Labrador X Greyhound First cross

What are people’s thoughts on the Lab Greyhound first cross? 
 

I’ve only heard stories from the 80s of people running these type from older boys. Don’t see or hear of any, only one I have seen is a lass in the dales who runs a lab grey X Collwhipgrey and looks superb (lamping and picking up / works water) 

I have already got my self a greyhound from irish coursing lines ready, she’s due in 3-5 weeks. I’ve lined up a well bred black working lab too. 

I have a CollieWhippetGreyhound that is fairly decent and retrieves to me but doesn’t rush back (understandable he’s very explosive so uses a lot to catch and catch’s well) and he’s 3/4 whippet greyhound and only 1/4 bearded collie so not heaps of stamina anyway like a half cross . But doesn’t run and bring it me back and put it in my hand direct every time  which is what I want.  I can catch 5-8 with him before giving him a proper break and just let him catch his breath inbetween moving field to field. 

a lab grey makes sense to me, good feet, smart, loves water, loves to retrieve, dark coat, good coat, obident, loyal and athletic and some speed and fire from the grey (obviously not bull fire, i only want it to pick up for me and lamp rabbits)  … to me the ideal poaching dog??? 

im not after a fast dog, just fast enough to catch rabbits doesn’t need to be a pocket rocket I’ve already got that type for rabbit. I want a ultimate poachers mate.

I had a motorbike accident and my knee is f****d at only 27, I get about but would make life a lot easier if a dog ran back and passed it me instantly to my hand.. plus you’d catch even more, I catch enough with the collwhipgrey but we always want more 

anyway, I’m on with it… and shouldn’t be long. Just wondering what people think and stories they know or personal experiences of this type.

There is a book with abit about the cross in I just can’t quite remember which book, imo if they were tried and tested they would be the main go to dog, instead it’s the trusty collie xs of various percentages, fair play to you for trying it but it’s like trying to reinvent the wheel,

Lad off here bred some lab x Lurchers a couple of years back. They looked nice things. No reason why it shouldn’t  work. A lot of people use 1/2 crosses of various types. If you get the right lab and a decent greyhound then I think they would make a decent worker. My mate has a dog that is 1/4 GWP x lab. Uses it for most things, beating, picking up,wildfowling. I’d take a chance if that went over a decent greyhound.

I think they would be a great cross of bred properly. 
The best coursing dogs are not first cross Saluki/greys. They are lone bred for 30/40 years to produce the better versions. 
so if the same was done with labs I think it would really work.. 

I do a bit of bush beating and I’ve not seen a Lurcher that hunts as hard a good lab.. (not the fat useless labs, but a Propper one) 

If a lab had more speed, they would catch some gear.. I’ve seen them smash through the thickest over cover, and still work 6 hours later, wet through and freezing cold. 
Now I love my Lurchers, and mine have good noses, finding all sorts of game, from the fells, to marshes to woodland… but they don’t hunt as good as a good Lab.. 

maybe not the best cross for lamping, but for hunting and retrieving I think it would be good.

There was around me when I was growing up. Had to have her legs pinned due to breaking them at a young age. She was a top class bitch in fur and feather. They nicknamed her the exocet as she was fast, also she was good at getting upto and turning stags during the rut. She loved catching them by all accounts.

Thats the only photo of her i have, I used to take her lamping, ferreting mooching as a young lad. She knew more than me and was a great bitch to make a keen young lad stay keen. Yep that's me with me hand around her. The good old days lol

neighbour had one when we were kids in the 70s, first cross black dog, he took everything available, rabbits, hare, fox, and feather. he was racy built with labrador head, my only concern would be a lot of them being to heavily built, good luck.
