  1. you have an eye for a good picture kay, credit where it's due. I used to prefer black and white myself when i dabbled briefly. B
  2. lIght sussex are a pretty dual purpose breed, but black rocks are the best LONG TERM layers, for a fare few seasons. I have 10 of them now, and they are starting to moult as well, but i still get 10 eggs a day from them, and have almost that many all through the winter to be honest. Thats about the amount you'd want for your area i would say, a bag of layers pellets last about 10 days give or take, if its cold wearther, a bit less. Lots of hybrid layers out there, and prettyer hens, but a good laying, hardy, free ranging hen, you wont beat the black rock in my opinion, and i have had warre
  3. i think that an umbilical hernia is more of an issue with a bitch. Not for any working reason or health issue, but say in a number of years, when said bitch has seasons of good honest consistent graft under her belt / collar, and you want to take a litter from her. If there is still an, even small, hernia present, and your bitch gets a bellyfull of pups, her guts will be like a party balloon fit to burst by the time her whelping date gets near, any weakness in that abdomen such as a hernia, regardless of size, would be under severe pressure, and should it not have healed itself or been rep
  4. You were a mod JD, how come you never did it then ???? But I agree, this section can and is a wealth of information from experienced trappers, to the inexperienced.......like me.
  5. looks pretty good to me, but you might find that wall mounts may possibly sell better, cut that wood in half and you'll sell it quicker perhaps, but a nice job all the same.
  6. may get the use of a tractor mounted one next season to get down amongst it a bit deeper.
  7. have the spray mate, big breath in as he sprays, then puts like a gumshield in so you dont bite the cable lol. take a bottle of coke with you for after, takes the taste of that spray away, sort of a vanilla taste if i remember. once its passed the back of your throat its ok. You'll be fine mate, its not as bad as all that, just a bit different.
  8. i know i'm a day late, but happy birthday to the pair of you, best wishes.
  9. i have a 5hp rotovator on loan , when would you plant your first earlies and put your runner beans in to trays ?
  10. What machine do you use to get that sort of tilth mate?? i can see some sort of track there. I managed to turn mine over again yesterday, its a fresh patch ( was lawn) so its been turned twice now, and mucked, will turn it another couple of times perhaps in the hard weather before i start to rake it down to where i want it, last years veg patch has been more than doubled, got a plan, adaptable of course, but going to give it a more organised effort this time around.
  11. f**k thats a bad job pat, very sorry to hear it mate, chin up fella. B
  12. Christ ian, you ought to write a book yourself after that paragraph................couldnt be any worse than Darcy's anyway , in fact, probably better . Put me down for a copy if you do publish. Regards
  13. Darbo, i have kept white leghorns, cream legbars, cuckoo marans, light sussex, warrens, all sorts, they all have theyre own qualities, i like the pure white colour of the leghorn eggs, the chocolate dark colour of the marans, the pretty sussex, the layning amount of the warrens etc, but this is the first time i have ever tried black rocks myself, always heard good things about them, but i must say, they beat all the others into a top hat, an egg a day per bird almost, hardly slowed up during the winter, quality of shell is second to none, and apparently will stay so for many years, nice size e
  14. nice light sussex. You dont see the ones where the black cape goes right around the neck these days, some go most of the way, but rarely do you see some who go all the way around nowadays. i like light sussex myself, but they dont compare as layers to the black rock imo, but a very pretty hen all the same.

  21. I call it "Rough as guts carpentry", because thats what it is basically, but he's clever at it, give him credit. Did anyone else ever see the one where he made a full size glasshouse out of a pile of old glass doors ??? out in france??, may not be the prettyest thing ever made, but it was extremely fit for purpose in all fairness. New yankee workshop with Norm, now THATS what you call a genuine, 100% bonafide f****n tradesman with a capitol "F"
