  1. Ive gone for it now and got myself 6 hens! After endless soul searching and deliberation i decided upon 3 light sussex and 3 marans. They are locked up in the shed and enclosed run for now, will give it a day or two for them to settle before i let them have the rest of their area as a run. What is the usual to give them in food? ie a handful of corn/pellets per bird or what? once they have free reign of the garden they will find lots of grubs etc for themselves, but what would be the right amount for this weekend? cheers trappa ps pics WILL follow

    man killed

Its scary really mate, the stuff is lethal no exageration, yet if you own a plot of land you can buy it with no training!! I went on a course to use it and it should only be available to proffesionals imo. Like you say, some terrorist need only buy a field and get the land number and he can buy as much as he likes!!!

    man killed

I think that might be the same bloke a mate of mine knew. He told me a few weeks ago now that this lad he knew killed himself with talunex.
  4. A hushpower 410 isnt as loud as a "normal" 410 but its still too loud for a backgarden imo. As for getting a 22lr for fox dispatch, i dont know.....its like opening a can of worms of be honest.
  5. appreciate the offer though trapperman
  6. cheers sighthound. Thats not a bad idea actually! never thought of that! I was planning on getting half a dozen marans first, but at the prices quoted, decided on 4, but might get 2 marans and 4 hi-sex now!! great idea
  7. Im going to collect some hens on good friday. The lad said on the phone he had light sussex (was it light)? for a tenner each, marans for £12 each or hi sex for £6.50 I think they are a bit dear to be honest but i am prepared to pay... Pros and cons please boys, pros and cons... I only want eggs- i doubt very much i will be eating them. cheers trappa
  8. 10z is too heavy. My mate got a hundred yards longnet in 10z but the rabbits just bounced off them-useless! i bought it off him and am making purse nets with it, which is the only thing its good for.
  9. Went up to my pond yesterday and we have our first frogspawn! Not only is this our first of the year but its the first time weve had any naturally since we got the pond in. Well pleased.
  10. Cheers lads. Ive got peas, carrots, onions and some early potatoes in. Going to get some parsnips sorted for today. Im only new to it but im enjoying it more than i thought i would! (apart from the shed getting broken into the night before last). A lot of veg require manure to be put down well before planting so i doubt i will be winning the "biggest marrow competition" this year mind!
  11. Well everything was going great. i got rows of peas , carrots, onions and potatoes in which i was happy about. Went down this morning and the shed has been broken into! Ive only had it a week!! Nothing took as there was nothing in it yet but its given me a heads up as to nnot putting valuables in. I was just talking about getting a rotivator but if the little twats are breaking in i wont bother and just use the old fashioned tools.

Ive only got setanta for the UFC- cant see why they let virgin get it ?!?! Really looking forward to this series! Should be great!
  13. Thanks kay, thats food for thought!?! I thought i was doing the right thing as she is seperated from her regular fella who is trying like hell to get to her.
  14. My jill has just come on this week so i went up to my mates house who has a couple of jills, but he is lending a vasectomised hob for a while so i stuck mine in with them. How long will she need to be in before the vasectomised hob has done his job, considering there is 3-4 jills to go at? i was thinking a week or so? cheers trappa
  15. Is there anywhere on the computer i can find out if there are signal crayfish in my area. ever tried them but they look so delicious.
  16. Looks a great set-up mate! Nice and tidy, and fresh eggs on tap, what can be better. Im getting chucks in the next week or two so am looking for tips!
  17. I think i can categorically state that " in the mean time do not read any books or owt " has to be the worst advise i think i have ever read. And congratulations on flying a harris for such a long time. Your whole ethos is contradictory. The fella has come on here to READ about starting. Youve WROTE some "advice", he will READ it......do you see where i am going here? Reading books is an absolute must. Yes, your quite correct that it wont substitute hunting practicality, and getting out there in the field, but you need to know about sourcrop before it happens, you need to know about
  18. If that was round here it would last about 2 minutes before it was nicked! If youve got a gun and/or fox trapping experience , looks like an open invitation to get some permission mate! A knock on the door and an offer to eliminate the fox in return for some regular shooting looks a must!!!!!
  19. now ballo. First, Ignore what "harrishawk" says about dont read any books. You need to read as much as possible on the subject, emma fords art and practice is good for beginners, as is glasiers "falconry and hawking". You will learn loads from books, it wont substitute the real thing, but books are SO important. You need to know about sour crop, bumblefoot etc etc and you need to know about them before they happen. You also need to know the nutritional qualities of foodstuffs too. read, read, read!!! Next, get yourself a mentor. Someone you can go out with, ask questions and watch. Yo
  20. Im shocked by a lot of the "animal friendly" societies. When our lass was younger something happened to her dog (cant remember now, i will ask her later. It might have been knocked down) Anyway, the thing was knackered and in loads of pain. They took it to the nearest place which was the PDSA to be put to sleep, but they refused as her father was working! if he was on the dole they would have put it out of its misery but because he worked they refused to touch it , leaving it in agony.
  21. Im no authority on rifles but im going to have my tuppence worth anyway. I voted for .243 . A friend of mine has a 243 and 90% of his shooting is roe and foxes. He swears blind its the dogs bollox for them and having been out with him plenty i can see what he means. My 223 drops foxes with ease and i suspect it would easily drop a deer too, not that ive tried, and with that said, why take a stick to crack an egg. A 243 is the perfect round for fox and deer and legal for larger deer should the need arise.
  22. Its sounding good boys. I think allotments are the nearest many of us are going to get to owning a big feck off garden so it makes sense. Im so looking forward to giving it a go.
  23. Cheers mate. im similar, i get loads of bunnies and occasionaly something "else" so i get plenty meat. The veg will be an added bonus!!
  24. Its not so much which type is better on squirrel, but which particular bird is better. A good harris will be better than a poor footing red -get my drift?
