  1. Hmmm, without buying a tiny light of some kind it's difficult. In the absence of a light first check the gun is empty by dropping the rammer down. It will nearly disappear if empty. Next you want a good rod and jag combination with a wet with olive oil patch. With that you can feel the bore. Forget surface rust, you are looking for deep pitting. Surface rust is easily worked and won't prevent function. Pits won't but feel awful.

The Chinese pr900w ticks all those box's when it comes to off hand shooting. I was asked to clear some vermin at work today. Four shots for three, off hand. Open sights. It can't be a bad rifle and less than £200!

  15. Enfield pattern 1858/9. As a consequence of British fears, the native infantry's long arms were modified by reaming out the rifling of the Pattern 1853 as a smooth bore bullet does not require greasing. This greatly reduced the gun's effectiveness, as did replacing the variable distance rear sight to a fixed sight. This became the Pattern 1858. However, due to the new thinner walls, the barrel would bulge and bursting was not an unknown problem. Furthermore, with the bayonet fitted excessive flexing became an issue. To remedy this, new barrels were made with thicker walls. This became the
