And there was a lad up your way who had "Johns Rocket" and my old mate "Big Sixer" who had "Tiger Bay" ! Two tremendous Scratch Dogs ! Cheers.
  2. Alan was just a youngin when I moved to Ashington from Bedlington, he had lurchers then..It might have been his dad Dicky that had whippets, or even his granddad.. chartpolski did you ever run whippets at Newsham..my dad ran them in the early 50`s, Bedlington, Netherton and Ashington on Green Lane Bill, Alan had a dog called Buechephalus, a non ped whippet, and a very handy one it was !! I ran at North Seaton, Ashington, Bedlington, but my main tracks were Coxslodge and Wallsend Rising Sun, where I was Handicapper ! I also helped start Killingworth track, but in thehayday of Whippe

  4. Joe, you'll see by my original post, that I wasn't advocating bringing in new blood....simply asking IF it would be worth it. My own opinion is NO, it isn't worth it, as we have, as you say, pleanty of good blood right here, but theres some on here who seem to think the dogs "over the pond" are some sort of mystical beast, that we can't equal ! I think that if people here put more thought into what they are breeding, and only used good stock, there wouldn't be so mich dross about. Cheers. C P, I'm not up with the game anymore, so you can correct me if I am wrong, but it's my understand
  5. It's Xmas Eves Eve and I'm enjoying a chilled glass of chardonay myself !! LOL !! All the best to you and your family mate ! Cheers.
  6. Well, having hunted and travelled a bit all say is based on what I reckon to be the case. Yes we were unfortunate in the UK in the past, when longdogs were banned and very heavy penalties were inplace for deer poachers. At the time we were, and had been for centuries using longdogs of various strains to catch our native quarry. They came in differing sizes and with rough and smooth coats. And more than likely with stamina to spare and all we could possibly want for our land, which back then included wolves as a common quarry. We then saw our longdogs slip into the hands of the aristocracy
  7. I'm sure Alan learnt his trade with Racing Whippets, he sure knew how to get a dog ready !! The good old days !!! Cheers.

  9. I was over there last year, Andy, County Offaly, running hares with the locals. Good craic with good men!! Cheers.

  11. I know that Salukis have been imported and added greatly to the coursing stock in this country, but reading some of the posts on this, and other sites, what about other breeds/types from abroad? Would they have anything to add to our dogs ? What about the Staghounds from America ? We've all seen on here what they can do. And what about the Australian Stags and 'Roo Dogs ? Also, how about Bull Arabs and Catahoulas ? Now that quarrantine is a thing of the past, it's far easier to import a dog; would it be worth importing some of this overseas blood, or are we happy with what we have ? Cheers
  12. There are, obviously, better crosses than Whippets; but I still have fond memories of the ones I have had... and I'll probably have a Non-Ped again, before I get to old, for a bit racing and mooching ! Grand little dogs !! Cheers.
  13. FFS !! Bob, you're sounding like Whin !!! You know more about Non-Peds than most, so stay of the "Buckies" when youre talking aboot Whippets !! !!! LOL !!! Cheers, Richie.
  14. Thomas, just a genuine question...... you seem to have a say on every post on here; but do you actualy have any dogs yourself ? And are they any good ? It would be interesting to hear about you coursing dogs . Cheers.
  15. We've all been thru' the same shit, young'un !! It's part of the game ! I read your theads, and it's obvious you do a bit, so, good luck, young 'un !! Keep it up !! Cheers.
  16. Just an answer to your question, and no offence meant....but how many on here actualy have a "line" ? I'd say about 90% or more on here haven't !! I've thought for many years about my own "line", but at the end of the day, not bothered, I can get a well bred pup any time, without trying to go down the Plummer, Handcock, Burrell route ! There are lads who HAVE got their own lines, and certainly don't need to advertise them ! Cheers.
  17. K100. you're a keen young lad, and I can see you reading this ! It probably sounds like nonsense to you , but us old farts know what it means !! LOL !! You lads stick with it.. you kids are the future !! Cheers.
  18. Aye... in them days we could get a made to measure top coat, a stout pair of walking boots, a bag of monkey nuts, and change out of a farthing !! Luxury !!! Cheers.
  19. £15 per week , take home pay in the mines of Lancashire, out weekends we a greyxwhippet. i can see the look on my mothers face now, when i came home with the bunnies good days. poaching tales, you wouldnt believe em Aye; and we lived in't middle of road in cardboard box ! Hand full of cold gravel for breakfast, then down pit for shilling a day !! Luxury !! Try telling kids that today, and they won't believe you !! LOL !! Cheers.
  20. I would say poaching and putting food on the table were the same thing. We were selling rabbits for £1 apiece back in the 70's, and my take home pay from an engineering job was £53 a week, so it was good money for rabbits ! Hares and venison were usualy kept for ourselves, much like now. Don't get me wrong, we didn't HAVE to poach to eat, but it was an enjoyable sideline ! LOL ! A guy on another site once asked me why I went out to kill a hare for dinner, when Tesco's has all the food we need........ He simply didn't understand some peoples way of life ! Cheers.
  21. OK, a couple of reminisces from me ! I'm a man of, shall we say, "vintage years", and over the last couple of seasons have been going out, day and night with a far younger, fitter laddy !! He drove me to a place were I recognised and said "this place used to be red hot with keepers, years ago " ! He said"no problem, I'm on here every night and no bother "! Anyhow, It was my first night with an 8 month old pup on the lamp, and she was running her first rabbit well, when my mate said "quick, get the dog, let's go "! I said "no, shes doing well"! Next thing a 4x4 is roaring across the field towar
  22. I had a 40lb bitch, she killed them, but not easy. I also had a 75lb bitch, she killed them easy. When a 75lb Lurcher hits a 15lb fox, and means it..........there's usualy only one outcome. Cheers.
  23. I remember saying "nice Lurcher, how's it bred" to a guy in Texas, he was most upset, and told me it was a "Chartpolski", a Polish Sight Hound; hence my user name !! LOL !! Cheers.
  24. A previous poster has said he thinks the image of Lurchers has been "tarnished beyond repair". I don't agree with that. This may be the biggest hunting site on the 'net; but it's small fry in the grand scheme of things. The vast majority of "ordinary people " haven't a clue what a Lurcher is, or what it's used for ! And, it's not just ne're do wells who own Lurchers; I was priviledged to be asked to have a look at two Lurchers that were given to an Arab Sheik, by the Queen, from her Sandringham Kennels. And very nice they were ! Also, I'm sure Princess Anne owns Lurchers; no doubt thru' her Ho
