Do you have experience with sawn off shotguns?
-
I am sorry to say but nearly every heart & lung shot with me runs on it may only be two yards or can be as far as fifty, I don't think you need to be sorry! Heard a couple of keepers talking about some Sika they had shot and both had run. They found them, one on top of the other. To quote them: "If you shoot a deer in the heart/lung and it goes straight down, you are using the wrong rifle or bullet"

Someone told a friend of mine to hang them by the tail feathers until the body drops to the floor. He mis-heard them and hung them by the neck until the tail feathers fell to the floor. Not a good idea!

Am I correct in suspecting that you have a certain shot in mind,ie some rabbits in a place that is difficult to approach? That's what it sounds like.

Unless you have money to spend on having the stock fitted to suit you, go for the one that fits you best. Shorter barrels will mount and swing faster but longer barrels seem to be more 'pointable'. Because of the weight, longer barrels may shoot low(barrel heavy). Keep your forearm as straight as possible to counteract the weight. O/U guns seem to handle 'lighter' than SxS guns of the same weight. A full choke barrel throws a full choke pattern and a half choke barrel throws a half choke pattern no matter their length. My 3inch magnum has 25.5 inch barrels proofed for 1&7/8 ozs of lead.

Just after dawn when pheasants are coming off their roost, is a good time to ambush charlie, especially just after the keeper has fed and gone to the next drive. All this tearing about at night with lights shining everywhere just upsets everything, especially neighbours and the local feds. Dawn and dusk, after good reconnaissance, can be very productive. 23 in a month is my best daylight score.

Is this usual for different rounds?

Is it a new gun or barrel? -
No traditional game dealer will want a game bird with a broken neck. The blood needs to be retained in the flesh to get the best flavour after hanging. The biggest rollicking I had on my first day beating was for stretching a pheasant's neck. Having spend many years driving the game cart, I agree with those that condemn neck wringing because the heads usually come off with a bit of bouncing about.

Woodcock Scent Dfficulty
rjimmer replied to welshboy454's topic in Driven, Walked Up, Rough Shooting
I've heard a few people say that dogs don't like picking up Woodcock but none of mine have ever shown it. -
He said his local vet had administered the jab!

Err.... so in effect it doesn't hit as hard, but maybe as fast. Good tool no doubt though. Each pellet might! Not as many of them, though.

On the back of the old gun licenses, there used to be notes on how to obtain clean kills. It recommended ranges of 35 yrds for a 12 bore and 15 yrds for a .410. BUT, what did they know about it?

So What Have You Got Your Eye On For Xmas?
rjimmer replied to dave1372's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Get one that's suited to our wet weather as opposed the one that's made for just COLD climates. One well-known US/Canadian jacket is warm as toast but, I'm told, does not have a drip strip inside the bottom, so the water just runs down the outside and wicks up the inside. -
About 4 hrs MAX! They soon start to go green in our mild climate.

Why did the people in the chopper need to wear camo clothing?

I bought my BSA Supersport 5 in 1968 so not much point in talking about that. My only input is to say that a mate bought a BRNO at the same time. At the time I wished I had bought one. Now, 40 years later he tells me that it used to jam! I heard a keeper raving about the accuracy of his 10/22 last week. A previous keeper friend bought an Anschutz and liked that. My BSA is still going, with it's Parker Hale moderator on it's, wait for it, 24 inch barrel. Not used more than a hundred HVs through it. Nearly all Eley Smokeless/Subsonic through it. BRNO = CZ I believe.

Spot on!

Too many variables to say. At mv of 3000fps, 32 yrds might be more appropriate for 55grns. 38 yrds might be OK for 40 grn bullets going a bit faster. Take the bolt out and fix the rifle in something steady. Look through the barrel and set the scope to the same point that you see through the barrel. Or aim the barrel at something vertical and don't worry about the height of what you see through the barrel. Doing this will save you a lot of time if you don't have access to one of those fancy boresighters. The first shot should be within an inch or 2 of allignment at 100 yrd, well it usuall

rfd?? regional firearms department??? thats my best guess cheers anyone else know if this is the official method and if this doesnt get the current owner in shit for owning an unregistered firearm RFD's can take any firearm without asking the donator's ID. It should be then checked by the police to see if it has been used in any crime or has been stolen. Once cleared as 'clean' the RFD can sell it/transfer it to anyone with a SGC.

The same way that mice, now giant mice, are now being blamed for eating albatross chicks alive, on the island (in the South Atlantic, I think) where their main nesting place is. I'm sure there would be plenty of voluteers to cull red deer in Scotland from certain townie areas. Not sure the same people would go back for a second go! Sounds like it's hard graft to do it the proper/traditional way, and the keepers would probably be more affective than the clients they would have to accompany.

is that PUNCTUATION . Perzactly!
-
I think you should read it again. I read it as needing to be a BASC member to get advice from BASC. I know a lot of people ignore puntuation when posting on the www, but not in this case. Perhaps a new paragraph would have made things more clear.

Hevi-shot is more dense than lead so the volume for the same weight load will be less than that for lead, therefore choke is not a problem. Hevi-shot is said to throw a tighter pattern than lead so a more open choke might be more appropriate. I am not sure if the tighter patterns are because of the higher density or because the shot, due to it's hardness, has to be enclosed in full-length cup wads. If it is due to density, then the idea from some years back that cube-shaped shot gave a more open pattern for skeet shooting goes out the window, because hevi-shot is all shapes. Chokes for

From another forum. I bought a used 452 Trainer at a gun show from a dealer about 6 months ago. I paid $275 and don't regret it. It too looked hardly used and the trigger has smoothed out after 500 Winchester Dynapoints - its favorite; even over CCI MMags. The beech wood on mine does have the checkering. The year of manufacture (2 digit) is stamped on the barrel - very tiny. It is a quality gun with the best iron sights of any that I own.
