Pad Badly Cut

Recommended Posts

Quick question people my dogs badly cut his bad pad what do you guys do for this[/quotes stick it back together Asap, I do it on my self as well if you stick the cut bits quickly they will start bonding back together, if you have already left it a while then time is your best friend, not much anyone can do to help you, although your vet will happily relieve you of a few quid for trying

If it's bad the vet may put a stitch or two in it. In my experience the success of stitching this type of cut depends on whether the dog is the type that'll leave the stitches alone if they're covered up. Some dogs pull off any covering and bite the stitches out.

One of mine just had a badly cut toe pad which I glued. The glue had to be re-applied every couple of days for the first week. It's now 3 weeks and the top of the cut (inside of the toe) is closed but the bottom (where it goes through her pad (has still a way to go). I'm wishing I'd gone and got a stitch in it now as the bitch is a tough sort that hasn't even limped or shown pain so would probably have left it in. Hindsight is a great thing.

If the cut is near the edge of the pad, making a thin slice so the blood supply will be limited, the sliced bit will probably shrivel and fall off, whether it's stitched or not. I know this from experience.

(If you glue it superglue is what you use. Get it clean and dry first. Bring the cut together and lightly glue along the outside of it, letting glue get only to the edges of the skin rather than inside the cut).

(and FFS don't glue your fingers to the dog's foot)

Mine managed to do this in early August and I got it stitched. As pointed out above my bitch chewed the stitches out after about four days. Fortunately the bottom half of the wound had bonded quite strongly and didn't fully open again. She was back running again by early September, but if the stitches hadn't been there for the initial healing it would have taken twice as long to heal.

it doesn't look that bad to be honest mate, I have seen far worse, I'd just keep it clean bath it twice a day and put sudacreme on it and maybe even abit of dressing an vet wrap in the day then off at night for first couple of days but i am not a vet so if u are that worried take dog to vets nothing worse than prolonging an injury this time of year

Mine had similar at start of season, keep him off it for a few days and plaster in sudocrem few times a day, then stick to grass only til it's healed properly, I wouldn't go to the vets with that if I were you, no point, just need to let it heal.

Not a fan of giving dogs anti biotics for this but thats me ...One bit of advice I will give you is with this type of injury ...once you think it has totally healed give it another week to 10 days
