  1. A little tale will serve to back up the NO SHOOTING AT EYES rule .Years ago ,maybe 20 or so ,i was on the back of a subaru lamping foxes with a head keeper and a beat keeper like myself .I had the estate .222 and my mate was lamping with the head driving .We'd had a brace already and shot dozens more on other nights so those doing the lamping/shooting knew what they were at but on this night, the head keeper had to have his say .We drove into a field on the boundary and a set of eyes were seen on top of a dry stone wall ,at roughly 200 yads .I looked through the scope ,something which i still
  2. Not being funny mate ,but youve got to have some population of munties to create a browse line of any sort .We,here in Wiltshire have the 3rd highest density in the country but no browse line .The 'gale is on the decrease due to other more sinister factors than muntjac One being the increase in sparrowhawks .
  3. The best thing to do mate is to spend a bit of time at the pen ,sit down and watch your birds .Vent pecking is a real killer but not necessarily through overcrowding .I would say you have the beginnings of a weather related disesase and the vent pecking is only the symtom mate .Poor birds that huddle and dont move much are always a target for stronger birds .Get some medication of the 'E' type into them as a precaution .Any chance of a pic of the whole intestine of one of those dead birds mate .PM if you prefer .
  4. Invited down to Martins patch last Thursday evening for a stalk and i took along the buttalo call .We were to stalk the same farm as we shot a few pigeons on a while back .Started the evening stalking along a hedge above a lane which divides the farm in two .Nothing in this field but as we crossed a gap ,looking down over the valley ,we could see a doe zig-zagging through a barley field and then a buck came into view ,following her every move .We both agreed he was a cullbuck so a stalk was planned .The shot wasnt practical from here so Martin chose a route that would take us somewhere near th
  5. All fallow mate ,part of a herd of 450 estimated.
  6. Occasionally one for the freezer mate but most to the game dealer .If you find it a bit like killing for killings sake ,we have an abundance of roe here in Wiltshire that needs culling on a regular basis and im the man for the job .
  7. Good to see some of my tutoring rubbed off mate .lol.Did that buck have 'FD' on his forehead though .lol.Never mind ,time spent fishing with the boy was time well spent .102 rudd between us and 7 carp to 6 lbs .
  8. Judging by whats on the roads morning ,i thought the cull had already started .
  9. Decided on a look around some ground i hardly ever visit now but the choice was worth it as it happened .The farmer was watching the last few swaths of barley disappearing under the combine and we had a chat over the gate about what was where and at what time .Local knowledge is sometimes the key to a good outing and this was no exception .He mentioned a couple of bucks seen in a particular field and urged me to get one or both as the neighbour has recently put up a high seat on the boundary .He also said about a litter of cubs that outstayed their welcome by chasing his chickens .He did add t
  10. You must have had that rifle in the vice Martin and straightened the fecker out ,lol.Hope your saving a few for my .222 as shes partial to a diet of fox .
  11. Are there any flashing disco lights on this one as my terrier does enjoy a jig whilst working .
  12. The thread on the BDS got me thinking .Last year ,i was part of a deer cull on our local estate .This was overseen by the' deer initiative '.They were surprised that none of us had heard of them and gave out booklets on their aims .They were well organised and brought along a team of tracker dogs for wounded deer which although not needed was ,i thought very responsible .They were 6 strong in all and all joined in the gralloch even though they had a long jorney home to Devon. There was a talk on safety by one of them and no hard sell ,which made a change .If this is the future for a deer mana
  13. As David says mate ,the rotary can have an adverse affect on birds even when set at the head of a pattern .I start a session with it not turning and rely on the birds bouncing to draw in others .I keep meaning to extend the lead to it and fit a switch as they definately draw birds passing high over head but the gearing with a fully charged battery is too fast and it always works better when the battery is wearing down .Dont over use the magnet as birds soon suss it out and that is then another ploy gone .Another thing ive noticed mate is not to mix decoys with the real thing in a pattern as th
  14. Ah but -the sweat in my eyes was a major factor mate and those rabbits were on the 200 yd mark ,lol .Practice mate and then some more .Next time i will shoot, and we will see if old dropper still has it in him or not .Just good to be out mate .
  15. Good head on her Foxdropper, is she Nuttall bred? For an 8 1/2 year old bitch she don't show the signs of a well served FOX bitch..obviouslly a bayer eh?...good luck with whelping her next year..... Bayed when she was younger ,then went through a holding season or two but recently kills all she goes to .Because of this ,she hasnt seen as much as i would like her to as i hate digging to a dead fox .A scared up face only serves to say " yes ive seen something "and shouldnt be the final word . Great thread this ,some excellent head studies and proof enough that the working terrier has a
  16. Ive only seen a couple of yearlings chasing yet .I am on the trail of a large buck at the moment but as they are want to do ,it is doing my head in as ive only had a fleeting glimpse since i saw it propper .Will have to get the buttalo out soon.Good luck to all this rut .
  17. A bit of the same thing the other evening myself .Stalking along a hedgerow between 2 fields of corn and i heard a deer run off on the other side .Got to a gap in the hedge and saw a buck out in the corn with direct eyeball on me .A doe was to his right and a third caght my eye as an ear flickered just yards away under a tree .It was a kid and as id not studied one this close i decided to do just that .It got up as the doe stamped her feet and i could see it was on 3 legs with a lifted front .A real cose look with the bins revealed a normal sized leg with no swelling and no breaks so i decided
