no point using ferrets without nets as it is unlikely to be possible to hit many if any bolting rabbit with an air rifle. they would come bak though eventually after the ferrets have been gone a while and the smell has subsided. would be best to just use nets once the season starts again. dog walkers may be a reason you have jumpy rabbits especially if dogs are often off lead. atb i know i have no chance of hitting them with an air rifle. just forget that idea yes you have. Just don't rush things. With patience and open eyes and mind you will get there and when you have th

Normally yes. the lamps will often disoriaentate them for just long enough to get a crafty shot off, but depends whether they are often lamped and have figured out bright lamps at night mean bad news for them. would suggest lamping as a different approach just to try and see how they are react. Also if possible (landowner allows it) a vehicle day or night can also sometimes help especially if they are used to seeing people on foot as a threat (dog walkers) good luck with it

there was a thread on here about it the other day http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...1&hl=bolted I seems like when people have seen it themselves though it has been accidental ie not meaning to put ferrets donw a fox hole. can't imagine the outcome would be too favourable. and many instances would likely just resut in dead, crippled / ferret,

Last i was told the value of land had dropped a little but much less relatively compared to the prices of house. normally 3 to 7K per acre as a guide with the exception being for bits of land like pony paddocks. About a year ago land especially arable was doing pretty good on the back of high cereal prices etc.. (I have not looked too much since credit crunch mind. I would have thought 5-6million may be on the shy side even including credit crunch. Here is a 950acre country estate near ish to me on at 10 mill (admittidly this includes some fairly cool properties as well which will have p

agree'd on that one.. 'get into the place', hit and grabs work some days but not usualy without a good rest inbetween. some times it's better to be focuses 'else where' as though you werent even looking and well engrossed in what your doing.. weird but it changes as it goes lol... (best one is 'not there'..strange state and coment but after a time you'll see what i mean). another is the timing, like above, your ahead of yourself so theyre one step ahead of you, similer to over shooting your sto mark at the roundabout, your nose is well out..your to far infront to stop here and not ahead in th

good on yu for going to those lengths to find owners, not sure i would have done the same especially if i knew that no-one in the area has any. I would have probably put it down to someone having heard you had ferrets and dumped him near by so he would be taken in

Here is something i have just found on youtube. Most people dobn't do it at arms length mind you. Just take rabbits legs in left hand and head in right hand and stretch its neck and pull head back as stretching across right thigh. hope this helps http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErmiaawHVAI also maybe practice on one that has been shot properly first time round to avoid causing a live one any distress while learning. you can hear when you get it right

Problem is that the public perseption of hunting with dogs is that of the horse mounted fox hunts and its that the media has focused on most. with them having focused on this specific aspect of hunting they have managed to scrape together a few more 'anti' votes by suggesting that its only posh people that hunt in this way. (basically they made it a class issue as well as a working with dogs issue which helped push the legislation through) All we can do is hope that it is repealed in some way, maybe the tories if thye get in. but unfortunataly i doubt it. I certainly will never vote labou -

In my experience your right. old dog new tricks and all that. what i have done in the past is as youv'e said handle the ferrt with the dog there and bollock/encourage accordingly if the pup gets too involved. you won't have any probs i shouldn't think as the dog will be growing up with them there

As some of the other posts have said the pointign is something that they tend to do instinctively, they are used fairly commonly in france as general rough shooting/pointing/retrieving dogs, not seen one used on boar before though. They used to be difficult (last time i tried) to get hold of in the norht of uk and fairly dificult even down south. but i suppose since the intro of the mutt passport may be easier to get hold of over here.

Ageed, farmers just want rid or massivley reduced numbers of rabbits. I don't ferret this time of year as the easy to kill rabbit young cause a lot of digging, which is a pain. This time of year i stick to shooting. Regards loads of rabbits bounding around in land the year before i got one of my main permissions the farmer had got sick of the numbers april/may time so had got hold of some mixy infected rabbits from another bit of land he owns, taken them back to his farm and shoved them down various holes. the entire area had then got mixy. If I were to let the rabbits build up to the s

Brimmer its not over yet although it might take til next season to get a good result. As to outrunning the ferret, the holes are usually two holers with a central chamber, we did see prairie dogs utilizing kangaroo rat dens as well. I think if they were running around I would have heard something underground and all was quiet, I just dont know what was going on down there. They were definetly home as we saw them go down the holes as we approached. Even had one who stuck his head out to watch us ten minutes after we had two ferrets down his hole. Stealthy, the ferrets are on dry food I have

Hi mate, i've found that most ferrets vary ferret by ferret regardless of type. generally best hunting ones for me have been the little lively and curious ones irrespective of markings Cheers

Hi Mate, not sure about the ipod bit but the ballistics calculators i have seen in the past have included air rifles calls .177 and .22 and even .25 and .20 they are not to be totally relied on mind as all pellets, barrals adn barral conditions are slightly different, but is good for showing where pellets should roughly be going. Have used the Hawke optics one in the past and it appears to be OK. try http://www.hawkeoptics.com adn register they will send you a link to download it. the software is supposed to be specific to hawke scopes but it does the job anyway atb

I was told the same many years ago mind. and in europe it is legal providing no tanks. but does anybody know for certain?
-
I was under the impression that it is illegal in the UK. Used to do it years ago in france when i lived out there adn where it is legal (providing your not using full scuba gear adn only mask, snorkel and flippers). I seem to remember at the time asking if i would be able to continue doing it when back to the UK and getting a very clear no. This was however a long time ago so things may have changed however i doubt it. You also never see any guns in any of the dive/fishing shops (that i have seen) near the coasts so would assume that it is illeagal. Hope this helps L
