Born Hunter 17,910
So, on Thursday morning while on holiday I woke up to a voicemail from a police officer informing me that my house had been broken into on Wednesday night. I’ve since found out that it was three masked males of foreign origins who ransacked it leaving once disturbed by my neighbour. I’ve basically got no information from the police at this time and don’t really want to discuss any further details before I’ve spoken to them when we return. However, in line with other security improvements Im seriously considering now taking on a dog for personal/family protection. My single biggest concern right now is how do I prevent and mitigate a home invasion by a mob of men from god knows what shithole if god forbid my partner and our 9 month old son are home alone… I have to travel with work, 3-4 weeks ago I was in Stockholm for a week and will be travelling again shortly. I have an office/home based 9-5 and the dog would be kennelled/in the yard with my others at this time. The dog would be a complete all rounder, accompanying me stalking, running pens out, dogging in, forestry work but none of that is my job just to be clear. Got to be sound with the spaniels and around friends so needs to have a well balanced head. Also preferably of a smaller type but function here is priority. When I’m away this thing will live in the house and I need it to give my family a fighting chance. Now, I’ve admired Dutch herders for a while but also like smaller type stamp of GSD. Got an ex keeper mate that has a very sensible male Mali and another keeper mate that has several GSDs. But looking for wider advice. PS. I realise that we were probably targeted because we were known to be out of the house which of course reduces the risk. However a mob of masked foreigners invading my home is next level for me so I’m treating how I handle it as such.

The breeder who bred my bitch doesn't show anymore. One of her dogs she bred has become a cadaver dog. Same age as my bitch 4 ment to be doing really well. Just show people underestimate the fine tuning of these bull breeds. I've seen this before but great to be reminded mate. To these idiots carrying guns. To some the bull breed is a status. But this clever dog here is a status to say were more than that.

I have the option of keeping it away but it needs to take the role of guardian so I figure it can’t be treated the same as the other dogs. What I can say though is the dog will be there to reduce risk not increase it. If it becomes a risk in itself I’ll shoot it like I would any other dog. But I want to avoid all that by making good choices.
Pardus 1,611
No good in a pen if you want it to do it's job mate, it needs to be a house dog first and foremost, I'd love to say Akita but I'd be lying because it is a nightmare when they blow their coats. I'd go for a mastiff if that's what I was looking for.

I know a family that live very rural that love them but two of theirs failed to stop them getting burgled and the ones I’ve met have been ignorant as f**k. I like trainable biddable dogs that equally chill out when I do, like my spaniels. Agree with the kennel thing. But if I’m about I’m not so concerned. This dog will be where it’s needed when it’s needed and will have to be intrinsically adaptable.
Born Hunter 17,910
Although sticking it in this pen would be ideal

First and foremost, I’m deeply sorry to read this mate…..I hope you and your family are not too shaken up, I know you were away (thank god) but all the same it’s a terrible thing for a family to have to deal with. I regret to inform you that before I moved this had become just a common thing. In the incidents that happened round me not all of the family’s were away, in fact people being there don’t bother these animals one little bit…..just be thankful you were away because plenty round my old way were brutalised in the most hideous way. Im not trying to make a bad situation worse, just telling the truth. A dog, imho, will hopefully give you and your family some comfort but I have to tell you these gangs don’t care about a dog themselves, they just kill them and that’s it. You on the other hand have to spend your life managing a man work dog around a child, something that in my opinion will require almost constantly being switched on and vigilant. It’s a shit no win situation, nothing to be done about it, that’s just the place Britain is. Sorry to be so negative, I’d like to say “yes that’s works” to you but I can’t because I’ve lived in an area where this became an almost every month or week thing and I’m fully aware of how these people operate.

Without a doubt, Akita's are very ignorant dogs and just don't take well to training, but they are natural guard dogs. A Mastiff would be more obedient and are natural guard dogs as well. You say you want it to be a field dog as well, have you considered an Airedale Terrier, sounds just the dog you are after?

Turkish Kangal are ment to be great family dogs aswel as guarding. The ones you see most over here on adds aren't like the big fuckers you see on youtube over the water. f***ing massive some of them. And look intimidating too.
scotty12 3,855
Home - DDR Guard Dogs DDRGUARDDOGS.COM Have a look on the above link mate. all depends what your after if you need an adult instantly or willing to bring a pup on personally I would want one from a pup so you have that personal bond with the family from the off wouldn’t 100% trust bringing in a fully trained adult. I know what wilfs saying they can just kill the dog ect bust most people on the rob are looking for an easy fix if you’ve got a half decent dog and your neighbours ain’t you bet there going to the neighbours your options are splashing on a dog that’s already fully trained ? buying a pup and sending it away for full protection training buying a pup and let it bond with the family then send it off for basic commands like bark on command etc etc.

They are horse sized, a fella near my old man had a pack of them, he gave one away to a local lad because it was getting bullied by the rest, still, that's as big as a Saint Bernard.
