Take off the silencer and fire a few shots through it. See if this makes the slightest difference. A friends gun bsa lightning I think, didn't shoot straight until the silencer was off, he had fitted it and made a hash, sent the pellets off left and right but not up and down. Could be a related problem and worth investigating before spending money. Good luck. H

I fancy having a go at making some torsion springs for a top catching larson trap. Any one have any experience with this? I could easily get high tensile stainless steel wire of a reasonable guage and make a simple jig, heating them above 300 degrees would be difficult though. I have ordered six proper ones from solway feeders so I can at least make a start on a trap. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. H

i'd take em straight to my last customer that still owes me a days wage........lol there ya go girls n boys, yer new home......... LOL. Guilty of letting them go at the moment. As you can see it is set by a wood pile, so wood mice is all i'm getting, and unless the same ones keep coming back, I have had 14 separate mice, (most was five at once). If I wanted to kill them I could use harsh language or sing to them! I would remove the restraining wires and tip into bucket, they could then be dealt with quickly and humanely...by posting them to my ex via special delivery...

Would certainlt work for the rats, weasels etc.

The funnel is made from nails pointed in at an angle. The circles are two lead rings I made and the nails are driven through the under side one and trapped by the top one. H

Well it could (I think) only have been either a rook, magpie or jay, and the field is covered in rooks most of the day turning over the horse and sheep shit. Seemed a reasonable assumption but happy to be proved wrong! EDIT: The back end wasn't touched though, which I have seen from corvids in the past. H

Made a cage box for Snaremans Victor pro rat trap. 2" entrance with mesh at the back for a daylight view and allow the sweet aromas of bait to waft through... Nothing but bloody wood mice...

Been working nights and early mornings. Checked the snares this morning before getting off home and this is what I found... Rooks had had the eye out already! It is now rook and magpie bait for the larson. H

Hi Youngmiller. Visit the site fourteen acre wood. John B's site (A couple of posts above this one in his signature). It will show you how to make one, thats when I stole his secret plans from. One thing I learned that has not been mentioned (I think). When balancing the seesaw, put the lock wire on first and then balance it across a piece of dowel to determine where the balance rod should be stapled. Otherwise the seesaw will be back heavy (although I used galanised fence wire which is heavy), I adjusted mine recently and it works much better. H

Have to agree with all of the above. An animal kept alive overnight in a snare will cut itself to pieces throwing itself around. Unbelievably stressfull on the animal too. Also think if a badger/fox comes across a trapped meal, or is lured by the squealing? A quick death is required in all cases. H

Forgot to say well done on the mythbusting front btw. Me and my squirrels are very happy thank you for asking. I am happier than they are though..

Snaring, trapping or hunting without permission

With a normal Air rifle, springs or valves as supplied with the gun will be built to give just under 12 ft lb WHATEVER the barrel length! The main barrel length issue will revolve around accuracy not power, unless of course you start with a long barrel and cut it right down, then you will have power and accuracy issues! Barrel length will depend on your preference and what you want to do with the gun, simple as that! When I said short barrel, I meant one cut down!! Deke is very correct when it comes to power through a rifle designed with a short barrel. H

Well done on the kill first of all. If your scope is set up at 30 yards dead centre, then move a target to 25 yards and aim for bully. The pellet should shoot high, without firing again, sight up exactly the same as before but this time, with the cross hair on centre, look at where your pellet struck in comparison with the mildots, was it one mildot high? If so, aim the first mildot above the centre hairs at bully and shoot, you should hit centre. At twenty do the same. Then move out to 35 yards, 40 yards, etc. This will tell you which mildot to sight with depending on the distance. O

Personally, a full length barrel for me. It gives better accuracy. It is also well known that if a barrel is too short, the maximum possible velocity is not acheived, what this length is for a .22 air rifle is I don't know. Some people use carbine due to weight or space limitaions. I prefer the longer barrel. Not sure this helps you at all... H

Snaring, trapping or hunting without permission
Holdaway replied to Holdaway's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I am in total agreement with you about the political element. So I for one will always seek permission. As a poacher would you lose something from your sport if you were given permission? This is a reasonable question not a piss take. If not, then wouldn't getting permission save you a lot of hassle and sneaking around? I know no-one would snare a pet on purpose, but if it happens by accident, a snare laid by someone mindless, untrained, then the law will jump on us all from a great height. The celebrities, most of whom haven't got an ounce of sence between them, are trying to b -
Snaring, trapping or hunting without permission
Holdaway replied to Holdaway's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Guess I'm not allowed my own opinion then huh? Yes there has been poaching since someone first started owning land, I won't deny it. Why do any of us bother to get permission then? Lets all buy guns without licenses then too shall we? After all, hardly anybody is going to bother are they? A stranger snaring your cat/dog, shots going off in the middle of the night, strangers walking across your garden with firearms? Well done, let's see more of it... No offence taken btw. I have my opinion and everyone else has theirs, I'm not allowed to voice mine? I thought the Nazis had -

Snaring, trapping or hunting without permission
Holdaway replied to Holdaway's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I can understand your frustration at having no permissions, I truly can. I didn't just walk into mine, I had to work hard at it and was turned down more often than not. Luckily my inlaws have 4 acres, this includes a tiny wood, and a large paddock. So here I can try out my traps and so on. The whole point of this post was, if you tell me that you have no permission to shoot/hunt/fish, and I give advice to you, I might also be breaking the law. Maybe, maybe not, but I am not willing to risk it. If it gets around that I am aiding and abetting poachers in anyway, I too might have no perm -
Well done Stubby. Word of mouth customers are the best, so a good job first time round often leads to more work. H

Don't worry I wouldn't gas it. I don't use gas at all. I was only kidding about the propane! Nope. Fox trap build coming up, then get a man in with a heavy duty rifle. 222 minimum. Of course the ricochet could be fun...

Excellent hazel trap, I will be making a few of these myself over the weekend, using 1"X3/4" laths. When catching pheasants for breeding we used to catch no end of woody's. Great trap and simple to build/use. I wnder if a maggy would use it? Don't see why not! Well done! H

No offence taken Ian, but thanks. The hole is right under a tight rhodedhendron so I can't get to it. The ground is pure red sand and still no tracks or droppings. There are no marks on the nearby trees which often accompany a badger sett. Sheep in the field over the wire fence so dogs are out I'm afraid. I like the propane sugestion if a little drastic at this stage! I can track any animal in britain and quite a few from other countries also, so no probs identifing tracks. I will build a fox trap (cage), as the squirrels I kill are all being taken at night. If its a bad
