  1. Feel free to correct me those who know about these things, but I read on my new sealed lead acid battery instructions not to that fully drain the battery or this will render the warranty useless. Is this because it causes damage to the plates when requiring a full charge? I'm not sure, and believe me I really ought to be, but I also thought that draining it and giving it a full charge would give it a 'full memory'. Is this just for the solid chemical rechargeable type? Dave edited to say I was posting at same time as oldskool.
  2. Swap for a pair of size 9 slippers with so much fur inside that even your toes can't fit into them and a house coat that would have kept Scott alive at the South Pole. Dave
  3. i thought that the pups would be retarded and blinded like that!!! It may cause problems for future generations of pups and they mightent live long its sick if you ask me!! i dident ask you you asked me ya right so have fun having sex with your sister!! I wouldn't want to breed as close but I also wouldn't resort to churlish, personal attacks on someone. Keep at it David, I hear people speak highly of you, know you are well respected and don't produce shite. Dave
  4. will you part exchange for a box of roses. ive eaten all the nice ones Been looking for a decent half of tin of roses for some time now. I have collected all the pyros from tomorrows xmas crackers. Should make an impressive explosion. PM me if you're interested in a deal. Dave
  5. Hi. I carry a small LED torch on my belt, which I use for any climbing around etc - Tesco have some very, very good black, metal cased LED torches on sale from about £10 upwards. I wish you well with your new battery. Like you I am no longer in the first flush of youth (I started my lamping career in the mid-1970's) with eyesight that isn't quite what it once was and a touch of arthritis as well, so the weight issue matters to me in a way that it didn't twenty years ago and I just can't be arsed to go lamping for three or four hours, I go for an hour or two and that's enough for me these day
  6. LOL. All of the above. My present Deben 14ah came as two 7.2's strapped together. It weighs over 10 lbs already. The new one weighs 13 lbs. I have it in a small rucksack and walk for probably 3 or 4 hours in any one session. The deben is about 1 year old and never really held its charge. I am not getting any younger and am now blind as a bat so I do use it quite a lot for negotiating fences and hedges. Maybe the cluelite (sp?) with the secondary lamp would be the ideal solution for me but santa's already been and I'll have to wait. Dave
  7. Went to Maplin's. F'all there in way of jumper starters. The shop was nearly empty, aprt from screws and connectors do they know something we don't? I tried a local burglar alarm installer and he started baffling me with techno. He was a decent guy though and was talking about 2 differing types of battery. Slow discharge and fast discharge, the latter being for high fast energy drain like a starter motor for a car or a.....lure machine. Armed with my smug new found knowledge I googled this company Here and bought a 12V 22ah sealed battery. He said it would drive a golf trolley (
  8. I think it might be because most of us like to tinker. We see a mates dog doing a certain thing and would like to put that in our next dog with some of the better attributes from our old dog. The whippet is a fantastic rabbiter amongst other things with a huge heart and desperate to please. Of course it has its limitations (everything does) and providing you learn and know what they are, you will never be let down or disappointed. A small lurcher might be bred specifically to do something better than a purebred whippet. It might do that oneor two things better, but as a general a
  9. at the moment maplin have car jump starters for 19.99 that contain a 12 volt 17 amp battery, just take the battery out out of the said contraption. used in conjunction with a 6 amp charger you will have hours of nocturnal fun.. Frig, it just gets better. I'm heading up to maplins as soon as i finish typing! Dave
  10. Thanks a million SS, just the info I wanted. I'm now on the case as I didn't want to miss out on any xmas bunnies over the closedown. Dave
  11. Great account and great sportsmanship. It really shows that there is still friendship and true sporting comraderie out there. Well done to both. Dave
