  1. To be fair this wasn't even flighting. There's a duck pond in one of the farms and they get a bit greedy going into the pens and eating the calf food. Every now and again they need thinning out and numbers had built up over the summer. They are good eating ducks though!
  2. I had an invite from a mate working on a local estate to come shoot a few ducks on opening day. We were joined by the owner and his son and had an enjoyable evening. I didnt shoot particularly well but the owners son did and accounted for the majority of the bag.
  3. Are these spot and stalk hunts or driven?
  4. I dont shoot many roe bucks on this estate now as I tend to take guests there during the summer and focus on the fallow myself. This one I shot my self as the owner had asked for some roe fillet. If I'm honest it wasn't the best shot but Willow saved the day.
  5. These have been up before but I like them. This was a 4 day backpack hunt in the ruahine mountains in New Zealands North Island. I shot my first red stag on this trip and a couple of meat animals. I absolutely loved it.
  6. I dont know if mine is a one off or if that breeding would always throw that way. Either way he has been a cracking dog from day one and is only just slowing down now at the age of 12 or 13 (can't remember exactly) He would still give his best at whatever i pointed him at now, just wouldn't be fair to ask it of him. I have 2 daughters out of him to my bushing bitch, if they turn out to be anything like as good as he has been i will be well pleased.
  7. I put my whippetxrussell over my patxspringer bitch, both grafters. Just mutt to mutt basically but think they will be useful
  8. I would be very keen on that. I will PM you
  9. My last busher was castrated. He carried his weight differently after but lost no drive. Neither did he become less of a sociopath though which was the point of the exercise. Had to rehome him in the end due to a never ending feud with one of the lurchers. I might as well have left him entire really, he would have made good lurchers put across a running dog
  10. That sounds brilliant, thank you. The hunting here is very good, plenty of game etc and I am lucky enough to have good permissions, but we lack any real wilderness in my part of the country. There is some public access land but nowhere with public hunting access like there is in many parts of the world.
  11. I was lucky enough to have a days hunting in the mountains in Ireland a few years ago, it was absolutely stunning country. We were looking for goats but blanked in the end. What species do you hunt and whereabouts are you?
  12. The looks amazing! The adventure is the important bit. You also do the canoe hunting for beaver dont you? That is also on my bucket list
  13. I've had my land for a year, got 75ish laying hens, 22 broilers who are going off this weekend to become chicken dinners and a few sheep. Bought and built a polytunnrl but not had a chance to do anything in it yet. Next spring will be more sheep and some pigs I hope
  14. I think I may have asked this before but can't hurt asking again. Does anyone know of anywhere in the UK, I thinking most likely Scotland or Ireland, that offer guided or self guided multi day back pack hunts? Its not something that really happens here i know, due to the size of the country and lack of any public hunting lands, but its very big in the states, nz and Australia. I have done a 4 day hunt in nz and loved the adventure as much as the hunting. I was planning to go back this year but covid has wrecked that plan so I am wondering if there is a viable alternative.
  15. I quite like the idea, whats the worst that could happen?
  16. I've only just seen this topic, not sure how I missed it, its brilliant! So good to have a decent write up and pictures on here. Well done!
  17. I think, perhaps, that the fact that you have the time, and freedom, to think about and form these opinions shows that its not so bad just now. In the not so distant past you'd have been so exhausted from working on someone else's land to provide for whatever family disease and / or war had left you with that you wouldn't have had the time to even think about it. Its true that the world is in no great shape now but I think its been that way for quite some time and unlikely to get much better or worse. All we can do is make the very best of what we've got and not waste our lives

    The two we kept

Pups are coming on now. Seeing a bit of unintentional action thanks to their mum. I took mine on a canoeing and camping trip over the weekend and she took to it like a pro. Couldn't quite retrieve the catapulted pigeon but had a go
  19. You're not wrong there. He was a big lad.
  20. I bred a litter of bushing pups this year but the one I kept back will be multipurpose I hope. I use my lurcher as an indicator and tracking dog and am hoping she will teach the pup what she knows. This is the first dead deer shes seen and she watched the lurcher find it for me. Hopefully the first step in becoming a handy dog.
  21. Yes. As i said, i dont like his politics. I also think that he is now a rampant self publicist who uses sensationalism to push his left wing agenda forward. That, however, doesnt detract from the book i mentioned earlier which was written long before he took his current path. Have a look you might surprise yourself
  22. I agree entirely. Have you read a book calked 'Feral' by George Monbiot? If you havent you ought to, its a real eye opener. I dont agree with sll his politics but the statistics he gives are mind boggling. Makes you reslize what we've done to the world and how fast

Annoyingly it wont let me upload any more pics. We had a walk out yesterday with Sheepchaser and his pup. Nice to see the pup again and have a catch up. The whippet has come through strong in these considering they only have a 1/4.
