Failed workers?

Recommended Posts

Something I've been pondering about whilst bored at work, is there many failures in none hunting working dogs? It's not something you ever really hear of, labs that won't retrieve or collies that won't herd? We all know of terriers that won't go to ground or lurchers that can't catch their intended quarry you just never hear of others. Do all Newfoundlands save people from water etc?

Nobody gives a fuk  what you wonder ,

Got a French bulldog here that won't bait a bull now matter how hard I try to make it

Probably because they have partners and children that just want a pet to walk round the park, why do some people come on here to try and provoke arguments and piss people off I wonder ?

There are lots of different standards. Same with any type of work. Not many folks will outright say their dog is a failure, but a honest handler will tell you the dogs failings. It really depends on what a typical handler for that breed/type wants from their dog doesn't it, or for that matter what really they'll accept. There are shit loads of gundog owners that wouldn't stand a chance in a trial, me included. Dare say the same applies to herding dogs and security dogs etc etc.

For instance. If a lab doesn't retrieve most would consider that a total failure. But then again if that dog is steady as f**k and can work birds out of cover real business like and not lose it's head then many folks would find that animal a worthy worker.

At least the obsession with FTch breeding keeps the blood somewhat tested.

The pet market is the market for all failed dogs, from undershot show stock to failed workers, why else would anyone ever think of breeding a spaniel or lab with a poodle, it's not as good as any of the parents if the parents were doing what they were bred for but they are not, a failed lab and a dogs home poodle brings you a grand a pup and no one will ever ask if the parents were any good,

Plenty of gun shy retrievers around , one time they would been shot , but they started to get sold for a token summ, then bred from next thing you know its common,

i got a labradoodle here won’t retrieve and is scared of loud noises and barely likes getting wet but on paper 3/4 poodle 1/4 lab should been a water bird retrieving machine .

Exactly I’ve had working dogs 45+ years but always been pets in the house for wife and kids, it’s been chihuahuas and Italian greyhound for the last 20 odd years so what’s the problem with working men having other breeds of dogs.…
