how did you make a living out of your hobby ?
ChrisJones replied to ferret boy charlie's topic in General Talk
Yeah but I meant more about how you can use lots of different things in your strategy. Learn how you can use it on the job. You'll be amazed how many pro-pesties can't do that. -

Gassing is only worth learning about if you're looking at going into fumigation. Even if you do you'll be taught by better sources than the Internet. It's really f*****g dangerous and in most cases impractical. It has it's niches but they're very specialised. Baiting, on the other hand, is something that you will do alot of. Learn about what you need to control rodents. What works, what doesn't. What's legal, what's not and where's legal and where isn't. Learn what Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is. -

That's the spirit! This is my career. I took a big salary drop to get into it. I never regretted it. Learn everything you can. The environment is always changing. Both the natural environment and legal/bureaucratic environment. It shifts all the time and today's legal methods are tomorrow's no no's. You need to adapt to it. If you can do that then there is no reason why you can't succeed. -

Definitely! If you're serious about your craft, and are prepared to take the journey of near perfection, then you're one of the few. Most don't have the time nor the inclination to do it so seeing some of the posts about professional rabbiting 24/7 I can't help but feel as though it's Dreamland. I started off as a sportsman. Ferreting, airgunning etc. I'd even considered paying for permission, in my youth. I was alright at it but I really wanted to work in the industry. So I got a job with a firm and reality set in. Rats and mice, in the winter, wasps and ants in the summer. After a fe -
That's how political lobbying works. Here is some cash. It's yours if you consider this opinion... I do believe that the League Of Approved Cock Suckers had the welfare of the fox at heart. They genuinely believed that they were helping to stop/prevent what they perceived as cruelty. The mistake they made was relying on the British politicians. Sure they gave their money, they bought their votes, but I'll guarantee that the League feel as though they've been fisted as the shambolic ban is neither use not ornament. They haven't got the man power to police it... the police haven't go

I think we both know that you're one of the few. The fact that you know your craft inside and out puts you head and shoulders above your competitors. But could you do the same job in London? Or Birmingham? Manchester? Plenty of calls for cockroaches and bedbugs, but moles and rabbits? I accept you did it, and did it well, but you're in the minority of people that have been able to do it that way. It's a nice ambition but the reality is one of driving a Transit Connect and arguing with salesmen. Unless you're good. Depends how you look at it, Stubs. You're still hunting but the quar -
This thread is probably more activity than the League Of Approved Cock Suckers have had since the "ban" came in. They're losing support. Their big campaign to ban hunting was a success, as far as the layman is concerned, and now that Joe Public sees it as mission accomplished they see the league as defunct and have stopped sending them money. Basically we continue as normal and only your die hard hippy gives a f**k anymore. Replying to these generic emails is a waste of time. You just end up with your email being splashed all over their sites in a bid to wind up other hippies into

Linking to YouTube hunting clips isn't the issue. It's dumb clips of people doing stupid things in the name of hunting. I can see why people are linking to them. Some of this stuff is outrageous and it's being done for universal condemnation. The problem now is that by simply linking to these videos, the power of The Hunting Life in the Internet search engine rankings, is drawing a lot of attention to these things. I'm not asking people to stop linking to videos. Just the ones that make hunting look really, really, really, really, bad. If people really need to share these l

... Resist the urge to link to these stupid f*****g YouTube videos where so called hunters are doing irreparable harm to us. These videos are listed on this site, arguably one of the most popular hunting sites around. These links then get viewed by everyone that can see the Hunting Video Clips section. This extra traffic then pushes these links up the Google/Yahoo ranking systems. These links become more popular and it attracts more people to watching links of inhumane stupidity. This increased activity pushes the videos further up the ranking system, like it did with .

I disagree it's a boring job. It's poorly paid but the local authorities can be partly thanked for that as they subsidise a lot of the rodent control work, it's either free or for very small fees. Likewise the commission driven salesman tends to devalue your work in the interests of his sales targets. Rarely have I seen a salesman actually price a job for what time is involved in solving the customers problem, they want the job because they'll get a percentage of the fee and will usually try to undercut the next man. Agreed though. You won't be getting paid to shoot, ferret, and course all -
That's effectively what they're doing. It's not like they're making fat salaries, for selling shit and telling lies, they risk their lives day in day out for hell of it. CA could take a leaf from that book.

Done. The RNLI are a charity staffed by many unpaid volunteers. Ofcom wants to bring 'market forces' to the maritime and aviation communications. This means that the RNLI will be expected to fork out two hundred and fifty grand, a year, to use marine radio frequencies. They currently pay around forty thousand pounds. This is f*****g ridiculous and typical of the Labour party. Let's tax search and rescue to see if they can still provide the service after we've squeezed them dry.

Judging by the Yuletide PM's, and some of the questions asked on the forums, the many of you have noticed the new airgun forums we have. We have a section for frequently asked questions (FAQ's) We also have a section for gear reviews. (Rifle reviews, gear set up etc,) It's at the very top of the forum in a sub section. If you think back to the days when we had numerous sticky posts, at the top of the section, covering things like the law and Grim's permission letters, they're all in THIS SECTION HERE Merry Christmas! COCK OF THE NORTH ---- RAT CONTEST
ChrisJones replied to john hubery's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Sounds fair. This way it can be open to members from all over the world, if they want to enter... -
IanB has kindly given us two new forums to play in. This one is for all those sticky posts that used to be at the top of the main forum. The other is for any kit reviews you fancy doing, i.e rifle set ups, scopes etc. Hopefully it'll make things a little tidier.

You never know... maybe we'll see some legislation about cats, in the future. From a public health point cat faeces isn't any better than dog.

I'd recommend that everyone start with open sights. That is if you're serious about marksmanship. Yes it limits your range but forces you to consider your fieldcraft. I've been shooting for over 20 years and I couldn't afford a scope for the first 10 of them! Too many people want big power and high magnification scopes. It does take the skill out of it but I guess it's what you want from the airgun world. Some people need to control pests and haven't got all the time in the world to learn their field craft. They need instant results. Hounds for grounds I guess...

I don't care where you're from. That's a f*****g good shot kiwi.
-
Agreed. We don't have to do this but it's the right step forward, IMHO. It makes everyone involved at little easier when we know how they're going to react.
-
Nothing wrong with it. If you want to learn it the old fashioned way, go for it. Personally I haven't got the time or the inclination. Lansky's never let me down, holds a great edge, and I'm cutting things instead or cursing at it. Each to their own I guess.
-
Why? Why do it?
-
I'm glad we sorted that out because I was thinking he meant part exchange.

Lansky. Comes with instructions and some kits have a free knife for you to practice on.
