SheepChaser 8,091
Another thing people forget about dairy. Below is a Hereford x steer out of an organic dairy cow. She produces a load of milk and also this calf which will be fattened on organic grass and go into the food chain. The alternative is a lovely image of some small holder suckler cow rearing it’s calf ..... but they keep that cow all year for that one calf. The dairy cow has the milk, the calf and also at the end of her life goes into the food chain. Think about over her lifetime how much food in terms of milk, cheese, cream, ice cream, milk powder, beef, leather, bone meal etc that animal produces over its life. I own a 3-4 acre natural wood, there is a diverse range of plants on the woodland floor, light can penetrate and generally everything does what it should. In amongst the forestry, nothing lives !…….it’s a lifeless desert on the ground. It wrecks the land. South Wales valleys
SheepChaser 8,091
A lot of folk also seem to forget conifer plantations are cut down...... with big machines..... and then processed with more machines ..... etc etc. And then that area is re planted and does little good for another 20 years. Iirc they said it’s not cow farts that are the main problem but cow burps. And rather than bang the vegan drum they considered solutions including feeding seaweed based diets etc. It was refreshing. They can also feed additives that make the rumen more efficient, thereby getting milk out of the cows for less methane produced…….but it goes against the green narrative….

So tree planting takes 20 years to get to the point where it is sequestering decent amounts of carbon. Trees are also a bigger fire risk. That may not matter in most of the outskirts of the UK but in the pennines and peak district the moorland has burnt for weeks on end of the past few years......now they want to cover a tinderbox in trees and scub cover. We have 2 small plantations burnt out on our local Moor. Now the water board have stopped burning fire breaks in, moving the 24hr a day fire watchers (gamekeepers and farmers) off the land and stick a million trees on it. There's been at least 12 out of control arson/wildfires on that moor in 20 years. Local businesses can contribute to the cost of the trees. So the businesses can off set their carbon. They don't actually produce less carbon remember. And once this area of land is left smoking and barren, the trees up in smoke and the streams full of burnt run off. We also have to replace the lamb it once produced, by importing it from the otherside of the world.

It is simply not true at all. Same with the indoor vs outdoor debate for livestock. Folk want all outdoors but I have both and I see who’s happier from about now until March When it comes to farming I really can’t see how livestock is worse than arable ?…….modern industrial arable farming is absolutely terrible for the environment.

It's been proven time again you cant survive optimally without mest, you eventually will starve to death an go loopy from no vitamins an minerals. Add up all the cows in the world an tell me China or the usa ain't pumping more shit out? The reasons there blaming the cow is: methane is the gas that they can quickly and easily target with least amount of resistance. It suits the green agenda. It is probably the only gas they might be able to limit production of in the medium term. What they won’t tell you is cow’s fed on a grain diet (straights) produce less methane than grass fed cow’s, and agriculture only accounts for 5% of GHG produced world wide yet it’s getting 95% coverage of the bad press…I wonder why?
