What these cranks don't realise is that if we all turned veggie it would only lead to more damaging intensive farming to supply us with the protein we need to live ...They really are a bunch of short sighted fuk nuts! ... I wonder how much land it would take to supply the same amount of say soya protein as the protein that's in 1 cow.

I think plant based foods are 4 times less intensive on the land than animal protein based foods, calorie for calorie. Whether we like it or not vegetarianism does seem better for the environment. That doesn't take into account the actual impact on the environment though, just how productive arable and livestock is in calories per acre.

But that's all it has going for it, the health arguments based on life expectancy stats get blown to bits when analysed properly, correcting for all the other factors associated with the general meat eating demographic.

Coming back to the environment, is it even conclusive that the methane produced from factory farming cattle has any significant effect on climate change?

ok good points bh but deforestation to grow these protein crops is a real threat I guess you could argue that the same could be said for grazing land but grazing land is far more species diverse than arable land with a lot less or no pesticides being used surely? and maybe more effort should be made to recycle some of the methane. I guess the only real answer would be a drastic reduction in a certain species ...us!

To be fair, we probably do consume way too much meat......certainly more than we actually need to, but that's the way of the world, consuming more than we need......

I watched something on tv a while ago,,,,about trees that produce nuts,,being better for the land than growing wheat,,,also the flour from the nuts being better for us ,,,especially with all the problems folk have with wheat, gluten ect...

 

And I'm sure more flour was produced from a smaller area of trees,, than acres of fields,,,

 

But then I suppose bread made from nut flower,,,wouldn't be as nice tasting to us wheat lovers

All good points chaps. I could buy the less impact on the environment argument still though, but as we have all pointed out, it's not as simple or conclusive as the veggies would like us believe.

 

And completely ignores those of us that source a large percentage, if not all, of our meat from hunting.
