Snaring, trapping or hunting without permission
Holdaway replied to Holdaway's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Thought you might feel that way Pip. Is this your post? Just to add lads no call to get all paranoid im just looking advice on trapping rabits, even if i didn t have permission its hardly crime of the century Yes it is. It may not be crime of the century, but you get caught and see how funny it is, then you explain all nice and friendly like to the nice bobby, 'but I got told how to do it on such and such a forum, and they said it was ok'... Paranoid? Maybe. I have my permissions, and I had to work a little to get them. I won't lose them, and I don't need vermin trapping t -
Yep, according the 'pinned' posting by G.S. Waters, you can use an old milk carton, coke bottle, or anything that is a wide enough tube/holder. H

I use peanuts, hazelnuts, almonds, monkey nuts, wheat, and conkers! Once I caught the first, I rubbed his genitals all over my other traps, nearby trees and along the pole to the bait station. Seems to work fine, the smell of my hands doesn't seem to bother them, and I smoke... H

Where can I get 1 inch mesh of 10 -12 guage? Google search is crap. 16 guage is too soft. H

ratchermans first trip with the wires
Holdaway replied to woodga's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Hi Woodga, could you drop me a PM when you get a minute? I would like a dvd also, mine won't be lent out... Cheers H -
I have had quite a few people asking me for advice on the best methods to use for rabbits, pheasants, etc. Now I am not an expert, never claimed to be. My father was a gamekeeper in Scotland, and I remember a lot of the stuff he used to do/tell me, but there are others on here who have been doing vermin control for a lifetime. This post really is about people who want to know how to poach. It is inspired by the 'hardly the crime of century' and 'whose to know?' crap I get, and some of the posts I have seen. I would freely give any advice that I can to anyone, if I can't help then

E Veniard price list from 1989
Holdaway replied to comanche's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
all these companies are the same ditchy, they pay the trappers a pittance and they want the huge profits, cut them out and advertise them yourself. Got to agree with snareman. Advertise them yourself on a 'as available' basis. Get a price book or find a site selling the stuff and compare, sell yours pence cheaper and still make a tidy profit. I use all mine myself, squirrel tails, jay wings et al. I give a few away to fellow fisherman cos I'm not a tight b*****d...well not much. H -

Thought I might post some pics of what I feel is the minimum in camouflage when roost shooting, stalking and shooting over decoys with an airgun. Jacket, trousers and hat are I think the minimum Scrim with long panel is a great improvement for hiding the face and the shirt when jacket is open With scrim and gloves, a big improvement Full ghillie suit top Of course you don't need to take things this far! The scrim was made from an old marks and sparks shirt from a charity shop. The rifle is also camouflaged, but you will notice the new scope

Well what do you know? The blood in the ear is where I belted the little buger with a great big stick. I didn't have the gun with me. Later that day Rook bait, gutted and minus tail (salmon flies) Well another one well proven I think. Well done G.S. H

As a teenager many moons ago, I used to hunt with a catapult too. I used a black widow, or a home made one using motorbike innertube as the elastic. I hunted with standard sized marbles and took a few rabbits. Now I wouldn't use one on anything. The airgun at or near 12 ftlb is far superior to any catapult no matter how good you are with a catty. I also have to tell you that if caught by the police hunting with a catapult you will be in hot water. I know they are not illegal, but it is frowned upon deeply. Hunt with one if you like, but I recommend a gun. And one other thin

One of my traps was ruined this morning. I have made a double ended trap using 2 inch galvanized mesh, the one that caught the jay. I made it with an inside drop door with lock bar. I went to check the traps this morning and whatever was in it bent the door out completely, I mean completely! Whether I caught something incredibly strong, something opened it from the outside to get at whatever was in, or the mesh is too soft. Where can I get 1 inch galvanized mesh about 10 guage or even less for a decent price? I don't really care how heavy they are, but if they can contain a rabid

Ok, ok, just cause you two guys know what you are doing and I don't! I have moved the hoops another foot or so back from the tube, anymore and they will be in the trees! The pole I am using is only about five feet long and I didn't want the little buggers to drop off the trees onto the pole and bypass the hoops. Maybe that won't happen... fingers crossed. I have also taken out the wire 'guiders' as both duckwing and snareman have suggested, it did already cross my mind that the snare wire might get tangles up in them. Thanks for the advice guys, always appreciated.

Hi Duckwing. The nails are actually spare bits of wire, using them as a guide because the pole is so wide. Pole was the only one to hand, and also the snare hoops are where they are for the same reasons. I have a feeling that the wire will tangle the snare at drop off, but what the hell you have to try right? As soon as a longer pole comes into my possession I will swap the bait station over. This is really just a trial to see if I can entice the greys to feed there. H

Bet the title gets e'm up in arms! What do you think of these for my cunning plan then guys and girls? The came off an easter bonnet! Cute huh? I think in an open nest of straw or something, or maybe out on the lawn? H

New 'Super Rat' Discovered In New Guinea
Holdaway replied to a topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Thats hilarious! H -
Made a bait station today (Pics below). Using 4 inch plastic drainpipe about 10 inches long, two fence wire hoops to attach the snares to and already prebaited with peanuts, monkey nuts, almonds, hazelnuts and wheat. I will leave the station well fed for a couple of days before setting the snares. Anyone interested in making one should read the topic Squirrel Snaring in the pinned section of this forum. H

Ravens and hooded crows can both be trapped if you have a call bird. We used to trap hoodies in a cage trap (about 8X6X4 feet) Similar to a ladder trap this used a funnel top entrance about 7 or 8 inches across. If you need to destroy a lamb or shoot a hare, then use it as bait as well as half a dozen chicken eggs made into a semi hidden nest. When you first bird is in don't kill it, use it as a decoy. It works H
