First Swallow

I'd always thought we'd get them later than you guys in the south, but we get them in middle to late March regularly in South Scotland.

Certainly  enough insect life for them this week.

A lot of it is to do with the favourable winds, birds will delay migration rather than fly against the wind so probably some good wind streams bring them early ?

Watching two pairs of magpies, having a munch on my grub, yesterday. One pair fukked off one way. The others I never really noticed. Wondered that they weren't nesting yet, being both pairs are out and about. Didn't think a great deal more of it.

Yesterday evening, just standing out there, giving it the 'king of all I survey' bit. When I surveyed something in the tree behind my stables ..... Cheeky fukkers!

Went back to the gravel pit several mornings with camera only to be told by a bird watcher the sand martins only arrive on the evening so missed that, then saw my first pair of swallows flashing around the marina yesterday afternoon ran in and grabbed my iPad to get some pics only for them to feck off before I got back out there ????

I heard a cuckoo near to where I live in SW France on 24th March and heard a hoopoe calling every day from the 25th. We saw cuckoos and hoopoes in the following days, but no swallows or martins even though the bats had come out of hibernation. Then we came down to Spain last Friday and there were a few swallows and swifts about, more each passing day. The other day I heard a single nightingale and by yesterday there were dozens singing. It has been a strange year for bird migration.
