, was on £50 a week wasn't suggesting that was what he was thinking of paying a trainee. The minimum legal wage is £95 a week, I think they're looking at paying about £120/week.
  10. Howlbeck pebbles was I believe full sister to Howlbeck Piper who produced some working stuff but also had a bit of a suspect temperament. Again though both those dogs would likely be several generations back in anything these days and very diluted. Hope you gave her a happy retirement after that seeing as that would be at least her 7th litter!
  11. Best place to look probably would be the continent, however not sure many dogs do much beyond "trials". In the uk I don't think there is anybody with dogs from the original registration regularly testing there dogs as they should be. There are some people who registered dogs when it reopened that work them but I've seen a couple of dogs from some of these "latecomers" and wasn't overly impressed. There is the odd dog that does the job but consistent lines of registered parsons, very much doubt you'll find it in Uk. what faults did the late comers have, if you dont mind? the dogs we

  13. Windynook is pretty much the closest you'll get to Howlbeck these days, but definately not bred for their working abilities.
  14. thank you mate, i have that dog. Tetley (after the T bag) actually i have more than one of them. But his name is very fitting steady away very refreshing very fittin name mate.. I can vouch for Tetley, definately the 1st dog I would have out of your kennel, just shame about the owner
  15. My husband is looking into taking on a trainee keeper probably to do an NVQ while working here as well. If any of you are a trainee or if you are a keeper and employ a trainee could you please give me an idea of wages? (PM if preferred) He was on £50 a week (10 years ago) when he started and wants to know if going rate has changed! Thanks in advance for any help.
  16. Anybody fancy a day out tomorrow? i've had four beaters drop out!
  17. Paddy is cleaning his rifle and accidentally shoots his wife. He dials 999. Paddy says "It's my wife, I've accidentally shot her. I've killed her" Operator "Please calm down sir. Can you first make sure she really is dead?" CLICK,BANG Paddy "OK, done that, what next?
  18. Absolutely shocking, but of course you do put your trust into these people, what else can you do? Trouble is they act like god many of them and usually all stick together when cornered. Really hope your bitch doesn't take too long to heal... I had a terrier bitch rip the entire cover of her chest/stomach off jumping barb wire... i found here hanging upside down over the fence  , she made good recovery thankfully after a similar nice vets bill... knew someone who's field trial Lab dog has his credentials 50% ripped off by the stuff too evil bloody stuff Not sure if the stu
  19. Hi, Can see where you're all coming from but I wouldn't jump the gun just yet. I had a Lab that I knew the parents of and knew the breeder well enough to trust and she was the spit of your bitch and I've seen others that look similar. When I first read your post, before I saw the photo I was expecting much more of a cross-bred looking thing than that! Not sure I'd worry to be honest, as long as she does the job
  20. I now have proof, winky uses Plummer blood in his dogs!

  21. Thats a very bold statement saying most employers go straight to sparsholt! I wouldn't. Plenty still think experience and a personal reccomendation come before bits of paper from a college. I'm not saying some qualifications aren't important and the atv, chain saw, pest control courses etc definately help. Before signing up to a full time course I would look into getting a placement for an NVQ or at the very least spend as much spare time as you can helping a local keeper. It is a bold statment but it is also very true. If you were a Head Keeper on an estate and two candidates applied
