If I was getting a gsd I'd get a bitch .. every gsd  I've seen (admittedly not many) with a problem as been a male ..but could it also be the environment it's living in or the people around the animal ..

a mate had a male at a lock up on a chain and nobody could go near that dog unless it was due a feed , soon as bowl was full you pushed it over to the dog with a stick FFS .. but the lads dad took a liking to the dog ? and took it to his farm where he already had a gsd bitch . Dog was a different animal never an aggressive moment out of it let any body pet it dog was free to roam about the place , only time it kicked off was if the bitch did first when someone was about ..

I’d be tempted for a staffy perfect with kids

The only thing that would put me off a GSD is the hip and spine problems as they get older.   Walshies dog looks good and, sounds good from his posts - maybe look along those lines and give

Holding strong money mate won’t get one cheaper then a grand that’s even for a scrap yard type

lol , made me laugh   mate, good dog that was then lol, pity you couldnt chain him up in the day , and loose him out at night , my dogs live outside in kennel/run  , but ive thought few times now i am getting older and only got 50% of me hearing now , if end up on me own in latter life, prob a good gsd  type dog, would be very useful pet in the house, but they do 1/2 feckin molt bad, Buck my 1x gsd x grey , sheds quite bad, and  not got the full coat like pure gsd got, maybe even one of them tosa on the guard dog post, the smaller types  they good guards and bark fair bit  , no more dog hair lol  , know   plenty of x bred gsds typs in the pound  they guard your house deff

He was a brilliant dog around family. Soft as a brush but strangers he didn’t tolerate them he’d already had the delivery driver who just walked into the garden then the JW they just couldn’t take the risk if it was a kid it could of been a lot worse

they are great dogs though In the right hands

keepdiggin....i got the greatest pleasure at pointing that rifle straight at his head and pulling the trigger...and im not a cruel man,but i walked away with this relief and a big wide grin...my son was with me andd he said thank fuk hes gone

My last lurcher was like that, I think the girl in the vets was ready to pass me a tissue or give me a hug but I just wanted to pay my bill and go home to breathe my big sigh of relief.

Bet they'd be spot on as a companion dog, I'd have a half x faster than a pure any day.... What's the other bit of them I wonder

I don't know they just told people to contact them if they're interested. Some half crosses of many breeds can make stunning dogs. I can remember in around 94 there was a male Akita X Bullmastiff in the village, it was a beauty.

Cheers c green I'm after something with a sound temperament that can be sound with kids or am im aiming in the wrong direction I'm open to any views as I don't know much about them

You state that you've had x years experience with dogs so surely then you must know that any dog can turn.  I'm sure they any vet will tell you that even the smallest toy dog can and will bite under circumstances and you want an Alsatian cos your boy wants one.! but you don't know anything about them.!!!  Only dog that has ever bitten me is an Alsatian.  sly b*****d came in around and got me from the side in my thigh.  If the owner hadn't got in back under control I would have shot it out of hand on the spot.

I don't need a vet to tell me a small dog can bite under circumstances and yes he wants one is there something wrong with that ? and no I don't pretend to know about them hence why I asked people's views that have owned them to gain more knowledge on the breed what's the point of your post meece

I've got a 5 month old Akita pup and he was as soft as a brush, a little on the timid side to me or so I thought. The Mrs got him a bone and gave it him in the garden. When I went outside and went to stroke him his body stiffened up and he growled. I belted him and took it off him, over the next few days I tested him out and he was still at it on occasions. I put him in his place but you could still see he was in two minds what to do. It shocked me tbh because he was proper soft and was fine when stroked whilst eating his food.

No more bones for him when my kid is around, no dog can be trusted at the end of the day.
