Oak windows advice please

I got lots of external oak windows that were treated to osmo before fitting, they went black grey after a while looke bad so the painter sanded and varnished them ??? Now look a bit dull . What’s the best stuff to put on em please boys. Cheers

Some kind of oil.Maybe Teak oil

Thinking back to when I was in the game, we used Sadolin a lot. Used on all hardwood frames. Good finish and kept its colour. Don’t know if it’s still used. Jok.

Homebase sells it but, you can buy it cheaper on line.

Yep Tung oil is good as well.I know my pal whos a proper old school carpenter and Joiner who does a lot of specialist conservation stuff with oak told me never to seal it with paint of varnish but use some kind of oil.

rub a good oil like linseed into it,give it a few coats,then seal it up with a clear varnish , personally I'd not use the shiny type

We’ve just fitted a set of exterior green oak doors to a property in Bath at the owner request .Got the chap to sign a disclaimer as I’m not going back and forth every week  to plane them then add on an inch of stopper on a month later .

Hes had them treated with some oil that allows it to breath .

I've used that osmo oil on all of the internal wood here, my mates a chippy and said it is the bollocks... 

Not used it on any external wood though (oh 1 oak lintel)...

Cheers  boys osmos great but I think for external stuff it’s bollox oaks overpriced and looks shit after a while a mate had a cantilever gate made out of a hardwood and it looks great yeArs after can’t remember the name maybe sepaly or something???

Its Sapele,  its a good exterior wood....ive only used the osmos stuff for worktops.

I'm looking at having a few windows made in wood for a cottage here, 2 of them are arched type, the current ones are rotten so rip out and start again... was thinking oak, but will look at alternatives now I think
