  1. A .243 can bruise up quite a bit of meat mind. Speed has a lot to do with it as well as bullet size.
  2. You are right Snap. With a perfect shot the .243 would drop an Elephant. I just like to have a little to spare. The way I see it is this... There are dozens of calibres available to us and Sika are big Deer. Not only big but hard! For the Fox I've always said the .243 takes some beating. That's what it was made to do and it does it extremely well. For big Deer though there are bigger bullets. This guy is obviously new to stalking and no matter how good you are, things can go wrong. I like that little bit of power to overcome the odd error in judgement. If you get it completely wrong th
  3. I couldn't agree more. You did say that bullet choice comes second though and second is quite high on the list of requirements. I don't think it hurts to go a bit bigger if you expect to see big Deer? In my part of the world I see Munties, Roe and occasionally Fallow. A .243 is fine for that, I use a 7x57R and 6.5x55. Neither of my primary stalking guns are huge, they're just not small. There's a reason the .243 is the minimum calibre for Deer and that's because it's the smallest that will do the job. It was never designed to be a Deer round but will do.
  4. I've never shot a Sika as we don't have them around here. I've been told they're hard as nails though so perhaps something a little bigger wouldn't be a bad shout! If I was you I'd try to get your Sika permission in writing. Then send it off with an application for a .308. You could ask at the same time to have the new ACPO wording on your FAC which states "and any other lawful quarry". The .308 is a good all round calibre. It's a bit big for Fox but then you don't want to eat it do you?! Dead is dead, it doesn't have to stay in one piece! If your force don't like the .308 this ear
  5. Personally I'd just have a quiet word with your FEO about it. After three years you should be in with a reasonable chance if you show that dropping the restriction would be benificial to your shooting. I got mine open after a year. Some forces insist on it being after renewal and I've even heard of some that say that an open ticket doesn't exist. It all depends where you are. Whatever happens I think going in heavy with the support of any organisation would be rude to say the least. You've got to give them the chance to allow it first. It pays to keep them on side. After all it's human nat
  6. A .270 will do more than take Deer, it will beat the s*** out of them! I very much doubt that the police would allow it with Fox as a primary quarry (the reason you want the rifle). It's on the upper end of the power scale for Deer. I assume by the Deer comment that you wish to shoot Deer? By your question about the .270 though I get the feeling you haven't done much of it before if any? What Deer species would you want to shoot? The .243 is a great Fox round and is Deer legal for all UK species. It's a little lacking for Sika and Reds but for all others is fine. A step up that would s
  7. A .223 is hardly a cannon. Depending on your force I'd expect them to be ok with it if you say you need to shoot Foxes. I'm in Gloucestershire and a mate of mine put in for a HMR, then a matter of a couple of months later got a .223 and then a .308. No mentoring involved. Apart from a Hornet the .223 is at the lower end of the power scale of centrefires so I can't see it being an unreasonable request. If it came down to it though do you have anyone who would be willing to mentor you? It feels like a pain to start with but really it's only a matter of a couple of months and a few boxes of a
  8. If you can show a genuine need for more than one calibre then there's no reason you shouldn't get them. I got .22lr, .17HMR and 6.5x55 on my first application. I'd suggest you drop the FAC air and perhaps ask for a .22lr and .223. That will give you a good quiet gun where your normal air rifle is out of it's depth and a good humane Fox gun. If you think you may need to shoot Deer too then sub the .223 for .243.
  9. Nice shooting John. It's good to hear you got one of them. Even if there are more to contend with you've certainly helped the cause! Does anyone really believe that an adult Fox can't or wont kill a newborn Lamb? They're not that big are they, and any predator that can take a large Buck Rabbit or Hare should be able to take down a Lamb just as easily. I spotted two Foxes when I was out last night but I scared them away! It was light and I pulled the truck into the field to look for bunnies. Nearly run the bloody Fox over and he legged it into the hedge closely followed by (I assume) a
  10. You missed .338! What can I use my .338 Win Mag for?
  11. I'd suggest you both ask for a co-terminous SGC and FAC. Being young I'd guess you're on a limited budget so if you both go for both certificates then you can both list both guns on your licenses. That way you can share a safe and guns so you can both use which ever you feel you need on the day. Getting a FAC and SGC at the same time only costs an extra tenner each and you'll save that by not needing two safes. I'd go for a shotgun of either 12 or 20 bore and a .17HMR or .22lr, depending on how far away you need to be able to shoot the bunnies.
