How Easy Is It To Start Up

A friend of my son has just been paid off and rather being on the dole is going to start up doing something on his own with a small van he wants to buy from me . How hard is it now to start up something with out much qualification as I start up years ago in scrap and bought a old van and went for it before licences and liability insurance etc . I don't want to put a dampener and fair play to the fella idea but don't think it's as easy now is it ?

As you say fair play to him, I'm sure if he puts the graft in (whatever he chooses) there will be opportunities to make a few quid... a man and a van is a useful commodity... house/shed clears, rubbish clearing, gardening, window cleaning, some diy type works (if he can turn his hand), deliveries... or a mixture of all... its getting your head down and finding the opportunities... far too many doom and gloom merchants around, you've just got to be willing to graft and spot an opening.... "it's there for everyone" (as my old man used to tell me)... good luck to the lad.

think the lads struggling how to start I have decide to give him then van as I don't use it anymore. think he's looking for ideas and how to get contacts as to suppose doing the graft sure he will suss something .

sign writing on a van goes a long way, I sold a van in May with my name and number on it, and I still get two or three calls a week from it, I also picked up a £5.000 job when I stopped for a pint on my way home from the sign writer, it's all smoke and mirrors mate, the more bluff and bullshit you have the easier it is to make money, it's a frame of mind and know amount of qualifications will help, he,s eather got it or not, good luck

it just goes with the turf mate when people see a flat cap and a 20 year old transit tipper they just assume the worse, I,m a bit old to be rolling on the floor with everyone that shouts at me, I think it sort of hurts people thinking your making money from things they can't be bothered to sell themselves, I love it and as people get more and more wasteful it just gets easier, like yourself I have a few other ways of making a living it's just one part of our life cheers

If he needs a bit of extra money to start off there's always seasonal work, with it being Christmas shortly the lads who cut the trees down are on good money, and there always buidling firms willing to pay good money for temporary labourers

Had a bloke used to clear all our sites when I was on the tools... he called himself skippy, had a transit tipper and an axe.

He would charge a small fee for each clearance (cheaper than a skip) and take any scrap he could, he would never get our ally or lead but was happy to rip the thin steel off the composite sheets and all the offcuts of flashings, packer sheets etc... his axe was used for cutting the sheets in half to fit on the truck... was a fit old f****r and grafted... he lived in a lovely house looking over the estuary in Exmouth, it was fairly common knowledge he had a few bob.... what was shit work to everyone else made him a few quid.

Hit the nail there I've seen people throwing nearly new sofas in to skips but slashing them with a knife just so people can't take it away it's stupid and you won't ever change some people sadly

2 years back,maybe 3,i was tipping waste at the local tip,chatted to a man and woman who have or had as maybe they arent there now 2 20 foot shipping containers sited there,they collected anything and everything that had a resale value,old bikes,dyson hoovers,anything and everything that could be scrubbed up or repaired and sold on,they own two houses locally and they dont live in a bad area so property isnt cheap as chips,they make a very good living indeed but to look at them or chat to them they dont look as if they have a penny between them to scratch their arse with,as you said where theres muck theres money,its a truism.

I was watching old police camera program on YouTube last night,and they was. Watching old fella with an transit going round taking stuff from the rubbish points from flats etc,they actually made him put back a really knackered cat scratcher .
