gnasher16 31,836 Posted Wednesday at 12:08 Report Share Posted Wednesday at 12:08 (edited) Think ive told the story before on here of just about my only recollection of John Fury back in the 80's when he came up against Frank Grant outside John Celabanski's gym in Bradford.... at least another 10 blokes just like me were there who saw it as well,it makes me cringe with embarrassment for Fury when he comes out with this sort of stuff as theres people who were around back then who have seen him with his back against the wall and it wasnt a good look......no problem with his ring career he was an average journeyman pro who did his best like the rest of us nothing wrong with that.....but this caveman stuff he thinks he did outside the ring is f****n sickly quite frankly and i dont know why the lad Tyson allows him to be anywhere around him in press conferences and suchlike, father or not. Despite all his bluster I think tyson is quite a nice soft lad. Camt be hard for john fury to just work his way back in . Probably been doing it all of his life so just the dynamic they have I dont know much about peter fury but the bits I have seen of him talking in interviews he seems a genuinly serious character . Im suprised he hasnt put a stop to john furys antics But the truth probably is that its the price they all pay to keep the money train coming

pesky1972 5,858 Posted Thursday at 16:02 Report Share Posted Thursday at 16:02 I think for some fight fans now all the pantomime and performance is the entertainment, the bout is almost secondary. All the nonsense, and the fact that fight coverage is split over so many platforms now, means I watch much less boxing and have fallen out of love with it a bit. Shame, but as long as someone is happy

Shame, but as long as someone is happy Agree with all that, apart from your very last sentence. I really used to enjoy my boxing, but with the way things are now, as you rightly say, I really can't be bothered by practically any of it.
jukel123 10,171 Posted Thursday at 22:48 Report Share Posted Thursday at 22:48 (edited) Me too. The first contest I remember was Don Cockell v Rocky Marciano in 1955. The whole family listened to it on the radio in the early hours of the morning broadcast from America. I've followed it religiously since the early fifties. It used to be part of our culture, a statement of who we were as a country. Telly used to cover the sport really well. Henry Cooper was a much loved super star back in the day. There were other well respected boxers, household names, which we kids used to look up to. Ali was a God to us. He stuck it on his opponents and the American government too. We had never seen anybody so unafraid of authority. But I'm less interested now than I've ever been. It's too managed, too staged/ hyped and the heavyweight scene is poorer than I've ever seen it. Strangely enough, the British heavyweight scene is pretty good, but imo, all of them, with the possible exception of Itauma, would have struggled to find work as sparring partners in the 70s. I guess when you've been reared on steak and are then served potatoes, it's hard to find an appetite . I hope there's a revival but I can't see it. Cage fighting is gaining popularity all the time and genuine 'hungry' fighters no longer exist. PPV has a lot to do with the sport's demise. If poor kids aren't exposed to the sport, how is it meant to continue? They are literally the lifeblood of the sport. Sorry for the doom and gloom. I'm actually quite excited at the thought of Froch sticking it on the "fighting man" from the " hard road" gobshite bully Fury. Apparently it may happen on the Netflix undercard.
