  1. Sitting in a high seat the other day in a wood ,the bird life went deathly quiet and a spar came through very fast and low through thick cover .Got to admire them .
  2. Why not? .Owls are bomb proof as long as you feed them regular .Had many an owl so no snide remarks .To start with a hawk or falcon, without any knowledge would be wrong so in my book the lad has done right .You can learn a lot from an owl without putting yourself or the bird in danger . Owls respond quickly to a cut down in food unlike a stubborn hawk that will nearly die rather than feed off the fist .Just my first hand experience ,take it or leave it .I used to fly a little owl at lob worms so i must of done something right .lol.
  3. Only time i went out with a harris ,he fed up on mice that he saw before he got to any rabbits lamped so yes thier eyes are better than ours .
  4. Out with the dogs today and saw a merlin tail chasing a lark .Brilliant .The lark tried to maintain the higher ground but the falcon ,just like a spitfire , kept back summersaulted to get even higher .The merlin folded for a swoop but the lark evaded last minute with a what looked like a mid air stall .Breathtaking really .The conclusion i never got to see as they went over the horizon .Very fast predator against a worthy ,thinking prey .No pics unfortunately .
  5. Perspective lads ,perspective .Fresh foxes in artificials ,short drains will often bolt before dog has made contact so no achievement for the dog just mild work.We have had them out many a time with drain rods . .Foxes put in drains however can be the real devil incarnate especilly for a killing dog that cant get purchase on the sides to press home .A good strong dog will work, push his fox to the end where it can be dealt with. However, credit to the lads for using the border ,plummers for fox work when its very easy to use a tried and tested black strain .
  6. Been asked this a few times too, but there it is on the right ! Apparently they are amour piercing rounds but not confirmed

  8. As thread says ,ive been given 50 f.m.j's in 243 and im dubious as to whether they will go through my tikka t3 as they appear to be brass coated?Curious really . Obviously military so no questions as to origin please. What twist are military rifles in 243 .Anyone? .

  12. Called in to see a farmer yesterday on the way home and asked about the deer situation.Loads about so today i tried the place and he wasnt wrong .Walked up a long trck and into his top fields where they are usually to be found .Through the last gateway on the lane ,i could see and pair of does ,mature and a follower .Only about 50 yards off so on sticks a bit sharpish and dropped the old girl .The follower ran into the field a bit and looked back like they do and she joined the other in the bag .Onwards and started seeing more and more deer. The second pair to end up in the bag were sat
  13. That pic is very typical of Wiltshire mate .Very flat ,small fields and overgrown hedges ,perfect roe habitat .
  14. Ive been storing a few deer in the lockup over night recently just to chill them down before they go to the dealer and i noticed the signs of a rat coming under the door .You know ,the shiney mark on the concrete ,footprints and a tail drag in a bit of spilt blood .Well today he met his match in the form of a well placed fen .No need to cover here as its in doors so i placed it beneath one of the hanging deer .Went to get a bite to eat and came back to fetch the kit for tomorrows stalk and found a decent sized rodent perfectly killed in the fen ,less than 20 minutes since setting .This rat tr
  15. Abso-firkin-lutely!!!" The large estates will keep the prices high, they care little about the deer welfare and more about the pound notes.....Shame. Its the hind cull that needs to be cheap as chips .The stags matter not in the scheme of things .........................Shame.
  16. Good going there mate .Those fallow dont go too far when bumped do they !
  17. Last Sunday afternoon ,i got to sit in a high seat by kind invitation from a chap i hardly know .He rents some stalking in a wood near me and i chanced upon him on the quad a while back ,got talking and true to his word the invite came Sunday morning .By 2pm i was in the seat he had chosen for me ,a 't'junction of two rides with a very good veiw up and to both sides .He went and sat on a bank overlooking a clear fell area but despite seeing deer he blanked .I on the other hand got lucky and grassed this doe which lingered too long crossing a ride .Darkness came early in the wood so time to lea

  19. A 3" magnum cartridge in .410 will hit as hard as a 12 at the same ranges but with less shot .Underestimated if you ask me .
  20. Spent a day out with hounds yesterday and cracking it was in the company of good lads ,good dogs .Cold marked in a place shortly after leaving the meet and we dug a dog fox at 1.8 in brash .A good dig to warm us up .Fox was let to run as he was a healthy chap despite a local outbreak of mange .Dog was a wheeler bitch i think of very good stamp .
  21. Had a call Friday from a chicken farmer to say that he'd been losing a few of the free range birds in the afternoon and could i have a look .Im not working at the moment [bloody recession] so got to the ground at 2.30 pm .Pulled up near the shed that been hit the most and walked to a spot where i had the widest view point .Back to the hedge,on sticks, and waited .Through the bins i could see a fox up the other end of the field around another shed but it went out of view due to the lie off the land.Time for a squeak and didnt have to wait long before charlie came up over the rise at a fair trot
  22. The luck held out yet again mate .Cracking trip there ,shame about the reds though .
