  1. Today I applied the Phillips Blue again on the bare steel barrel and action but the result was very poor to say the least so I have just ordered the Birchwood Casey Perma Blue from Ramsbottoms which comes as a complete kit so it can now sit in the corner until that arrives and we will start again hopefully with better results this time but after seeing a number of youtube reviews, I am pretty sure it will do the job.........................................fingers crossed. Phil
  2. Yes fair point but the gun and materials are inside the cottage so no effect from the cold or damp outside or in the garage. I am putting one more coat of Tung oil on the stock Sunday or Monday and leaving it for the week to soak in before I polish the stock and that will be the stock finished all being well. Phil
  3. I did try to patch up the metalwork with the Phillips but it is designed for dipping and the results were useless however I have now stripped all the colour off, although still needing a little more cleaning the surface with wire wool then during the weekend I will attempt to re-apply the Phillips manually and if I am not happy with that, I will be either buying a Birchwood Casey Perma Blue full kit or the metalwork will be spray painted. I will put up some photos when I start the process. Phil
  4. I love that stock Jimmy, it would certainly be a cracker if you put your renovation skills into force. Good to talk to you today mate. Phil
  5. I am going to get the Birchwood casey Perma Blue kit and start again Jimmy but I will leave it for a few days mate, just work on the stock for now.
  6. Just been doing some research on youtube for cold bluing and found a Perma Blue by Birtchwood Casey from the USA which looks really good and is available from Ramsbottoms and come in a complete kit for £21 so I think I am going to order one unless you guys tell me it is not so good. Just a moment... WWW.JSRAMSBOTTOM.COM Please do let me know if any of you have tried this also I want some of the maroon coloured 3M Scotch pads if anyone knows where to get them. The American guys seem to use this stuff to polish the barrels right down to bare metal without
  7. Totally exasperated ! ! ! ! So far I am really enjoying working on the stock, perhaps because I am loving how it is progressing and the colour / tiger stripes which are developing...........BUT..................the feckin metalwork has me spitting out every swear word I can think of plus a few which I made up. I am using the Phillips Professional Cold Blue which belongs to my buddy. Now as already said before, you are supposed to dip the item in a tray or tank after taking apart all the pieces but as that is above my head, I have been applying the 'blue' on a well soddened cotton wool mo
  8. Ian at Blackwood Outdoors, owns this forum so perhaps you should ask him........
  9. As the first coating of Tung oil has not completely dried in, I have just taken a couple of photos hopefully showing the colour change. I hope to put a second coat of oil on tomorrow as the weather looks pretty dire so I doubt that I will be going sea fishing although the sea is only 5 mins away so I might just go for the hell of it. I can always coat it later in the day. I have also been addressing the metalwork today with assorted wire wool grades which has removed the rust but there seems to be a lack of 'gun blue' products out there which have good reviews. My buddy brought a bottle o
  10. Is it John Bowkett who was heavily involved in the design of the BSA Ultra or am I getting confused in my old age..... Phil
  11. I know how much you liked the tactical stock Jimmy but I confess even though I have had two Impacts, I am not keen on tactical looking guns. In this form Jimmy it looks so much better in my humble opinion. Phil
  12. First coat of pure tung oil is on which has produced an aqua marine shade of greeny blue which I must say looks really nice. Tomorrow afernoon after clay shooting a second coat will go on. I am letting it dry at the moment and I will pop on an up to date photo after two coats although I will take some photos at each stage for me but don't worry I won't bore you all with endless piccies. Phil
  13. I agree the dye has enhanced the darker areas and look quite good now. Tung oil is going on later today, might as well use what I have rather than going to buy varnish.
  14. Well most of the day I have been lightly sanding and wire wool treatment to get the stock nice and smooth and so to the colour. Yes blue was the favourite all along although red got close but blue won. On the stock, I had thought of applying colour with a cloth as I would have done had the dye been spirit based but as it was water based and I didn't know how well it would penetrate the wood surface, I decided to use a brush which seemed to work very well in my eyes. Now 3 coats of colour applied and a gentle smoothing with 000 grade wire wool, it is now ready for oil or varnish, still thinki
  15. Don't worry as I didn't take it that way at all, I have not done a stock from the start, only to refresh a shotgun stock so it is still a learning curve.
  16. Photo to follow after a second coat of dye is applied
  17. Decision made.................................IT'S BLUE.
  18. Yes Jimmy has used wood bleach to good effect but I am quite convinced that I simply have imperfections in the stock as I can see the pattern going right through the stock when viewing the butt. I use True Oil on my shotguns when needed so I am familiar with the product although I have never done one from scratch as you and Jimmy clearly have. I am still not sure about the oil finish as varnish will also bring the detail out and I can lightlly sand / Wire wool between coats to get a good finish as I have done in the past however I agree an oil finish is a thing of beauty but with the flaw
  19. These are the two stains I have rubbed onto some wood with a cloth, the right hand side has had two coats and whilst oil or varnish will bring out the grain and colour bear in mind it looks a bit weak at the moment, Which would you choose ??? Phil
  20. Yesterday I made a start with stripping the stock using Screwfix own brand paint/varnish stripper which is water washable so no smells or nasty slop to get rid of although I had to keep our 5 cats out of the way. You can see on the last set of photos that there are some dark areas which look like stain from a previous period and after a number of texts with my old pal, our Jimmy, I decided to completely apply the paint stripper again today but the dark areas were still there. Looking at the butt end, i could see the pattern from the dark areas were carried right through the stock onto the oth
  21. Same as that Jimmy. Meeee as tackle tart, that will be the day
  22. You should have bought one of the springers I had for sale for a pal of mine but he took them back leaving me with just this 77.
  23. I had an update price for cerekote finish which has gone up to £145 and needs completely stripping down in order that each section can be treated in it's own right. Well as I have said before, I am not very good with mechanics, NO, I am shit at mechanics so taking it all apart and then trying to put it back together is not for me in any bloody way. I am really not sure what to do with the metal work, I will sleep on that when I have cleaned it with wire wool and possibly 2500 grit emmery paper. Just about to make a start with paint stripper on the stock Phil
