For a start, no comments on the title please I'm wondering if anyone local to me hunts with birds? And if so would you be willing to take me out one day and show my how it's done? I don't want to get involved in anything I could mess up (really, I have no idea how this lark works) but would just like to watch and maybe learn from someone in the know. Obviously if there's anything I can offer in return I'd be happy to return the favour (maybe an evening of bunny shooting?). I'm in Gloucester, but wouldn't mind a half hour drive or maybe a bit more. Can anyone help? Cheers, Neil

Game farm hand needed
njc110381 replied to stork's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
What a great chance for a young lad to get away from his parents and do something fun! I'm amazed nobody's replied. With accomodation and maybe some rough shooting included it doesn't get much better than this! -
You'll get a different answer from everyone on this probably, so here's my opinion. Phone your FEO and ask him. The rules state that you must be accompanied by the landowner or his agent. His agent could be anything from the tennant farmer to someone with written shooting rights from the landowner, depending on how your force interpret the law. I always see the agent as someone with written permission, as they are acting on the instruction of the landowner (that makes the permission holder his agent). Another thing you must be sure of is that your friends permission extends to guests, othe

If you're really looking for something special and don't mind spending your money, look up Cosmi shotguns. If you're a normal every day shooter like myself or most of the guys on here, you'll not be disappointed with a Beretta 391 for half your budget

I take it you're looking to buy an Xtrema? One tip I can give you as the ex owner of one is unless you like a really long gun, buy the 26" barrel model. The action is very long on the Xtrema, and I found my 28" version hard to handle. I usually shoot a 28" Beretta O/U, and it was a good 4" longer than that! If you have a locktop cabinet, you may have to take it apart to get it in! As for the mod, I have a SAK on both my .22 and .17hmr. They do the job well for the price

I've shot springers for most of my life. Then I bought an S200. They're amazingly accurate and quiet, with a mod and mag kit fitted they're amazing. I sold mine because I wasn't using it enough, and now I wish I'd kept it. If you shoot regularly get the S200, from someone who's shot a lot with both Edited to say PM me if you choose the Lightning, there may be one for sale!

I've just ordered a Bushnell elite 5-15x50 to go on my .223. I have a Leupold 3-9x40 on my HMR and it's pretty good.
-
I have a Leupold 3-9x40 and it pulls in nearly the same light as my 8x56 Schmidt&Bender up to 6x mag. As said above though, get the 50 anyway. All things being equal, it will give you a few more minutes without the lamp at dusk so could be the decider between going home empty handed or with some bunnies. I only got the 3-9x40 because it was going really cheap
-
The .223 has so much more to offer. It's more popular so ammo is easy to find and cheap. It is slightly more powerful although not a lot. There's a vast range of rifles in .223. As for .22-250, look at the ammo cost, shorter barrel life, added noise (although all of them are loud compared to a rimfire!) when compared to the .223. You get more range, but do you need it? I've just been through the centrefire .22 thing myself. I went for .223. 300 yards is a long way, and it will fly that far just as easily as the others at a fraction of the cost
-
I'm no expert but .223 with light bullets should do the job nice and cheap.
-
I'd sell the hornet. It's too close to the .223 to need both (unless you're markbivvy ). I don't like the idea (never used one) of the long bolt travel of the Tikka. Why should you have to pull the bolt back like the round is a 30-06 with a case as small as a .223? Don't get me wrong, my 6.5x55 is a lovely gun, but I just don't like this feature on the smaller calibres. On the other hand in .243 it would be a nice rifle. .243 doesn't kick hard, I don't think you need a varmint barrel. My 6.5x55 stainless will cloverleaf at 100 yards, what more do you need? I've ordered a CZ Varmint in .2

Trust you to comment It wasn't as bad as it sounds (although the more I say the worse it seems)! I made a home made device and set it off in a large hotel garden. It was a long way away from where anyone would be and was just a good out of the way place for a bit of testing. I really didn't expect it to go off like it did. It made a real low boom which was more felt than heard, and made a huge hole in the lawn. It was a lot more powerful than I expected, and if I'd have know what was going to happen I wouldn't have done it. It was supposed to be a bit of fun making some smoke and a bit of

I got charged with posession of explosives when I was 18 . I'm 27 today and have had my FAC for 4 months. You can get on ok, but it depends on the situation. My charge was pretty serious, but I've only ever been in trouble once and I was very honest about it at the time rather than giving them the run around. All you can do is ask. Unless you were violent or a repeat offender you should be ok after 5 years of being a good boy Edited to say tell them everything, because trust me they know it! I've known people in their 40's get told they got caught stealing sweets when they were kids. The

filling in my application form
njc110381 replied to Jack NUFC's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
As above really. Just phone the police HQ for your area and ask to speak to someone in the firearms department. They will put you through to someone who can help. The fee is £50. A countersignature is just someone who has known you for over two years and is important (ish). Teachers, accountants, your boss, bank workers etc. Pretty much anyone who has a responsible job (apart form a copper, they're not trustworthy) -
I'm just getting out of my mentoring condition now, but I asked for it that way to start with. I think (and this may annoy some of you) that some kind of mentoring or DSC is important for new FAC holders, but think it should cover all calibres not just Deer rifles. Just think what can happen if you get your backstop judgement wrong with a .243 (the smallest Deer cal.) or even just a .22lr. These things can fly a long way and take some stopping! I think some first hand experience under the watchful eye of an experienced shot is very important for safety. It should be seen as enjoyable. I certai

We're going to meet up at a local pub for a chat. I'm really hoping I can come up with something for him, I'm pretty sure I can. I've had some funny ideas put forward by the FEO in question myself. One that really sticks in my mind was on a land check. I couldn't shoot over a path across a field that was in clear view so totally safe, even though it wasn't a documented footpath (trespassers short cut)! I just agreed with him and moved on, but it's total isn't it. They also wanted to see evidence of Deer damage before they'd allow me to shoot them on the ground I find the best way t

I'm only offering because this situation could get expensive and could also take this guys sport away from him. It's not often I share my permissions with anyone, but in this situation someone has to help out. I'd hope someone would do it for me if I was in the same situation. As it says at the top of the beginner section "we must always remember together we stand divided we fall.....". I'd hate to see anyone have their sport taken away from them!

I think i have been badly ripped off.
njc110381 replied to a topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Don't worry about what you've seen another one sell for. Every gun I've ever bought I've spotted for less afterwards, that's just life! If you were happy to pay that amount for the gun in the first place it can't be that bad. Just shoot with the thing and enjoy it! -
I'd have the Predator myself

Hi. I'm new here but local to you. This situation seems really out of order. The Gloucester police are a little strange at times but I've had no real problems with them. If you don't mind, send me some more details via PM (location etc). I have a couple of permissions I don't get to as often as I'd like, so I may be able to get you some non regular permission that would at least the police off for you. They have no right to do this to you, but if I can help make the situation easier for you then I'm happy to help

Hey guys. This is my first post on here but I've been reading for a few weeks. I've just found Remmys post about the 2p sized group at 300 yards and had to comment. What a great shot! I wish I could do that. I've just got into rifle shooting (had my FAC about 3 months) and for now an inch at 100 is about my best regular group size. I shoot a Tikka T3 Laminate Stainless in 6.5x55, SYSS 10/22 and a CZ American .17hmr. I'm at an exciting point right now, I've just sent my FAC in for variation for a .223 and to have my mentor condition removed. Hopefully it will be back soon and I'll be a
