  1. Given the choice I will have a laminate stock every time. They're much more stable than standard wood and look much better than synthetic. The best of both worlds IMO
  2. If it's FAC air than that's a little different. That makes it still not ideal but better. At the end of the day you killed the Fox. It died a lot more quickly than it would have if you'd left it and it sounds like it was really sufferring. You did the right thing to try to take it. Sadly in that state it sounds like it wouldn't have been in much more pain if it had got away so it was worth a try if you were confident. EDIT... I think I would have used the shotgun. The chances are slim that it would have bothered anyone and in the circumstances I think it would be considered reasonable.
  3. Whether a caution is a conviction or not I don't know, but write it on the application anyway! They know you have it and the more open you are the better you'll look. Please don't skip it on the form, I've heard of people being refused simply because they've failed to be honest about their past. How long ago was it? Time is a great healer and for something that minor I'd think a couple of years would be enough.
  4. It depends how soon you plan to buy the next rifle? If I had those calibres listed I'd be aiming to end up with a .22lr and .223, and one for one vary the .17HMR for a Deer calibre later. Get the .22. It's cheap to shoot so you can go out and shoot loads of rounds until you get over the initial excitement of having the gun without breaking the bank! The .22 set up will probably also be the cheapest. What guns do you like the look of? Generally it's good to spend the same on the scope as you will on the rifle, but with a rimfire that's not so important. Don't skimp on the glass though,
  5. I understand that maybe you didn't have the right tool for the job but you could always call on someone here to do the deed for you. I've got an open FAC, a quick message from anyone local and I'd happily come out to make sure the job's done properly. I'm sure most people would. I would never suggest shooting a Fox with a standard air rifle. It's hit and miss whether it would penetrate far enough to do the deed, let alone cleanly.
  6. When I asked my FEO about the any legal quarry the other week he said that I could shoot whatever I like as long as it's legal to do so. I would shoot Deer with that condition, it's legal quarry isn't it!
  7. At last! I've been looking for one of these for ages and haven't had much luck. I used one when I visited a mate in Canada and loved it, but when I got back they just didn't exist! I've phoned around everywhere and nobody had them. I got an e-mail from guntrader yesterday and a chap is selling an as new BPS Stalker (black and synthetic). He said he just doesn't use it and needs the space, it comes with all the stuff it had when it was new and has been used three times. So, payment sent and it will be on its way shortly. I have no idea what the guys at the clay club will think. It looks lik
  8. My first choice if you can get one would be .243 because you can change your conditions for free to include Deer at a later date. If you can't have that then .223 has good range and easily available ammo. The .22 Hornet is a sub 200 yard rifle but is much more gentle and mild than the bigger .22s. These days I use my .17AH for most of them or 6.5x55 if they're shy.
  9. My suggestion would be to talk to the land owner but not involve the FEO. I'm really not sure what you can do at this stage but you really do need to find out whether this guy is just talking crap or whether he is actually shooting the Deer with his HMR. If you find that he is taking the Deer with his rimfire then you need evidence. I would assume that he would be head shooting them, so if possible you need to get hold of the head. Maybe even ask him if he will let you have one to work on and mount next time he gets one. If you can do that you're home and dry. A head with a HMR bullet in i
  10. You can have two guns of the same calibre if you want to, but why would you? Unless you want a target specific rifle and a field gun I don't really see the point but each to their own I guess. Just put in a variation for another rifle. It's not unheard of to have two rifles of the same calibre, in fact a lot of people do it. If they ask just tell them what you've just told us - that you want an auto for ease of use whilst lamping and the bolt action for whatever it is that you still want it for. Personally I don't like autos. They look good and seem like a good idea but you wait until you
  11. Blimey, you're not wanting to eat what you shoot then?! Those are some serious long range rounds. Just the fact that you're asking has made me feel a little out of my depth! The 6BR seems very popular with the top shots, so there must be a reason for that? If I was to go for a custom of this calibre then I think that's what I'd buy. I shoot a .17AH which is what made me take a look at this topic. It's got nothing on the kit you're looking it, but it serves its purpose very well. I guess it just depends what sort of ranges you want to push out to.
  12. If it was anywhere near civilisation I'd shoot it. These things are known to be a danger to humans in other countries, what makes them any different here? I should think that ignoring the conditions of your FAC under these circumstances (ie public safety) is reasonable. I'd take lots of pictures and report it. You could always say it was squaring up to a friend and get them in sharpish to leave some good footprints as evidence to be on the safe side! I wouldn't leave it. It's not native so it's not welcome. Just like the Grey Squirrel really!
  13. I've had a stainless Tikka for two years and it's been out in some terrible weather, sometimes spending a couple of days without getting dried out! It's fine. It has some minor discolouration from blood getting on it but certainly nothing that looks like rust. I'd take it back and grumble!
