  1. I would imagine they have some type of bobcat or lynx up in Norway, Finland, Sweden, etc. I have never been to Europe so there is so much I don't know about the area. I saw that video of Andrew's (I forget his last name) in the lurchres as fox dogs thread before it was pulled off of U-Tube. I think it's for sale now. That was a pretty good bit of dog work. A pile of people crashed on it for the dogs not being hard enough while fighting the fox but ignored the work it took to get that fox found and stopped. To me that's crazy! I'll bet that guy catches more fox with those dogs than t
  2. As some of you have noticed, I've bred a litter of lurchers that I will be using on bobcats and other game. I was wondering if any of you run cats of any kind over there in Europe. My guess is that it is a BIG NO-NO in most places but I would figure that there is somewhere over there that it can be done leagally. Does any one have any experience with lurchers and cats? I would like to hear any thing you have to say about it and how the dogs run them.
  3. Love a black dog! Mikey's on the injured list for a few more days. He blew off his thumb pads and tore a toenail out the other day. That dog is going to kill himself in the bush. I have a small piece of woods between the driveway and my back dog yard and it's full of pines with all sorts of branches that are small straight and low and he'll run a rabbit through there barely holding back. I'm sure he's going to be a one eyed dog soon if he doesn't skewer himself and tip over one of these times. He can run a track and keep giving himself another shot at snatching them. I slipped him in to
  4. Saluki246, I'm betting you don't live in wolf country. They are nasty critters. I sat down with David Mench (former lead wolf biologist for N. America now retired) and he showed me some of his video footage when I was in college. It's the stuff that will never make the documentaries. I've seen first hand what they'll do to a hound...there ain't much left after around 12 minutes, just mittens, cap and tail. They do actively hunt the hounds and they do it on a regular basis. Not just in the spring when the pups are out. They do it all year. When you are in the wolves territory it's prett
  5. I do live in wolf country and have seen what they can do to a hound. They are bad ass as long as they have backup. If you run a single they can be successfully run but you had better have several good fighters or at least good bay dogs to hold them. It's still not legal to run them in my state (not sure if they are legal to run with dogs in any state but off the top of my head, I don't think so. It's a load of crap! The anti's are in the way of that one so far. I've seen plenty of them around but I don't see very many compared to the number of tracks in the area. I cut a pretty big wolf
  6. Dan, There's no where that safe or private any more. That's how I look at it. I don't know of another US based site that regularly talks about hunting with sight hounds though.
  7. Dan, Have you ever seen a G.H. x Plott? My buddy has a litter and I've been watching them grow (6 months old). They look very nice and if they treat a coyote any worse than they treat each other they're going to be bad-ass dogs. He's not socialized them properly so I'm not interested in getting one but I am interested in how they will run. Any predictions I can get would be appreciated. I'll have to post a question on Vargy's and see if anyone else has any experience with them. They sure are a good looking bunch a dogs.
  8. Zack, I've got a very nice stag female that can catch nearly anything in the US. I'm taking her down to breed her to a nice gamey boarder collie this evening. If your interested give me a call. I'm only looking to breed one for me and I'll be selling the rest for costs. I'm making this for an addition to my bobcat pack and with the collie, it might be a little soft for coyotes, bear and pigs but should be tough enough for all else. Give me a call if your interested in getting a pup out of known breeding. ATB
  9. That's what I figured, thanks for clearing that up.
  10. As some of you know I'm from the states and we don't have a history of using netting for hunting here. I saw an ad for Fox Netting and I'm curious if anyone can fill me in on what kind of nets they are and how they are used. I don't think we can use netting here for hunting but it would be a handy tool to understand for doing some animal damage control work. Could anyone give me a short explanation or recomend a good book on the subject? Thanks in advance...
  11. I didn't figure I'd find anyone who had seen some US dogs. I'm going to sit back and be patient. Thanks for all of the comments though. I'm new to the sighthounds and it all is educational for me.
  12. It's what we call a group of dogs here that are mostly like a GH/DH cross but can have all sorts of stuff thrown in there over the years. Tecnically I would say that it is simply a longdog or coursing dog. The big difference is that people over here hunt them on coyotes, bear, hogs, fox and anything else that thinks it wants to die on the run. The dog pictued is not my dog but a dog "stag" that I like the looks of and it's a better standing profile of a stag than the few pictures I have of my own stag female. Another difference seems to be that our "stags" seem to use their nose a bit more
  13. I would imagine that not many have been brought over (if any). I don't see where you would have the need for them but if they were there it would be interesting to find out how they stack up. Has anyone from over there even seen any of them and be willing to comment? They look about like this:
  14. Well, I never met him. He just seems so from his writing. What was he like?
  15. He had me at Rouges and Running Dogs. It's why I got interested in lurchers. Here in the US there are not many lurchers around in the whole country and certainly not where I grew up (in a suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota). If I would have had that book when I was a teenager, I certainly wouldn't have been doing much of anything else. Whatever Brian Plummer is or isn't, I'm very thankful that he was interested in sharing what he knew. His world of dogs has reached across the world and made many people more than happy to sit in one spot for as long as it took to read what he wrote. He see
  16. I've never been much for hog hunting but that actually looked like a blast! That cut doesn't look to bad but it's close to the knee and I'll be that man is going to be limping for a while. That was a big pack of hogs and I was thinking the same thing as Forest.
  17. If you can get a 50 ml syringe or larger and inject water underneith the skin the dog won't die if it is parvo. Also, if you can get a gram of vitamin C into the dog each day, it will recover much faster and you won't want to be sticking the dog five times a day for very long. Should be no problem. Parvo isn't that dangerous if you know what to do.
  18. If you've got them wormed well it's probly Coccidiosis. The birds carry it around and most folks overlook it. We use a couple of things to get rid of it. The first and likely the easiest is Albon. One time and it's done and the dogs put weight on very quickly. The one I use the most because it's cheaper is Sulfadimethoxide. I buy it in a gallon jug and put 60 cc in a five gallon bucket of water and that's all they get to drink for at least five days. Works every time and keeps the food bill down. Most folks keep woming the heck out of their dogs thinking they missed something and th
  19. Get out man! Come to America. There are many places you can get out for days and not see one person much less a "task force" of jack-asses. We can use all the good country folk we can get. People worry about visas and such...it's a lot easier avoiding trouble with that than it is to live in a land that is completely screwed where you have to own a certain look of a dog just to be able to go hunting without getting reported. It's insane and I couldn't imagine putting up with it. We've got all the mexicans up here illegally and they find all sorts of work, houses and everything they need.
  20. Quixand Lizard King won the nationals in both race organizations this year.
  21. This just got moved to the geral discussion part of the board. Pretty pathetic. This discussion was for the lurcher guys. I hope a bunch of you boys saw this and got to thinking. See ya.
