So if greyhounds are the manufactured breed that is fastest over a short circuit - bred specifically to win races. Then add saluki to say sod that and jump off the track and kill the eveready bunny ....
Salukis are not natural retrievers but if they bond and are part of a pack ( not kept out in a kennel/shed) then they will try their hearts out. There is also a natural instinct - or so I have found - to hold the prey and wait.
Saluki lurchers have had many generations of being bred for a totally alien landscape so you can't blame them for being confused!
I still reckon mitochondrial dna plays a large part.

With the horses I would use the 80/20 dam/sire
BUT what about the fact that the dam spends 10 weeks influencing the pups - could argue that the grey temperament is better.

Personally I have not seen them in the coo environment but the three imports are so very different that breeding does count. Mitochondrial dna stronger though.