  14. Personally I'm a big fan of Barnes TSX. They're not cheap but they work very well on game and in my rifle.
  15. I got mine opened after a year. Now have all the rifles in my signature open, but back then it was the .22, .17HMR and 6.5x55. If you can support your need to have it open you should get it. Just wanting it before the five years is up may not be enough. I was told I needed at least five permissions to show that I had a lot of places to go to. I provided them and my FAC was returned open. As always though it's down to the force you are under. They all have different ideas which is annoying!
  16. They're quite simple to fit. I found that you have to hit the pins which hold the trigger assembley pretty hard, it's good to have a block of wood with a hole slightly bigger than the pins you are trying to punch out so you can rest the gun on it when you're tapping it. You have to be quite confident, it took me a couple of attempts to find the courage to hit it hard enough to get the pins out! As for worth fitting, definately. It totally transforms the gun. If I buy another CZ452 I'll buy another kit at the same time. It makes so much difference for what it costs that I feel it's daft not
  17. I really like Duck and Venison. Pheasant is nice too. Most other things I'm not too sure about. One thing's for certain, I really don't like Rabbit. I'd rather be veggie than eat Rabbit
  18. Snap Shot. I feel neck shots are a completely different area to chest shots. You need a good bullet in a .243 to hit a Stag in the boiler room and get a good exit and blood trail. When you look at neck shots the fast but light bullets of the .243 are probably better than the average .30 cal Deer bullet. When hitting the neck I'd have thought fast expansion would be the key so as to make as much mess as possible before exit? My Deer calibre is a 6.5x55 at the moment. I run 130 grn Barnes TSX through it. I have a 7x57r/12g combi gun on its way to me to take the 6.5s place and a slot for
  19. That's a nice little Munty. Well done for getting him. I've been trying for some time to get one for myself but they seem really hard to stalk compared to Roe. I'm not sure if anyone else finds this? Roe just stand there and let you shoot them, but Munties wont stand still even when you do manage to find one!
  20. I think it's very easy to give an opinion to an experienced shot and offend them. I haven't shot many Deer and sometimes find myself in this situation when I'm giving my view to people who shoot several Deer every week. I've come unstuck in the past when talking about things my friends have told me. I don't rate the .243 myself, not because I have experience of it not working for me, but because good honest blokes have told me it's not worked for them. Not forum people, but local stalkers who I know and trust. So when someone asks me how many Stags I've shot this season I can give the same ans
  21. It will be a .22. You can't get .17 subs. By the sound of this place I wouldn't touch it with a .22 rimfire and you have seen that for yourself. The CBs are ok but as you have found not that accurate. Can't you snare it or ferret it? Even if it means inviting someone in to do it for you? I'm sure there will be someone on here with ferrets who could help you and sharing opens many new doors. I've got loads of places to shoot with mates and they know they can come out with me any time too. It opens things up for everyone. EDIT... The other option is to stick an old bale in the field wher
  22. That's a nice Deer, and taken with a favourite calibre of mine too. Well done. It's a real shame about the context of the write up though. I've been reading a few posts regarding Deer and rifles and there is some reaaly disappointing squabbling going on here. Who cares if you shoot more Deer than Deker? Who cares if you don't agree on what calibres are best for what job? Who cares if he hasn't shot a Stag this year? Everyone's entitled to an opinion. I haven't been on here for some time but have recently returned. Have I missed something? It's really spoiling some good topics on a grea
  23. To help you choose, look at it like this....A few things to consider before you buy.... 1. How well do you handle recoil? That will give you some idea of what sort of round you want. 6.5x55 (gentle) or .30-06 (quite punchy). 2. What species do you plan to shoot? Well, you've said Fallow, Sika and Red. They're big Deer, so it's probably best you don't go for anything too small (I'd count out .243 personally. It will do the job but something bigger would be better). 3. Ammo availability? Check around your local dealers to see what they stock. If they don't stock it then it's not ideal, if the
  24. I'd go for a .22 Hornet too. I'm selling one in the ads section if anyone's interested, just thought I'd get that out in the open before anyone picks up on it. The Hornet is a great round. I'm only selling mine because I want to play with a custom so have bought a .17AH! The Hornet will do all a HMR or WMR will do, but can include fox at the same range! They're cheap to load for (about the same as HMR ammo) and offer more than twice the power. It's still mild compared to the bigger centrefires though, so you don't get the crazy muzzle blast and recoil from it. PM me if anyones interested
  25. NOW SOLD Hey guys. I'm selling my CZ527 Hornet. 18" barrel, in good used condition. Comes with scope mounts and an Ase Utra S5 mod. I'm looking for £600. The setup new would be around £1200, the mod alone is worth nearly £300 and is as new! I bought the gun used so have no idea of its age, but when I dropped in on Mike Norris (a top custom gun maker) he borescoped it for me and said it looked pretty reasonable. It shoots very well. I've got a new gun (well three actually!) coming so I need the space, make me an offer if you don't like the price because it has to go!
