What age to take dog out on lamp for 1st time?
Hannah4181 replied to Hollie's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Hi Hollie, Spider was only 6 months when i took him out with fireman etc on the lamp, i didn't run him though just let him watch. He hasn't been out again at night as i am concentrating on getting his confidence up, retrieve and recall spot on and to actually think about what he's doing . . . . . . this is all progressing nicely out with the ferrets. Hoping to get him out on the lamp next week for a couple of easy runs. I'm by no means an expert on lamping, infact a complete novice but i think as you've said, i'd only give Kylo a couple of easy runs to let him get the idea and build hi -

I completely agree, it was a good job my lurcher is so docile . . . . . if i'd had my JRT or my sisters border it would have been a different story! -

To be honest i was laughing too much at spiders face with this spitting little thing in his mouth, to attempt anything else . . .. . . . so so funny, gutted i didn't have my camera! I think this 1 may have been a chihuahua crossed with something else, maybe a miniature pinsher, as it was leggier than most i've seen. My friend has a couple of chihuahua's and they are great little dogs, not my cup of tea, but as you've said, with a correct upbringing they don't need to be nasty and aggressive. -
chicken wings or no chicken wings
Hannah4181 replied to punter's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
I thing carcasses are much better for a pup with an owner worried about the choking hazard. Carcasses are much softer bone and as mentioned above, do require the dog to gnaw and shear pieces off, as opposed to an over zealous pup gulping down a whole wing, which could terrify an owner new to raw feeding! -

Although i couldn't stop laughing when it was hanging out either side of spiders mouth!!! . . . . . . . .. It is infuriating that someone has that little control, i work hard with my dogs to make them sociable, controlled and well mannered, unfortunatly there was no helping my JRT, because of that he just doesn't go out to public places, he stays on the farm and has more than enough land to do as he pleases. The whole point of going there today was to socialise the dalmation pup, so she to will grow up well mannered and under control . . . . bad experiences like today can scare a pup fo -
I took my sisters 11 week old dalmation puppy and spider my 1 year old beddyXwhippet down to the local water meadows today. The meadows consist of about 500acres of open pasture with the river running through the middle, very pretty and extremely popular with dog walkers. I use it mainly to socialise puppies, as it is always full of dogs and a great experience for pups. So we'd been there about an hour, and had met about 30/40 different dogs. . . . . . my lurcher had met 2 greyhounds which wore him out, and the dalmation pup was starting to get really confident with the variety of dogs

Water, junk food, and a freshly changed bed! . . . . . . . . . and if i'm really struggling . . . . . . . . . my mum!

The mouth heals so quickly, i know lots of dogs that have broken K9's from playing with stones, boomer balls and large beef bones. As long as there is no sign of infection or discomfort then leave her be, dogs adjust extremely well to things like this and will probably never have a problem with it.

chicken wings or no chicken wings
Hannah4181 replied to punter's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
My pup's always start on raw food at about 8 weeks, i think the diet your feeding now sounds very good. Adding the chicken can only be a good thing, start the pup on carcasses as the bones are softer, obviously watch it when you 1st feed them. I can honestly say none of mine have ever choked or struggled with raw bone as pups. Once it's confident with the carcasses then try wings as well, and even raw minces (chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, tripe, rabbit) in with the complete will help her to eat more. I always give pups at least 1 kibble meal a day when they are young as it means you are co -
The house training thing is easy to crack with a bit of patience! General rule of thumb is after feeding, drinking, playing, sleeping, roughly every 15 mins, take the pup outside and once he goes to the toilet . . . . . . lots and lots of praise and some treats. If you can do this, it will take no longer than a week to get them house trained. Does the puppy have lots of toys/ things to chew? Best suggestion would be to move everything that is dangerous, small kids toys, chemicals, house plants. Puppies don't think ahead, if you give them enough toys and chews they will use the 1st thing t

Lovely pups! I would suggest doing short, fun training sessions with them both seperately, use some good smelly treats, cooked chicken, liver or cheese. It's hard enough getting a 9 week old pup to concentrate on it's own, let alone when it has a playmate to wrestle with! Good luck.

This is spider my beddi Whippet, he'll be 1 tomorrow. I'm really pleased with how he's turning out, been out ferreting half a dozen times and nailed nearly everything that bolted, retrieves live to hand and is exceptionally easy in all ways, totally relaxed, never on a lead, voice sensitive and very biddable. I simply couldn't ask for more.

Long story but . . . . . . I was working for Born Free in Kent and was offered the chance to fly out to india with some tigers which were being taken over their to be released, at around the same time i met a guy who was South African and had contacts with Big Cat projects in Africa, i initially paid to go out for 2 months and help on the reserve. . . . . . . .. . . . a month in, i fell in love with a ranger and when he dropped a 8week old lion cub off with me 1 morning and asked me to look after it, i cancelled my flight and stayed a year! Unbelievable experience, some of the things i d

Sounds like a dream job! But if it was teaching the big cats the essentials to survive in the wild its perfectly acceptable, i just doubt that fish will ever be released into the wild, and its not realy a skill thats needs teaching, dragging things down from the surface to eat Best time of my life! Thats my outlook on it too, as i said although i never got pleasure from watching the animal die, i did get pleasure from watching an animal i'd reared and rehabilitated, turn from a "pet lion" to a wild lion. A very proud day that was, and immensley sad because i knew i'd have to say

I don't agree with that at all . . . . . . . However when i was working with big cats in Africa, we did have to on occasions feed the lions a live mammal to teach them to hunt before being released into the wild. I never enjoyed it as such, but somehow could justify it by knowing that without learning these skills, the lions would never have been released to freedom. Maybe that makes me a hypocrite? The captive big cats i worked with, which would never be released, were NEVER fed live food as there was no need to enhance their hunt/kill drive.

ok i see it's clear you've not moved past this and your anger for me is raging further still . . . . . . . might i suggest speaking to your head of year or a member of student services at your school, they will have information for you on dealing with anger issues, and ways of overcoming this little problem you have. :realmad: Best of luck to you. And remember a problem shared is a problem halved.

Frontline spray, since i've been using it for the last 5 years or so, i've never once found any trace of fleas on either the dogs or the cats. Brilliant stuff.

As mentioned above, all dogs need totally different amounts and types of food. From what you've said it sounds like you have brought the BARF frozen blocks?? IMO these meals are pumped full of water and generally all the shit that doesn't go into the food chain. That said now you have them i would use them up alongside a decent amount of raw bone. Most good butchers will sell/give you bone, chicken carcasses, turkey necks, lamb breast, beef rib, chicken wings, lamb necks, feed all these whole and raw. As you have said the dog is gulping food to stop the pup from eating it, if feeding t
