Nuclear war is most probably our greatest threat but I very much doubt it would finish us. It would have to be one hell of a war, beyond the point of destroying the enemy, to render the earth void of life.

I also doubt disease, famine or any other earth born disaster would finish us.

For me the only extinction event that is likely will come from beyond our Earth. And it'd have to be unforeseen, because the yanks, russians and chink individually would direct Trillions into project Orion/Mt Weather/Ark type programs to survive it. Another threat imo though less likely is adapting to become critically dependent on technology to a point where if an event were to occur which suddenly made that tech unavailable we would not be able to adapt to a non tech dependent species again fast enough before extinction.

Interestingly (to people like me, lol), historically it is believed that the human species has been through near extinction events before where our numbers, as an entire species, dropped to number a few tens of thousands.

Don't most species have a life expectancy ,,,I'm not talking about 1 individuals life,,,but as a species,,most species die out or evolve in to somthing..

I've read that something like 97% of the species that have ever lived are extinct. Man has only been around for a relatively short period of time, and wasn't around for an infinitely longer period, so I suppose our extinction would mean a return to normality, as far as the Earth is concerned.
