Well our first shoot of the year went well. It was cold but dry and a bit of sun appeared. Bag was 122 head comprising of 57 duck 56 pheasant 7 partridge and 2 pigeon. My own contribution wa

It’s been frosty the last couple of mornings, it’s very welcome , hopefully it will kill a few bugs . Unfortunately the Maize and cover crops don’t like it and they will soon be unviable as a drive .

You had a better night than me, I went back to the shoot to try and catch up with that fox that was educated 3 times last week ? not a fox to be seen, it looked perfect for it, no moon and a stiff breeze, but no fox, did see a dozen fallow and 7 humbugs, one of the badgers came within 10 foot of us, he was a big bugger and looked in tip top condition

Today’s outing would be to my mates families farm after a doe with foxhunter, we got there mid afternoon giving us a good couple of hours before sunset. The weather was ideal for it and expecting to see deer along the boundary that has a stream with good cover along it, that’s where we headed, setting off we walked through a strip of game cover where a dozen or so pheasants got up and headed to the wood. Along the bottom although there was plenty of slots in the mud we didn’t see a deer and as the sun was going down we headed back towards the wood, glassing along the way we came to the last field before the boundary of the wood. As we got a third of the way across the field towards the wood, FH glassed a roe, as I looked I could see a second one, this time a small buck, then a third, another doe. Giving it a couple of minutes the decision was made to take the doe we seen first when it presented a shot, which it did a moment later, crosshairs behind the shoulder and down it went on the spot, it was paced out to 110 FH paces, on closer inspection the shot was a little far back so a zero check will be needed on the .243. Back to the farm and after a quick chat with the farmer and his dad it was off to drop the doe off at longshanx’s house and home for a cup of tea and a bit of David Attenborough

a massive thank you to FOXHUNTER again for been a deer magnet and keeping me right, I’m going to have to find a way to repay him for his help ?

Thanks for the write up Stav . Good afternoon by the sound of it . I must get my arse motivated. The chicken farm are still keeping their birds in and I’ve not had a call from the lambing yet . There will be cubs about now , they will be being born as I write this . So unless it’s essential , I will give the foxes a miss .
I can’t get into deer shooting either the bucks have cast and are in velvet and the does are pregnant with the foetus too far developed. So it only leaves barren does or youngsters. The rifles are gathering dust at the moment .
