I can't understand why people get rid of their animals just because a baby has come along ... It doesn't automatically mean that have to spend every fecking second in the house around the baby ... Infact its healthier to get out a few hours a day and relax away from nappies and teething ... And the same goes for your missus ... I have had four kids and never got rid of my dogs or ferrets .............

so how can blood hounds follow scent that's maybe a fortnight old for miles and miles? sometimes for days as in a few cases in the USA. i do believe there's a lot we don't understand about scent or the way a dog uses it senses just to throw one in on scent how deep can a search and rescue dog locate using scent ? I don't know how deep they can scent but they are searching for the odour of 1 human which is different than pinpointing a moving rabbit 3 or 4 foot underground ...........

Meaning the dog is picking up traces of footfall scent scent left on bushes etc and dependant on the conditions will depend how long these scents last ... In a hot and dry environment the scent will dicsipate far quicker than on a damp cold day .............

The reason she knew there was one in there is because the warren smelt of rabbits ...The reason she knew the hob had killed out in the field is because she could hear it mate .... The dog doesn't walk around over the warren smelling through the ground to locate the rabbit ... It does it through listening ........... what about terriers what try holes ,............they ignore most of them on big places and then always enter the one and find straight away........surely must be the same for lurchers? ( when there marking big warrens )I personally think its a combination of sound and smell I am

Yep a tap on the snout push your finger as deep as possible into their mouth if they to and bite are all good ways of curing biting ... And as has been said bacon is a no no for ferrets way to much salt for a little animal ...........

Totally agree Ken 100%, my point was more that some dogs have natural stamina or it's in the breeding and some don't. My dog was fit but his breeding doesn't give him the natural stamina of some other lurcher types Fascinating thread. Which breeds do you think 'breed in' the best stamina and does what they are crossed with risk breeding it out? AND, how old would you say a young dog can be built up into longer hours or more open/challenging running? Can you knacker a young dog running it too hard too fast? Collies and salukis are the main stamina dogs but both breeds have different types

not an answer to your question but mental stamina without physical stamina is a recipe for disaster But is it Paul? What about a ferreting dog that needs mental stamina to concentrate on a warren for extended periods of time but may not be required to use physical stamina as there may not be many bolters that aren't caught in the nets?thats concentration i would say mental stamina without physical stamina can take a dog past it limitsI would say concentration IS mental staminai would say an exceptional nose would be better than concentration when ferreting Then you would be very wrong my

If its breed specific stamina then you are limited in what you can achieve ... As we all know certain breeds have far more natural stamina than others and in that instance all you can do is the condition your dog to the best of your ability ...........

In my opinion no matter where you live or how many runs you get your dog should be at its physically best including stamina ... You wouldn't train a boxer to hit only half has hard as he could just because he isn't getting a title fight ... I enjoy conditioning my dogs and watching them grow physically mentally and have the capability to undertake any task asked of them at any time ... If you haven't got your dog as fit as it could possibly be you are doing yourself and the dog a disservice ... Keep on pushing the boundaries see where you can take the dog ... 1 meter by 6 foot is far to small you need to double that for a lurcher ..........

A working collie is hunting ... In its brain it is herding the sheep towards its master or alpha male as wild dogs would do in the wild so harnessing that and altering it your needs has got to be better than using a pet show type that has never been out in the field using its instincts .... You are correct in the fact that there are manic collies out there and you should give them the biggest swerve possible ...
