A slightly confusing first post, you seem to be a young man in a hurry to have everything. One spaniel "being trained up", who by? Are you involved in this training, and where does the one "great at flushing", get to flush if you are not involved with shooting yet?You have to know what you need to train gun and beating dogs for. To take your last point first, as it's most important, nailing the safety aspect would be taught to novices at a clay club anyway, so get yourself back there, and learn it. Also, do not think of shooting at live quarry (when you have some permission land) until you ca

Best to check with the man you have to please (your FEO). I would say your idea is fine. Ideally, out of sight in a built-in wardrobe is probably best, but out of sight under a bed has got to be a good alternative. My mates modern house is mostly dry lined walls inside, so his FEO was agreeable to screwing his box flat to the roof joists in the loft. Although it's held down with monster screws, it's not fixed to any wall/bricks etc. You do need a loft ladder to get to see the box though. Most FEO's are not too inflexible with the rules.

how do you break down a gun to fit in them though?i will i still need to talk to the farmer to confirm whether he will sign a sgc in the permission section Usually, with a side by, or over under, you unclip the fore end wood, swing out the barrels. Then refit the wood to the barrels, and put the stock and barrels into the "break down" box in two pieces. As deker says, you may have trouble with a cable. Check with your FEO before purchasing one. I always recommend anyone starting out, to phone their local gun shop and/or clay ground with a gun shop attached. They often have 2nd hand bo

A very enjoyable read. Can't make out what is flying in the 2nd picture though. Is it Elvis' hair piece??

This week, I have walked several sections of the Trent and Mersey canal. The sides of the towpaths and waterside pub gardens are full of mole hills. Definitely a job for moletrapper and co.

talking about your gunsmith altering the gun to suit you. my grandpa used to shoot right handed but buggered his right shoulder a few years back. he now shoots right eye left shoulder with his gun specially altered. try and work that one out ;) I used to know an old farmer up in Lancashire,(sadly no longer with us) and he had a similar problem to your grandad. He had a thing called a "cross hand" or "cross eye"stock fitted to his favourite shotgun. It it the only one I have seen and handled, but the stock was almost S shaped. So you mounted it to your right eye as normal, and the b

They all feel a little different, you are looking at the better end of the "sensible money" guns. All the Brownings, Miroku's and Beretta's are built to a similar standard, so that without alteration, "Mr Average" can pick one up and shoot reasonably well. A gunsmith can adjust any of them to custom fit it to yourself if required. A mate I shoot with has a MK70 which has been adjusted for him. We are similar built, stocky and short/average height (ok, a pair of fat b******s) and this gun fits me perfectly, better than any I have ever shot. If possible, you should try a few different ones at a

I know that some magazines try to get 13 issues out in 12 months, and make more money I suppose. I was very surprised though when my mate asked his wife to pick up a Sporting Gun at the weekend. He likes the year planner they include in January. So on the 4th of January, she comes home with the February one? Do they have to be so far in front?

I love the scent of honeysuckle on a warm summer evening. (Remember those, we had a couple last year?) The aniseed smell from sweet cicily when you scrunch the leaves in your hand Cut grass. The smell of bacon cooking, as you get back from a early dog walk, on a beach maybe, when on holiday. Puppies!!

Nice to have a wife who shares your hobbies. Mine doesn't beat, but picks up with the dogs. I wonder if we are related?

Sorry MK, I don't need one, but £6 plus post is very reasonable. Should sell ok. -
I am a CPSA clubman member. They cover me for any kind of shooting. Two years subs is about £50 or so. Check the website for details. Works for me.

If you want more rifle articles, have you tried "Sporting Rifle"? Plenty in there.

The one I buy most is Shooting Times, then probably Sporting Gun. I don't subscribe to any nowadays, as despite their best efforts, magazines can get a bit "same as last month", so just buy when an article catches my eye.

Had a lovely walk round my permission yesterday. Never saw a rabbit, told myself I must be doing a good job!! Watched a few pheasants scratching about, nearly jumped out of my skin when a hen took off right in front, must have nearly walked on it!! Nearly back at the Jeep, more or less given up, then saw a woodcock sheltering in some brush. By the little pond, I spotted a kingfisher coming from the water. I was right in the open then, so just stood still and used my 'scope to watch it. He dived again and came up with nothing. Watched a little longer and he dived and came up with a beak full

I have about a 250 yard railway embankment, with a signalbox on it along one edge of my permission. The land has been passed as ok for rimfires by the FEO. If you treat it like a road in daytime, and don't shoot towards it, all should be ok. The last train is around 22:30, the signalman locks up and departs then. After that time, the embankment makes a superb backstop. Local conditions will control how you cope with it, if you have all night train operation, then it will always be a "no go" area I guess.

Nope! Don't see why it should. He just looks like a young lad about to go on a shoot, and he has taken the trouble to dress in suitable clothing. Good luck to him, hope he has a good day out. One thing he might be advised to buy, is a gunsafe flag for the auto. These are not too common on game shoots, and some folk get a bit "twitchy" around them.

Very (n)ice shots there hyperion! I notice you have it like here, no frost on the grass as it's too dry now, but frozen troughs and bird baths etc.

Well put Kay. There is still RSPCA staff who work largely in the background, they are interested only in real world animal welfare. They go quietly about their work rescuing animals from bad situations, and doing a good job. Sadly, the upper echelons are totally infiltrated by political type extremists who are only interested in spoiling people's legal sports. If only the "dear old ladies" who leave huge bequests to the RSPCA, could see what the money gets wasted on, I am sure a large part of their funding would dry up. I haven't given a penny since (about 10 years ago) they allegedly spent £

Hello Dave, welcome to the forum. Ask as many questions as you like, but make sure they are in the right section. There are some very knowledgeable people on here, and you can find out all sorts. If you post questions in the newbie introduction section, they will often get missed.

Very impressive, monster engines and huge tyres will get you anywhere it seems. The jeep that recovered itself after being right on it's side was particularly capable!!

Fear not mate, it should be fine. I have two Simmons scopes, not the best of course but fine for me.

If a pair of barrels is cropped to 24", their is no choke to tighten, as the bit in the gunsmith's bin has the chokes. The only way really, is to have it machined out and threaded to accept multi-chokes. This work along with re proofing will not be cheap. I recall A J "Smoker" Smith had just such a gun for the Starshot television programmes, in the eighties (was it??) . A Winchester if I remember correctly. Do tell us what you need this for.

Hello John and welcome to the site. You are credited with 21 posts, so they must be somewhere? You need to post in the correct section of course, shotgun items for instance do not go in general talk. You should see your post instantly if replying to a existing thread. A new post will come straight up in the section you put it, and even if moved by the mods, the header will remain with a "moved" sign by it. Also, remember this is a very active site, a post you put up today, could easily be three pages back tomorrow! Try a search using key words and see if that helps you find the posts. PS