  12. Nice shooting! What's the rifle? .223?
  13. I'd say £250 would get you the very least you need for a large centrefire. A second hand better make would be my choice if money is tight. If you've got plenty to spare than I'd say £450 would be a good starting point but no need to go over £1k. I've used a lot of cheap scopes and they're hopeless. I now have a Docter on my .22lr which many would consider too good but I can shoot virtually in the dark without a lamp. I'm selling a Bushnell elite 3200 5-15x50 for £250 if you're interested? RRP is over £500 and it would work a treat for what you want it for. On a gun like that I cer
  14. Looking through your list you've got yourself a good little setup there. As you say the scope isn't the best, but you can afford to skimp a bit on a .22lr as the ranges you shoot to aren't that huge. It's plenty good enough for your needs and you can always get a better one later if you feel the need. I'm a short barrel person myself, for a practical gun you just don't want them any longer than they have to be because once the mod is on they get too hard to move around in a vehicle. It was a good move getting the trigger kit, sometimes the CZ trigger is terrible but with a little cheap wo
  15. If you want something unusual and can home load try a .17 Ackley Hornet. Same size bullet as the HMR but more than 1000FPS faster! It's amazing! The .22 Hornet is also good if you can home load? If not go for a .22WMR. The HMR was too light for Fox in my experience.
  16. I thought that was the case in Gloucestershire too. Then I asked for a .300 Win Mag and got my FAC back with .300 rifle on it. I phoned them to question it and they said that they'd done it in case I found another .300 magnum that would be better? A very thoughtful way of doing things seeing as I didn't even ask for it. Top marks for Glos police
  17. I'm not really sure what you could have done to make him take that approach. You got a breach of the peace seven years ago, is that it? What were the circumstances of that? Have you done anything since? Cautions? Speeding tickets? Anything at all? Did you list everything on the application? I can only think that there is something you said that he didn't like. I have no idea what but he obviously didn't approve of something. On a positive note and another way of looking at it perhaps because of your conviction he couldn't give you a clear yes because he doesn't have the authority? When
  18. Your FEO said he cannot support your application the the chief? That to me says that he doesn't think you should have one? If you were charged 7 years ago then it shouldn't apply and I can't see the issue though?
  19. I'm jealous now, mine doesn't look that good!
  20. I really hope your lad sees sense and pushes this scum bag away. He's obviously got no interest in the kid at all. I'm really sorry to hear he's got this far. If it was me and this scum bag still has a dabble with the hard stuff I'd be tempted to approach a higher end dealer and offer whatever it costs to get the best and cleanest 100% nasty stuff you can. Then get it to him on the cheap, priced at next to nothing as low priced junk that needs a good strong dose to work. That should sort him

    Got Arrested

If you thought that you were insured then I have every sympathy for you. It was an unfortunate mistake and the outcome does seem extremely harsh. I think you could appeal because you didn't get the letter, but then you may be in trouble for mot telling them you'd moved. We've all done daft things at some point. He was only driving his mates car. If it was his own car he wasn't insured for then I'd say throw the book at him, the worse they could do the better. Intentionally avoiding insurance costs the rest of us a fortune and I'm always pleased to hear of people getting vast fines and bans
  22. OH MY GOD!!! They're having a laugh right? The woman said it took her half an hour to sort it so she charges £30 on top of the £20 TNT fee? I bought the gun privately so it's not the sellers fault but I just had to ring them to check they weren't taking the p***! I can't believe that, nobodys ever charged me that much before! Most dealers just want £25! I'm shocked. If that was my local dealer they wouldn't be seeing me again. I feel well and truly bent over!
  23. I've heard of people using really thin brass tube from a model shop, cut off to just short of the case shoulder and then Epoxy resin fill the case around the tube so the primer flash goes up the tube to the powder. It's a lot of work but onkly needs doing once. I think fire formed brass is best.
  24. I have a .17 Ackley Hornet and a 7x57R. Both are pretty non fashionable
  25. This close to the time it happened and considering the situation I think you've got more chance of getting a knighthood that a FAC/SGC! I wouldn't even bother applying just yet. It's quite a minor issue but given that you were angry at your ex and drunk at the time they're just not going to risk it this soon. It's that close you may as well be asking for the forms so you could fill them in in the cell! I'd leave it for at least six months then ring them and express your interest. Tell them the details and ask how soon they think you could reasonably ask for a certificate. Tell them tha