  12. Not sure if this is in the right section but it goes in hand with lamping my whippets so here goes. I'm pissed off with my battery going dead after about an hour's lamping. I don't want to spend more good money on another couple of deben batteries taped together. I read a post earlier about someone using a motorbike battery and looked some up. I can get a new 12V, 20ah sealed bike battery on ebay for under £50. At the same time I'll probably splash out on the charger/conditioner. It weighs 6kgs which is only about 1kg heavier than my current deben. Has anyone else used a bike
  13. Kennel fully insulated and sheeted inside. Interior divided into 3 separate boxes. cost £500. Dog run - galvanised panels 6' by 25 ' can be divided into 3 with separate gates. Cost £300 Dave
  14. I live quite far north, on the antrim coast and run two whippets. I am able to say that one shivers but sticks to his task and one doesn't bat an eylid in extreme conditions. i have had them out in snow, sleet, wind howling gales and still they would keep me out longer than I would want. I have heard of some whippets being shivering little b*****ds, and no doubt some are. But my dogs are quite hardy and would outstay some of the shivering little human b*****ds who have called them this. Dave
  15. Agree with the other statements. Your dog is a sighthound and obviously useless with impaired vision. My whippet hits cover and hedges like it isn't there and he has punctured his eye before. he had to be sedated and operated on although i was lucky that it was at the edge of the white and although he has scarring it had no adverse affect on his vision. Yours sounds nasty though and i wouldn't hesitate any longer. It might not be that bad but let a closer examination confirm that. Dave
  16. Just back. A rubbish evening. No wind, arse deep in mud and lamp packed in after an hour. Only saw 2 fence sitters on new permission that the farmer told me was infested. Dog wasn't that bothered tonight for some reason, normally he's pulling me round the first couple of fields until he settles down. dave
  17. A good honest account of a typical night out. I have many a night like that. It never fazes me and I never let the dogs feel any disappointment. You're right, they are not machines and cannot be at a peak for ever. They always try for me and don't miss on purpose so when things are not going to plan I sometimes stop slipping and do a wee bit of training and let them chill with a lamped walk. Dave
  18. deben cluelight its about a year old So much for me offering advice. A brilliant blowy night here and my frigin lamp lasted 10 mins and two slips. The wee ferrule inside the connector fell out when my boy put it on charge for me last he didn't notice it not charging. i was pretty pissed when it faded. Dave
  19. I did one when I was in the Phillipines and when i was in the Royal Navy. No difference apart from the navvy's hands and adams apple when your pissed and he/she is experienced. :secret:
  20. How old is it mate and do you always store it in the charged condition. The batteries are a pain in the ass and I've also walked back across the first couple of fields in the darkness. I'm getting about and hour from mine but that's still crap. Dave
  21. Good one Frank, I've saved that for myself for the future. dave
  22. Hi mate. I've gone the other way for a pup. You can't take a dog as a foot passenger on the ferry and only a couple of airlines will transport dogs and only in the summer. I've always had to take my car over, which adds about 200 quid + petrol to the cost. Some people transport their dogs as frieght and a lot of showdog people make their way over regularly. I don't know any or I might be able to help you. Dave
  23. I bought a lurcher bull x and it is mint dose all I ask on or off the lamp its a bit dosey sometimes when it comes to retreaving but on the whole its a good dog. Granted bringing on your own dog is the best way forward but for the inexperienced hunter may be this is the only way to understand a dog and its hunting skills I now have a year old pup and finding it a little frustraighting trying to get her to work for me but slowly but surely am sure it will work out. Giving them an experienced dog does not teach them patience, the most important factor in working a dog. I think they are b
  24. An excellent post. I agree 100% with everything said here. It's like the advert, 'free to good home'. What exactly does that mean? How the hell does the person know it's good home? It just gives a fast way of getting rid and frees the owner up of any guilty conscience . If I couldn't keep my dogs (I accept that it can happen) I would search all avenues to get them rehomed. If it wasn't going to be a working home with someone experienced and a true dog lover I would look for a family pet home. I would hate to think of some inexperienced a/hole treating them like s-- t and feeding th
