I've had a pretty terrible season so far for several reasons. It's not over yet though.

It's been hard to get out over the last couple of weeks with the wind and rain and when we did it's been a series of near misses. She managed to get a moorhen yesterday and a rabbit today. My hawk will now work with a dog she knows but if two are out together she seems to stay back a bit. Just another thing I'm working on.

Off course they should I was just saying that golden valley won't pay out for loss if the bird wasn't kitted out with telemetry. Personally I wouldn't risk flying a Bop without telemetry AND insurance .
-
50% if fitted with telemetry.

Golden valley are known to pay out so Golden valley are known to pay out, an Internet search will show that I guarantee it. Not all injuries are life threatening but would be expensive to fix. I have treat dogs with serious injuries but wouldn't know where to start with a hawk. One visit to a vet will make the low cost of insurance worthwhile and they pay out on death so even with keen triers that get killed you get money back to go and get another one. Even dogs can come back from serious and costly injury. It's not always a PTS situation. I have never insured a dog but there were times

Hawks are fairly inexpensive to buy, cheaper than well bred coursing or gun dogs with a better chance of making the grade I might add. It appears hawks have a far lower cull rate than working dogs. I insured mine as i like to know that if she gets injured money won't be an issue and I can take her to a specialist vet.

Yeah I'm with golden valley........its extremely cheap.

I couldn't get out in the week due to work and Saturday was a series of misses, the hawk just couldn't seem to get on terms with stuff in the wind. She did have a long flight on a pheasant and I lost sight of her, after a few minutes I started tracking with the telemetry but she found me again. Yesterday we went up the dales but the wind was ridiculous, we found a bankside sheltered slightly but it was clear that she was struggling and missed the three rabbits that were bolted. After that we headed back to the car as she was being blown off the glove and it had started to rain. We then took

Sorry to hear that. Accidents happen,a couple of years back I somehow hadn't fastened a kennel door and my pointer killed my old terrier. I swear this is the only time I haven't closed a pen door in over twenty years of kenneling dogs. I didn't realize it had happened at first when I went past the yard but when I didn't see the terrier I had a horrible feeling and found his smashed up body in the pointers box. I had to go into the house to calm down because I wanted to kill the other dog. Things like this can come from a moments carelessness. Up to that point I believed such a thing would nev

I thought the same, then spent the next day reading every post and watching every YouTube clip.

Thanks mate , I'll try that.
-
It's something I'll try again when the moon phase is right. Lamping might come in handy if I haven't been able to get her out enough in the daytime.
-
I figured it might take time, these rabbits weren't squatters but she was still in with a good chance.i'll keep trying .

I tried her out lamping this week on a few rabbits but she was striking down just behind them. I don't know if she was losing sight of them at the last minute as she went in.They all ran straight ahead so the light might have been blotted out.I think it would be easier if someone else did the lamping and I just slipped the hawk. Good fun anyway.

My hawk has had a week of near misses, the wind was blowing strongly today so I cancelled the hunting I had planned and put a new roof on my aviary and kennel block. I did go out for an hour before dark and the wind had me worried at times but she battled against it to stay with us. After a while the gusts were just too strong so I went into a small wooded area and she jumped onto a mixied rabbit. No big deal but at least she got to feed up on a warm kill after a week of crashing through bramble and cover for no reward.

I haven't seen cast hunting so I don't know what it's like , I know I've spent more time on here than hunting this season so I need to sort myself out.

Good post and pics. Keep em coming

It's all we can do, i expected more kills as well. For me its about getting onto the right land which should start happening soon. Round the doors just isn't cutting it, yes I'm getting the odd kill but it hasn't been regular enough and besides I don't like hunting in thick cover and hedgerows. Except for squirrels in woods I'm only ever happy if I'm out walking on moor or fells. So I need to make more of an effort to gain access onto those areas.
-
It's much the same as with lurchers then.

I don't know about gg (good game) it's not something I ever hope to see again, one talon through the head or crop and it could be go (game over)

That's a shame mate. I'm sure there's loads of lads that are flying two or more hawks together without incident year after year. Mine was maybe just unlucky, i don't think the other hawk was trying to do her real harm but is a lot bigger than my little female.
-
Don't get me wrong I didn't ask about cast flying because I want to kill more stuff or anything like that I was just interested. The only reason I can see for flying a cast is to catch more quarry but I wondered if there were other reasons to do so. Mine did fly with another hawk a few weeks back and was attacked, this weekend was the first time since then that she flew properly. I think that although there was no damage that I could see she must have been sore and bruised for some time. She still has a wound over her left eye that I've been treating. There was also some fraying done to wing

I've had my allotment sheds broke into more times this year than the previous ten. Tools and anything metal has been stolen, I'm thinking now that it's just not worth the effort. It's soul destroying to go out to feed your hens before going to work to see shed doors hanging off and gates smashed in. Rows of vegetables were stolen whilst I was at work, the general theory is by Poles who work in the industrial estates. The Police don't seem to think that the theft of food is a big deal and the council say its up to the allotment holder to secure his garden. There doesn't seem much point in

Out of interest when flying a cast by how much does the success rate go up ?? I'm thinking that by doubling up a hawk( dogs are the same) it helps put more stuff in the bag. With the amount of missed flights I've had this season just on squirrel alone I think a cast would make it much harder for them to escape.

That's a shame mate. Better luck next time.
