  1. I'm not trying to say anything against shooting them but its a shame they can't be trapped and re-introduced in some areas where there are very few. I know on my patch there are perhaps half a dozen in one very small spot.
  2. In fact I've heard some FEOs say that anything over a .243 is overkill, to me dead is dead. I'm thinking along the lines of whether they'd grant one specifically for Fox, Deer & Boar. Only one way to find out.
  3. If its chambered for 70mm then that's all its suitable to shoot from it...considering its an old gun as well. I've never owned one but shot a few and the number of people who learnt to shoot with them is huge. If you want it just to knock around then its fine you just need to choose your range carefully with a .410 with your shot placement having to be spot on. Are you sure its 70mm? Never seen a 2 3/4" .410 cartridge. Only 50mm, 65/67mm and 76mm. Maybe you've mistaken the "0" for a "6"?
  4. I do find the .270 a little heavy on the shoulder when its unmodded and zeroing it but when you're actually stalking the likelihood of you firing more than one or even two rounds in succession isn't high. Obviously that begs the question as to whether he'd be granted a .270 for Fox. Some shooters I know have "occasional Fox" alongside their Deer conditions.
  5. A firearm has been discharged, it has then been pointed in someone's face. An obviously heated situation going on. The caller's car then being damaged whilst he's holding a potentially loaded firearm. All this and two local bobbies turn up with not even armed back up giving them a hand? I fail to believe that if your friend has had a loaded firearm pointed in his face which hasn't been investigated that the IPCC would brush it under the carpet.
  6. Again it begs the question as to why he has any certificates if there was a "concern for his safety" I doubt it would have been the first time if he was disabled. These things will happen until there is better information sharing and more regular checks.
  7. No need for permission of any kind for a SGC Good luck in that dustbowl
  8. To clarify, Why Austria or Germany, seems a little odd..
  9. everytime it comes back after a variation or renewal it says something different I'm sure we could find someone to write a white paper properly and then someone can sneak it on to the table of the House of Commons, they'd never notice!
  10. Would it really be too much to ask to have a Firearms Act that encompasses all of the other ones and has a definitive list of conditions so that they can't just make them up? I mean from Paulus' picture of his FAC, what place does that top condition have on an FAC? It should be sent as a letter.
  11. Any reputable gun dealer should be able to do that for you. If there is someone who has a decent hand for repairing guns then all the better. Just how badly is it in need of a clean?
  12. As for putting target shooting down, i'd wait until you're a full member of the club. You can still use the rifle on the range in the mean time.
  13. Mitchell, First of all, yes you can apply for an FAC when you are 17. You cannot buy firearms or ammunition until you are 18 but by the time you actually have it in your hands, then you should be 18 anyway. I would say that if your grandfather is prepared to give you permission to shoot then you have good reason and when it comes to putting the reason for wanting a .17HMR on your application form, then you just need to say "Vermin Control" As for Fox, its whether your police force allows the shooting of Fox with a .17HMR, some do, some don't. If you're planning to shoot "targets"
  14. What do you intend to use the gun for Stephen?
  15. Clay shoots use what is called a "Section 11 Exemption" It is a section under the Firearm(s) Acts that allows those without a certificate to borrow a club gun whilst on the shooting ground so they can have a go. Most clay shoots will have these and for shows almost certainly as they want people to just come and have a go.
  16. Not sure where the exact .223 calibre came from but never heard of any .22 centrefire from Hornet to .223 being refused for Fox. For instance I have a .222 which was granted without issue and before that I also had a Hornet. Then again, such is the inconsistency, my .17HMR is also conditioned on my FAC for Fox. Until they put it in statute, the Home Office guidance will continue to be misinterpreted or ignored whenever it suits.
  17. Looking at your list of guns, the same S/S is the one I mention in my post Yep! Its a cracking gun. Another thing is, because it was only a cheapie, i seem to be more happy using it without worrying about anything. I was worried about recoil when I got it, but i get much less felt recoil from it than I do my o/u`s. I'm quite a stocky guy anyway so recoil was never a problem, but now you mention it, I haven't noticed any perceived recoil at all with the S/S. I don't shoot heavy loads through it either which helps. 28gr of 7s does me for everything. Much to the dismay of my f

  19. Normally I would agree with Millet. However, I've recently had a change of heart... I've a cabinet full of Over/Unders which is what i've used for the majority of my shooting up to now, clays, game, wildfowling whatever. Whenever I've shot clays for a team or with the Welsh squad, it was always with an O/U because its the norm for clays. They're heavier, more pointable, there's a greater range of guns to choose from and thats what they were designed to do. I shoot well with the same gun I use for Clays as I do for game so it always accompanied me in the field as well. However I t
  20. I said the same thing after the Derrick Bird incident last year. No need for tighter laws, they can't get much tighter. But there needs to be more information sharing between medical practices and the police when it comes to license holders and to me, if I were the police and someone told me they had depression the first thing to go from that house would be their guns! Its just common sense, not laws and rules.
  21. I think a common sense approach may just be the answer TBH. Car in sight in the car park, gun locked in the boot, ammunition hidden somewhere in the back on the seats or under them or even hidden by say a coat. Take whatever is practical with you like a bolt from a rifle or the forend from a shotgun. I would never even consider taking one into a McDonalds or any other restaurant other than my local country pub which we use before we go shooting anyway.
  22. I'd clarify just to be on the safe side... Only thing i'd say is if you have a .22 WMR then you won't find a great deal of use for a .17HMR plus any "magnum" rimfire round is going to be noisy compared to a moderated .22LR with a mod.
  23. I'm quite amazed that off all the hundreds of millions of centrefire rifles in America, this girl is killed by someone using a muzzle loader. Maybe even black powder. I seem to recall that Mythbusters did a test on one of the salt flats where they fired shots into the air and looked for the holes in the ground and measured the depth into the ground.
  24. I've always known Deer to be a separate entry on an FAC from quite a few different areas. I'd prefer to be safe than sorry
  25. The .243 is a very popular Fox only calibre as well as both Deer and Fox. If you had Deer on there before then send it back and ask for it to be added. Once they've given you the condition, they can't suddenly take it off you for no reason.
