  1. My old 1/2 bred collie-grey would stalk day time rabbits..... but then my bull-grey x saluki-grey does too
  2. Looking back when i was a skint teenager (as opposed to a skint adult) and i remember worrying if the collarless ferret had come out and buggered off whilst i was digging to the collared 1... soon saved up enough for some nice shiny new collars
  3. Keep yer chin up mate....s he could be just as easy sat by some old dears fire (eatin her pet cat!)... Ive known a few lost dogs turn up after a couple of weeks.. Good luck finding her
  4. The bitch on the right is so similar to mine that if she wasn't sat by the fire in the kitchen, id go check her kennel
  5. When I was a kid I had a 3 legged sheepdog that would catch rabbits fairly regular, my dad was gunna shoot him after the accident, so think yourself lucky that your not from round 'ere!! Good luck with the injury tho... Think postitve + don't try too much too soon
  6. I had a ferret vasectomised in the summer mate, there was no mention of alternative methods
  7. mice and squirrels are illegal quarry for dogs these days... but ye im sure that's what my old granddad used to do
  8. Depends what ground you are ferreting mate, If your on nice open fields then 4z will do, if your in a bramble patch or thorn hedge use the trawler net stuff
  9. same mate, even with hounds we are pushing very few to ground.... then typical yesterday out ferreting and the lurcher cold marked 1 in and ran another 1 later on.... typical- no terrier with me!!!
  10. Had a "lovely" day today with her, she cant expect me to saty in tomoz, can she?? Especially since the weather forecast is crap for the end of the week????
  11. Tried it mate, she took it off me and gave it straight back lol
  12. I was supposed to go for dinner with the mrs today, so I just planned a quick dash out with the ferrets and dogs for a couple of hours this morning about 9... Got home at about 3 this afternoon!!!! Apparently if the same thing happens tomorrow/boxing day then the dogs have got to go..... I'm dreading telling her im off with the hounds on boxing day! If anyone has room for a 5" 9 brunette around 12 stone woman 27 years old, itd be greatly appreciated ..... and none of this "if only you were closer" bollocks!
  13. Ive done it a couple of times, usually I put a ferret hutch in front of the kennel so the dog sees the ferret all the time, but more importantly sees me handle ferrets without any excitement... after a day or two depending on the dog, hold the ferret nd let the dog sniff it...... mind your ferret though, cos if it isn't used to dogs sometimes they bite the dog!!!!!
  14. Funny you should say that Tomo.... I was ferreting a week last sunday, and got a mark on the mk3 at 5ft... I thought that itd be a doddle as it uasually reads nearly twice the usual depth. not this time D'oh!
  15. If they've been fed on rabbits should help, but still no guarantee.... I took 2 litter brothers out today, both reared exactly the same- one was flying straight to ground and I dug him out in the first burrow, his brother was reluctant to enter occupied burrows, but keen to rag a dead rabbit.... hunting is an art, not a science so you never know what'll happen!! try em a few times and see! good luck!
  16. sheep marker should be ok.... I gotta blue and a red hedgehog in my garden.....
  17. I was talking to a lad the other day who reckons he sells whippet pups at £750.... He then told me he shoots rabbits to feed to them, he got offended when i asked why, for that money I'd expect them to shoot rabbits themselves!!!
  18. I use my lurcher for ferreting with and without nets, lamping, mooching, with hounds (gun pack) and she will also take her when im rough shooting.. tho she aint no lab! at the moment i just have the one dog, im currently looking for another pup to start bringing on.
  19. Best time for a spot like that is a rainy weekday, when most people (should) be in work or the weather puts em off going.... trust me, i do it loads
  20. Hi, i've heard a few people say that they don't feed egg whites to the ferrets?? Is there any reason to this, or are they the same fannies that think egg yolks are bad for humans??
  21. they can do most gundog jobs from plain old retrieving shot game, to use when deer stalking. depends on the cross... the best way to teach em is to start em off with a tennis ball/toy and put it in a tree a few feet of the ground when they are trying to get it shoot it down with an airgun. and buid up to shot gun. They aint like labs tho (unless itr a lab x greyhound..
  22. Last summer I worked on a game farm, i had loads of chicks for the ferts, the ferts love em, but you do have to give em food with a bit more nutrition in it aswell
  23. Depends on all sorts matey, how its bred, if its a big heave type more chance of damage than a whippety type...... also, how much training/time have you put into it?? caution is good, you've waited 9 months don't mess it all up now?? Perhaps ferret a couple of burrows with nets just to let it see.... you have steadied her to ferrets, right??
  24. I started off with a collie x, had a few different types, now i have a bull grey/ saluki grey. Can't really fault her but i'm thinking of going back to the collie crosses again.. but maybe 1 with a dash of bull?? There is something special about them, isn't there???
