  1. like you i have left em to it,but more are lost if the eggs dont go under the hen on the same day due to size diff in chicks when hatched ,so dummy eggs is the best way imo. I never had a problem matey, but my canarys were good feeders. raised many a fully clutch of five with no problems. In fact, i will go as far as to say it was rare to loose a chick... same here jd,ive got 3 clutches of 4 just ready to leave the nest and all ive done is feed and water em ok lads lets just agree to disagree, didnt see that one coming a tag team Just said it as I saw it Francolin.... 2. Many moons ago, my uncle had a fairly good dog called Jim. He got his fair share of hares on the biggest land that was close, that being Pocklington. Until the Law intervened that is and they were all summonsed. But, i'm pretty certain that although Jim could do those hares he would have probably been blown away if he had got onto a decent strong fen hare. I think there is a major difference between going out and running the odd hare, and going hare coursing.... I do find it interesting that the one thing those that slag fenland hares/hare coursers off have in common is...that they haven't
  3. poll's and siskins are both great birds, but you can see them at their finest in a spacious flight......
  4. No Fireman i didnt, that would have defeated the object. My only objective being to propagate British Birds in as natural a fashion as possible. If they couldnt hatch them then that was how it was meant to be....
  5. And last but not least..(phew!) the most beautiful of eggs, half way through the full clutch.... I only had the birds for about 8 years so i suppose in the grand scheme of things im a bit of a messer, but i often think about them.....
  6. She also enjoyed a bit of brocolli too....
  7. Collecting material for lining the nest...
  8. Reed bunting hen...sitting tight.
  9. This chaffy hen loved eating 'casters' that i got from maggots....
  10. This was a great experience watching the siskins courting, building and feeding their chicks. I took this pic with a small camera from inside the aviary at the range of less than one foot. I couldnt get over how confiding he was, a great bird and a doting parent, as too was the hen bird...
  11. My cock yellowhammer, just trying to get the hen to start nesting...I took this pic from about two foot away, and i was proud of those 'hammers for its hard to get a steady one...He looks a real dapper gent in his breeding finery...
  12. This was the cock dunnock, a bird that was very tame for the species. Randy little beggar he was too....
  13. A very rare shot of a pair of blackcaps sharing the nest duties. I really struggled to breed this warbler, just couldn't do it, but had success with getting them to lay, which is something ii suppose. A cracking pair of birds.
  14. This is one of my canaries. I started to breed hen birds that were nearly all white with red eyes. This one was a lovely hen birds...As steady as a rock.
  15. Just a few pics from the aviary birds of five or six years ago.... This was my gorgeous hen bully...she is sat on my thumb eating a banana...her favourite food in the world. As you can see, she was a bit steady...
  16. great pic,i wish i could find a few birds let alone feed them by hand awesome It wasn't wild matey...it was an aviary bird of mine...
  17. I will see if i can dig a few more out.....
  18. This was one of my favourite birds. She was as steady as a rock and would actually take food from my fingers when sat on the nest. She was a great rearer too.....thought you might like to see this unusual piccy...JD
  19. Re-Opened on the request of Oly. Keep it legal chaps (if at all possible)...
  20. It is illegal to use a terrier to ground when protecting lambs. However, if the fox is shot and injured and a terrier is being used for humane retrieval/tracking and they both end up in an earth then you have got to dig down and rescue the terrier, if you believe he is stuck. Once the terrier is out of the earth then i believe it is legal to shoot the fox again to despatch it, and to end any un-nessesary suffering. That is my take on the law as it stands at present. But I could have misunderstood it. Hope this helps.
  21. Were they the for-runners to thr tree's we have today. I know it was cycads, but did they come from the horsetails? Something to do with the rigid cell wall isn't it?

  23. I like the canary notes better than goldies to be perfectly honest..... the yellowhammers i bred were quite good too. The unusual ones such as the Blackcap and Reedbunting have pleasant warbles and not as loud as the cock robin who is nuts come the end of February..... Still, once spring was here and they stopped making that silly, annoying 'chirp', the chaffys were my favourite and could not be beaten for power and song...but thats just my ears, i don't expect others to agree...
  24. Christian....number 41 is the best you can get IMO. When i was in a sweepstake years ago that was my number and i got my fair share of wins with it.....
