As the first coating of Tung oil has not completely dried in, I have just taken a couple of photos hopefully showing the colour change. I hope to put a second coat of oil on tomorrow as the weather looks pretty dire so I doubt that I will be going sea fishing although the sea is only 5 mins away so I might just go for the hell of it. I can always coat it later in the day. I have also been addressing the metalwork today with assorted wire wool grades which has removed the rust but there seems to be a lack of 'gun blue' products out there which have good reviews. I know how much you liked the tactical stock Jimmy but I confess even though I have had two Impacts, I am not keen on tactical looking guns. In this form Jimmy it looks so much better in my humble opinion. Phil

First coat of pure tung oil is on which has produced an aqua marine shade of greeny blue which I must say looks really nice. Tomorrow afernoon after clay shooting a second coat will go on. I am letting it dry at the moment and I will pop on an up to date photo after two coats although I will take some photos at each stage for me but don't worry I won't bore you all with endless piccies. I agree the dye has enhanced the darker areas and look quite good now. Tung oil is going on later today, might as well use what I have rather than going to buy varnish.

Well most of the day I have been lightly sanding and wire wool treatment to get the stock nice and smooth and so to the colour. Yes blue was the favourite all along although red got close but blue won. On the stock, I had thought of applying colour with a cloth as I would have done had the dye been spirit based but as it was water based and I didn't know how well it would penetrate the wood surface, I decided to use a brush which seemed to work very well in my eyes. Now 3 coats of colour applied and a gentle smoothing with 000 grade wire wool, it is now ready for oil or varnish, still thinki

Don't worry as I didn't take it that way at all, I have not done a stock from the start, only to refresh a shotgun stock so it is still a learning curve.

Yes Jimmy has used wood bleach to good effect but I am quite convinced that I simply have imperfections in the stock as I can see the pattern going right through the stock when viewing the butt. I use True Oil on my shotguns when needed so I am familiar with the product although I have never done one from scratch as you and Jimmy clearly have. I am still not sure about the oil finish as varnish will also bring the detail out and I can lightlly sand / Wire wool between coats to get a good finish as I have done in the past however I agree an oil finish is a thing of beauty but with the flaw

These are the two stains I have rubbed onto some wood with a cloth, the right hand side has had two coats and whilst oil or varnish will bring out the grain and colour bear in mind it looks a bit weak at the moment, Which would you choose ??? Phil

Yesterday I made a start with stripping the stock using Screwfix own brand paint/varnish stripper which is water washable so no smells or nasty slop to get rid of although I had to keep our 5 cats out of the way. You can see on the last set of photos that there are some dark areas which look like stain from a previous period and after a number of texts with my old pal, our Jimmy, I decided to completely apply the paint stripper again today but the dark areas were still there. Looking at the butt end, i could see the pattern from the dark areas were carried right through the stock onto the oth

I had an update price for cerekote finish which has gone up to £145 and needs completely stripping down in order that each section can be treated in it's own right. Well as I have said before, I am not very good with mechanics, NO, I am shit at mechanics so taking it all apart and then trying to put it back together is not for me in any bloody way. I am really not sure what to do with the metal work, I will sleep on that when I have cleaned it with wire wool and possibly 2500 grit emmery paper. What the hell are good friends for Jimmy. I popped into the rfd on Saturday and in the rack was a 77 blue laminate which looked stonking but of course as a laminate it will look good anyway and I know mine will not look as good but I do fancy it in blue. When I pick up my rimmy which is on hold until my variation comes back, may well be a candidate for a green stock but we will see. I am hoping to get stuck in on Thursday as I have quite a few jobs to get out of the way, the Xmas trimmings and outdoor lights are now all back in the loft so that is one out of the way. Phil

I know Jimmy, Mark told me he would not part with it. I will never use this for hunting, just for wet cold days on the indoor range or in the garden, pcp or rimmy for hunting. I am thinking that if the metalwork cleans up well enough, I may just have it oiled and not try to add colour back into it, not what you would do Jimmy but I am sort of used to seeing the finish without a black sheen........................ we will see.

Before I start properly, I have lightly rubbed the barrel with some wire wool I picked up from the rfd which lifted all the surface rust and I will try on the chrome pellet port although I really dont think that is going to get any better. I had considered having the metalwork dipped / coloured (can't remember what the process is called ) YES I CAN......... Cerekote but the price quoted was £135 and I just do not think it is worth paying out that much so I will consider my options in that area when I have cleaned it off as best I can.

As some of you know I was given an unloved HW77 in the summer of 25 which needs the stock sorting and the metalwork has rust all over however this bloody old wreck is a tack driver, even in my hands, so it would be an awful shame to leave it looking so sad. I had a chat with my good friend, our Jimmy as to what needs to be done and decided to leave it until the winter is on us for a project........................ well winter is here, 3 degrees today so it is time to get started and I will possibly ask again for a bit of advice Jimmy if I am not to happy the way things are going. A short time ago, I sold my .22lr Tika and fac air as they were not getting the use THEN we hear about the 'leaders' in charge of our nation want to bring shotguns into fac status ( which of course will not make even the slightest difference to public safety ) but nevertheless I thought I needed to keep my firearms ticket in use so hopefully will help if this change of rules comes about and the fact that I have a few large rabbit perms so a rimmy will be used again.
