Nice to see you have your finger on the political 'pulse'. Oaten in a LIBERAL!! I dont really care who people vote for, as long as they make the effort to vote. No-one has the right to comment on the current political situation unless they voted last time round (if they were eligible). Voting should be compulsory IMHO.

A really cheap alternative is to cut the top third off a 2 litre pop bottle, and invert that into the main section. Any sweet stuff will do as bait, and they are very effective, especially for wasps.

Its just a thought, but most modern mobile phones are capable of sound recording aren't they? Why not record the abuse and then report them. The recording will not be able to be used in court, but it will demonstrate to a senior police officer that you have been the subject of 'threatening behaviour'. I would complain about the officers concerned as well. There are laws in this country which prevent the unlawful interference with legal activities....

Mole Traps, Probes and markers
Matt replied to Axholme Ferreter's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Quite right! The Duffus type trap is still the favourite trap in the UK, although its not one I've ever really got on well with. Each to his/her own, if it works for you then so be it. -
Mole Traps, Probes and markers
Matt replied to Axholme Ferreter's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Dont discount the Fenn scissor type. They are reasonably priced, and are excellent in shallow runs. They also live forever........ Talpex are about the best all round trap these days IMHO - they also seem to be becoming the choice of professionals. On the subject of probes - I use the dibber provided by Certis (formally Luxan) which they do supply seperately to the gas applicator. The bar is just the right length with a 'bullet' shaped end, and the T piece is the ideal size to flatten the run once you've opened it up. -
theres a right to roam law in scotland, so no.. I don't know, it might be tresspassing, as you don't have the right to roam in scotland if you're illegally in pursuit of game, so maybe this comes under it. Criminal damage maybe, so he probably was trespassing. I think that any wild bird which is confined, (ie in a cage) is legally classified as 'livestock'. This also applies to pheasants in a release pen. There is also an offence of 'interfering with a legal activity'. In a recent case against some sabs, they claimed that the activity was not legal as there was no H&S p

I've just fished this out of the shed. It is very similar to the Youngs, but has no label. I'm not sure if its a copy, or if the label has somehow become detatched. Even the twists on the wire are the same as the Young pictured by Ditch. Sorry about the picture quality - I'm no David Bailey......

I'm with Rolfe on this one. I have a few of the Fenn Cages, and they are fantastic quality. As stated in another thread, although Fenn no longer make em, I know that Pat down at Bridport Nets has a few Canadian versions which look just as good.

There is a new(ish) forum kicking off all about pest control. It's not intended to be competition for this site, but members here are welcome to join up. There is a different philosophy over there; not like anything I've seen elsewhere - the basic theory is that the more you post, the more of the site you get access to. I'd be interested in some opinions - just follow the link in my signiture..............

What I know about the Ministry Wildlife Units and FMD is based on my experiences NOT from reading crap. Some of the wildlife unit members made good money - but only by working hard. I worked 122 hours in one week doing the most difficult work wiping out farms; so please don't try telling me you know more about what happened than I do. You are right that some contractors made huge sums of money - but that was contractors NOT ministry employees. I suggest you think before you post.

but the correct way aint told to their own guys ditch. testing for tb have gone on for years near me,and to be honest the trappers aint a clue about wild life, just contractors thats all who bait a trap with a few nuts. the foot and mouth thing had the same contractors in the job then, and again nothing to do with what they knew more of the case of your son dateing the local ministry vets daughter sort of thing ? and some made silly money out of that foot and mouth, and that i do know...friends of mine who i would say are thick as shit phone me to see if i wold cut the grass in theyre garden

The problem with the Krebbs Trial was that the SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) that were enforced by the ISG (Independent Scientific Group) were too prescriptive. For example, if you had a sett in which you estimated five badgers where living, you had to set at least ten traps (two traps for every badger you expected to catch). You were also expected to keep all traps 'within a reasonable distance' of the sett you were trapping. All that means that you took a load of quality trappers (OK, and a few dickheads) and insisted that they used no common sense whatsoever and stuck to a ru

You can be sure of one thing; if badgers are to be culled in the UK, snares or gassing will not be the chosen methods. My money would be on cage trapping, or possibly lamping with centrefire 22 rifles. Gassing will never be used in the UK after that notorious video footage was shown to the parliamentry sub commitee. Cage trapping (with dispatch using .22 pistol) is proven to be the most humane method (in government eyes). The 64 million dollar question is .......... Who will do the killing? The government had a very experienced and qualified workforce who could carry out a c

he he he he he he!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only joking, I'm not really laughing, honest! Do yourself a favour, and buy a copy of JB's new book. You've got the makings of a good trap there...... Anyway, one less magpie has got to be good. Good job jobbed.

Here it is, word for word: Shooting Times, 1 May 2008 Mirrors in traps As a gamekeeper and long-term supporter and member of the NGO, I have great respect for the organisation and its aims. I was therefore surprised to read in Sporting Answers (17 April) the vice-chairman Brian Mitchell's suggestion of using mirrors in Larsen traps. Under the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act, the use of a mirror in a Larsen trap is an offence. I would have thought most keepers, expecially head keepers, would be aware of the rules. To catch your first magpie without using a decoy, carry o

OK, I'm not sure on this one either..... Someone asked the question in ST a few weeks ago, it went something like this: "What is the easiest way to catch your first magpie for a larsen trap?" The answer, provided by an old friend of mine (Brian Mitchell) was something like the following; " Try putting a mirror in your larsen trap and you'll soon have one" Then, the following week, some smart arse writes into ST to say that it is bad advice as the W&C act clearly states, etc, etc..... ST duly publish a retraction and apologise stating that said smart arse is, actually

The use of a mirror in a larsen trap would be illegal under the W&C Act 1981, as shown recently in the Shooting Times when an old friend of mine advised it wrongly.

USING MOLE TRAPS FOR CATCHING RATS
Matt replied to TITCHY69's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
As i understand it the law states: Under section 8 pests act 1954 it is an offence, in respect of any animal, to use or permit the use of: 1. Unapproved spring traps. 2. Approved trap in unapproved circumstances. The prohibition in section 8 does NOT apply to break back traps designed and used to catch small ground vermin (e.g. rats and mice) or the type commonly used for taking moles in their runs as these are made an exception under the Small Ground Vermin Trap Order 1958. Rolfe. You beat me to it Rolfe! The STAO does not apply in this case, although the Duffus trap is -
Best place to buy cage traps
Matt replied to aktonvermincontrol's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Pat down at Bridport Nets has some good quality Canadian cages which are very similar to the old Fenn mink cages. Give him a bell, and tell him Matt recommended you and you may get a good deal............ -
I agree. There are lots of 'displaced' badgers about at this time of year, and saw one at about 10am yesterday............
