I'm with Moorside on this. If you can't hunt wolves or at least bear legally, you'll have nothing to test them on. In the US, wolf seasons have opened back up but the anit's are fighting the "running with dogs" idea first because that's where they're getting the most success in fighting it. When they opened the wolf hunting two years ago, here in Wisconsin, a judge put an injunction on the provision that allowed running them with dogs. That kept the doggers away for the first year but the injunction ended and it was allowed this year. I know several groups of guys that are hunting them

Fantastic picture, what a cutie. I'd have that one hanging in the front room. I hope to get a sweet shot like that of my daughter with my big dogs...wait intil the wife sees this one!

Ivebeen has no reason to lie, he didn't have a dog in the meet. He's new to all of this so you might have to ask him specific questions. Here is link to a NOFCA page that lists all of the Grand Course qualifiers with links to the results pages back to the 2001-2002 season. This should answer some questions. http://www.nofca.org/standings/

I'll see if I can get the man on here. He'd be able to answer some of the questions. On of the two dogs mentioned might have also been the first whippet to win the grand course at seasons end a few years ago. I asked him how tall those two dogs were and he said he didn't measure or ask but he's 5'11" (a little over 180 cm) and the dogs came up to his knee caps. That's got to be from 22"-24" (55.9 cm-61 cm). I've talked about this line of whippets a few times on here. There is from one to three in the top ten every year now. That's against all competition. It's all pure breds (as far as

It may be a bit of an anomaly here in the US and maybe the best Salukis weren't on the field this day and the best whippets were but it's got to make a few people curious about this statement. I got an e-mial from a friend in California that I helped find some whippets. He's new to them but he's in the only area of the country that has open field coursing competitions on hares (that I know of). He went to his first meet recently and sent me this e-mail: "Got to handle Barossa and a few other whippets at a NOFCA meet today. Saw Versace outrun 2 salukis today, from the slip to the cat

Thanks for all of the comments!

Casso, I understand that really well. I see that to one degree or another in all the dogs I train. You paint a good picture of how it works with the saluki. If I find the dogs I have now are lacking in toughness or wind, I think I'll do just fine with the saluki cross.
-
Maxhardcore- Are you talking about a saluki or a saluki x b.c. ? I'm definitely not interested in a pure saluki, I'll stick with the stags where that is concerned. They may not beat the saluki in endurance but they are not far behind out of the right line.
-
I guess what I really mean to ask is how smart are the saluki x b.c.'s compared to the g.h. x d.c.'s. Also, if the saluki x b.c. is not quite as smart as the g.h. x b.c., does the added toughness, feet and game sense make up for that. I realize some of this is pretty subjective but all experienced answers are welcome.

What about the brains ( on the saluki lurcher)?
-
Does a cross with a collie impart the same brains to the cross the way it does with a greyhound?
-
First, I have never even watched a Saluki run in the flesh. I have no experience with them whatsoever. I am under the impression that they are dumb as a box of rocks and do not consider listening to their owner as a priority. Are the Saluki crosses purely for coursing competition and fire the dog in there type hunts or are they of any real value to a lurcherman? Also, how are the crosses for intelligence? (ex. saluki X gh. x collie)

I'm guessing he's going to get taller. In this country, he might be a bit tall. I'm going to push him like the rest and find out over this winter. Some big dogs can handle it but it depends on his attitude. Ben Lilly- They're doing to job. There is a litter of the same that is a year older and are catching regularly now. Most of those are in the flatlands of Illinois. That's way easier country for this type of dog. Yeti has his work cut out for him. Jigsaw- There is no photo record. Gaffer- To many people over there. I feel crowded here. I don't know how you guys don'

He's pretty smart so far. He's been good at figuring things out and has been loading, retrieving and coming when called from very young. We'll see how much game sense he's got over this winter. He's an easy dog to like.

Jigsaw- It's misleading, I'm adopted. I'm actually a Norwegian. I sure did like our family gatherings though. My uncle worked for Schmidt brewery when they were still making bear and he would pull in a whole beer truck with the taps coming right out of the side of the truck. Pretty exciting with all of the games, dancing, fighting and crazy crap going on. A lot better than stinky fish and stupid jokes, HA! My Dad and Uncle would take turns throwing all the young girls into the swimming pool only they would hang on to their swimsuits and they'd hit the water naked on one half or the othe

Here's a picture of my 8 month old stag male, "The Yeti". I'm just starting him on small stuff lately but he's doing well and learning his trade. I'll let him show me how fast he wants to move along but he should have been on a few coyotes by this spring.
-
It seems to me like the original idea of the post was to get people thinking but he should have run it by you before using your dogs picture.
-
I don't remember the guys name. The picture and original part of the post is gone on BGH last time I looked. I'm glad it's gone at the least, if you didn't want it there in the first place. You'll have to check the rest of that post for clues.

Were any of those dogs over 24"?

Socks- Your only the second person to pick her out. She's got the most going on in her head of the bunch at this point. I think there is some real dog genius there. They are going to switch off on who is the top dog a few times in the next year but if she was the only one I had kept, I wouldn't be sorry at this point. She comes in the house the most too. Kye- I'm not certain what to expect. I have some ideas but I might be totally wrong. The sire is going to have great effect on these pups and he is a particularly unique dog that is far above other collies I've seen. He's got a tw -
Sorry Bluecollar, if I would have had any idea of where this dog actually was/from I would not have. Great looking dog though. I sure hope I don't have the same luck in the tracking department with my lurchers. Their stag mother runs a hot track surprisingly well so I hope they will be tempered enough to stay with it. I'm relying a lot on the endurance of the boarder collie to make the difference. If mine look half as good as yours I'll be tickled. Thanks for sharing the whole story on your dog.

The one second from the right is the shortest coupled of the four at this point. They've got a lot of development and growing to do so we'll see how they end up. -

I still don't know which one I like the most. I know which one I get along with the best though. That certainly will make a difference in my final picks. Deer-gun season is over and it's time to be outside in the woods. It's ON!!! -

Here's a recent photo: I've just been taking them to as many different kinds of places as I can. They are getting to look like they are out of a stag now and have exceptional coats. They still have their milk teeth. -
All that is going on is that the pups ligaments are growing much faster than it's bones. Get it some ribcages. It's a perfect mix of calcium and meat for rickets. I've pulled around a dozen pups through rickets for myself and my friends over the years. Don't give it more food, give it less. Things will even out pretty quickly and your pup will be fine.
