Blackbriar 8,569
Physical punishment has been banned in schools for many years, and other European countries honour treaties banning all physical punishment of children, both in schools and in the home. But our parliament has always shyed away from passing a law banning the smacking of your own children. Provided you don't leave a mark on the child, action is unlikely to be taken against you, but is that enough ? Do you think smacking should be banned outright, or is it a matter of parental decision ?

truescot 234
IMO your no much of a parent if you have to resort to physical violence to get through to them. I had a dad that was very prone to raising his hands. Thing back then, it was widely accepted. Violence breeds violence. Sends out a very negative message to a kid growing up.

truescot 234
I also got the belt everyday@school. But like I said it was the norm back in those days. I still remember the f***ing welts running up my wrists. How many of you parents these days would accept some c**t laying into your kids. And yes teachers back in those days belted you for no other reason than, they didn't like you. As for bringing it back lol Aye good luck with that one! Kids today would wrap the f***ing belt round thier head.and quite rightly so IMO ! You have no right to lay your hands on anyone regardless if your the kids parent or not. In fact that should be more of a reason why you shouldn't .

BGD 6,437
Smacking as punishment isn't needed and I think if you have to resort to it to control your brats you've failed as a parent but if your kid is say reaching for the hot stove or about to pick up something dangerous the short sharp shock of a clip round the ear is very effective... We don't smack our dogs when training them because we know it usually does more harm than good so why resort to using violence to "train" our children? Saying all that though I don't see why it needs to be banned, educate parents giving them the tools to raise their kids without smacking and we can still punish the real b*****ds under existing child abuse laws. Silversnake 1,099
I don't like smacking my kids but I have done, I agree to a degree you have lost control if you have to resort to smacks more I feel I have not been creative or clever enough to find a better way. I don't think the law needs changing as said if you don't leave marks you are not hurting them too bad which I think is strict enough
