  1. I agree with the jay post, very pretty and do far less damage than a magpie. Although we have 5 nesting pairs here (jays) so am happy to take the odd one for fly tying purposes. Magpies should be terminated with extreme prejudice.
  2. Just came back to this section of the forum from a long absence and decided to read through some of the posts. Sportingshooter you are a gent, it is really nice to see someone being so helpful and courteous, a long way from some of the other sections of this forum. Well done, I hope a lot of other people have learned from your postings even if they don't say anything. All the best H
  3. Very helpful thanks Rolfe. You learn something new everyday. At least I try to... I might make a couple up, the cages I have at the moment I made for squirrels and rats, so I need to make some rather larger. The only place we have a rabbit problem is in and around the orchard, but still no great numbers. Cheers again. H
  4. Rolfe. Never having trapped rabbits that way, do you prebait? Place the trap on a run? How does it work exactly? H
  5. LOL. Rolfe, do you use the run through cages also? You know the ones which are open both ends? Or are they all single door affairs? H
  6. This is a contentious subject I know. How about someone pins a message at the top of this board telling newbies where they might buy good quality snares from. It might be a little unfair to advertise, but we know there are several people on here who sell good quality snares, so if all names where posted this would make it fairer. Woodga, Geordie, Snareman, and whoever else sells GOOD quality snares. This might save a lot of frustration from those of us who read time and again 'where can I get some good snares from?' Either that, or perhaps those who do sell them can put a l
  7. A quick scout around today finds some old evidence but nothing over the past two days except for a new bankside hole under a willow. The very edge of the pond An old feeding station A poo pic A good print in poor light A pretty pic... Going to get up early and see if we can't snap one before the world and his dog get up. H
  8. I live in a small town down south. On the edge of town is a heath with a pond, it has no mink - yet... I have been asked by the committee I am on to provide evidence of Watervole activity on the pond as they are becoming so much rarer. I have found tracks, latrines and feeding stations and have even seen them diving under the water on approach. My question is...how to distinguish between the tracks of watervoles and brown rats. Both can be similar in size, both resemble the human hand, both inhabit bankside holes. The latrines were scattered with green droppings indicative of the
  9. Ahh the famous Jackies you were telling me about Snatchratter! But who is the thin fella in the pics?
  10. The higher the thinner. 16 guage is thinner than 12 guage. H
  11. John. Is it possible to keep the smaller one for a call bird and also as a regular pet? When not in use as a call bird it could be kept in an aviary? I'm not too sure how long they last as call birds even with sufficient food and water. H
  12. Well after some very frantic (and amazingly clever) searching on the net I discovered a detailed piccy of the one I was looking for. It is an old Goshawk trap, still used abroad. Quite clever mechanics but not too difficult to reproduce I hope. H
  13. Do you fancy putting up a pic of your clap trap Dogs? Especially the trigger mechanism? I am after making one and can't figure out the release. Cheers H
  14. Illegal. Trust me I know... H
  15. Sorted, starting off with four cubbys from Alan. Cheers once again Glen. H
  16. Thanks Snareman. will give him a call tomorrow. H
  17. They all look really good, but I need a close up please!! I would like to attach mine to a tree in a cubby for squirrels, hense the reason for clips in tunnels, I like your grip stands john, and rolfes cubby looks the biz too, but any one any ideas how to attach a BG in a cubby upside down? Cheers all H
  18. Click on my signature and ask on there. H
  19. One or two things spring to mind. The treadle seem quite far back, can the rabbits get at the bait over the top of the treadle? Can you move it forward by 3 inches? How fine a setting are you using? Does the trap spring when the treadle is depressed? Is the wire that connects the treadle to the door too long? Of course the obvious one is have you tried springing the trap yourself? Thats all I can think of for now, let us know how you get on. PS. Do a search on this forum for trapping rabbits in cages, there are some VERY successful trappers, I think Chalkwarren is but one, there a
  20. I wonder if that's the same Laidlaw from Jedburgh...
  21. Can you put a picture up of one? H
  22. Cheeky sod. Have you managed to hit that shed yet? Thanks Comanche. H
  23. I have got a couple of body grips I want to set in mesh tunnels on roofs and trees, I would like to make the tunnels myself cause I'm a tight so and so and need a couple of pictures of the clips if anyone would like to post them? Cheers H
  24. I want to congratulate you on YOUR behaviour. Unloading or making safe is the FIRST thing you do when you see someone. I understand the Supers actions a little, but I used to carry a shotgun and always unloaded first, by all means keep it closed so the person/s you are talking to don't know that you are not ready for anything, but one complaint, one misfire, one anything and bang goes your license or worse. Well Done on knowing your stuff. H
