That's what I'm hoping will happen for me. Getting back to excuses the weather forecast here looks terrible for the next week lol

I've travelled all over Britain doing other hunting but I don't know anyone else that hunts with hawks. A lot of the land I worked lurchers on I can't go on because the keepers are worried about a hawk killing grouse or even the pheasants. There's even issues with the big woodland areas up here now because red squirrels are in them. I'm confident that I'll get to go on more land next season and there's a few places I just haven't found the time to hunt on yet but it will happen. I'm lucky I have mates that have invited me onto their permission after checking it out with the keeper and farmers

Good to see you back out after illness.

If I take her to somewhere that has a few rabbits etc running around then I'm confident she will do ok. As you know the dales aren't what they were a few years back. We are having to use ferrets to provide rabbits for the hawk, something which I would never have had to contemplate just three years ago. Until the rabbits come back in numbers all I can do is try and get what we can. "Round the doors" is far worse though and very hit and miss, with so many lurchermen and lads with air rifles going after the same few bunnies it's hard work. In saying all of that I've made too many excuses this s

Cheers mate, I'm just glad we are finally getting some hunting done. With the lowest rabbit numbers in living memory and the windiest, wettest season on record everything she gets to fly at is a bonus. I'm still learning and so is my hawk, things should only get better with time.

Yesterday was a washout, I knew it was going to rain a lot but still went out. She got to catch one rabbit but the rain started coming down so heavy that it wasn't worth trying to continue. Once home I kept checking the weather to see if there was a chance of flying her but the rain didn't eased off. This morning looked like it was going to rain again but we managed to get a bit done. The hawk got wet but is now dried off and back in her aviary. She caught four and missed a few more so it was a good couple of hours. We set off back home just before the heavier rain started. I'm glad I've

I'll be in touch then mate. Heavy rain stopped us doing much today but she got to catch a rabbit.

Cheers Dave, Yeah it's been a frustrating season with the weather but when I get a good day it's all worthwhile. Hopefully we can fly her over your Vizsla someday.

I think it's the best type of land for any type of hunting, foxhounds, beagling, rabbiting with lurchers, shooting etc. The flights are longer and on the places I'm getting to hunt over the very low number of rabbits seem only to be living on the steep bank sides which makes for dramatic catches as they roll and plummet to the lower levels. Due to the gradient if the hawk misses and the rabbit spins around before running back up hill it's usually going to escape but again as the hawk tries to get back on terms with it the action is good. There aren't many rabbits up there but last season we

Cheers, things are starting to go right for a change.

We were back out this morning with the ferret. Most sets are empty and what is being used is positioned in bad spots.Anyway she caught a mixied rabbit which I didn't keep followed by another three good strong bunnies. She had caught another after a good long flight but it fought free so escaped. Together with half a dozen misses it was a nice morning out.

Although the Met office said it wouldn't be windy this morning the gusts were trying their best to remove my hawk of the glove. When she did chase something she had no chance and was then blown across the fell. I walked over a big tract of land and saw very little, the dog was covering the ground well and although he could miss some things it's clear that this once superb rabbiting dale is now almost devoid of rabbits. I'd driven miles to get here so we went into a sheltered valley. It's very steep with a rocky bank going into a river. A rabbit bolted from the reeds, the hawk struggled again

If you play with feathers you'll get your arse tickled.

Last Sunday my hawk had caught two rabbits when the ferret had another bottled up four foot down. The lad that was doing the ferreting for me only had a little shovel with him and it was rocky ground. At two foot it was clear we would need better digging gear or a long wait. Thankfully the ferret showed and just in time as the wind and sleet was minutes away. The little shovels always seem a good idea especially in the dales areas where sets aren't usually too deep but its Sod's law it all goes wrong when you don't have the right tools. Next time I'm putting my own digging gear in the motor,

Not on here but there's a load of info on the Internet.

The bitch on the right is my old Gwp lurcher. I did a fair bit with her but now she just wanders along. I still take her ratting sometimes and the odd bit of lamping but nothing much these days. She broke her neck at a year old and had a few more nasty injuries after that and she's a bit stiff now and probably arthritic but that's to be expected. The dog on the left is a big thing but very agile for his size, people have been left amazed at the way he can catch rats at awkward angles. He almost turns himself inside out lol. I'm no expert though but yeah the bitches are smaller. Personall

Yeah the first time I took her out with the pointer she flew away across the field, I had to put him back in the car whilst you tracked her down. She has been a problem at times and I've had to learn and adapt along the way but then the work gets rewarded and it's all worthwhile.

I hope so, once this wind goes i might get some ferreting done with the hawk.
