Personaly,.I have always felt that with the Herding type composites,..the genuine first cross is only ever,.. a starting point

I like to see how the initial hybridisation has worked out,.. then maybe take things further

I have never been to Hancocks, nor do I wish to, its just my personal opinion, but i would not wish to line a puppy farmers pockets,

but if I visited I would have a few questions.

Are the broods bred, every Season?

What happens to them, when their breeding days are over?

How much exercise do the dogs receive daily?

What is the quality of feed going into the adults and Pups.

And how much socializing are these litters receiving?

Ronisallah and Shaaark,, buying off tested dogs will always produce better quality genetics, dogs who have tendons, joints, muscles, etc pushed to the limit that have lived to 5+yrs without major injury will always produce a physically healthier offspring, I have owned every ratio of collie cross since the 70's many produced by hancock dogs that were bred from in the 80's, I have never bought one direct from him though, just from some of the better well worked ones, you may get away with the odd generation of non-worked breeders but not for 30 odd years, some of the greyhounds used are thin, small and old, my son bought a pup off the first litter woody sired over a very old second rate bitch a few years back, her first illness killed her, he has since bought another sired by del boy over a young 26" strong greyhound bitch, this new pup is a lot healthier all round and whether she will be any good is yet to be established, you will ask why did he buy another ?? as I did, but there are simply not many others being bred if that's what you want, there are some health problems with "Hancock" lurchers that have not been mentioned so far also, I have seen a few die from brain tumors, simple knocks that may cause a limp or tear in a muscle in other dogs have resulted in breaks in his lurchers, this is where the theory of breeding off unworked dogs fall down, his pups lack socialising and have a poor diet up till they leave, the dog food is bought in bulk and very poor % wise, we all have choice and nobody makes us buy them but whilst there is demand he will breed them, these are the hard facts and in spite of poor breeding some still make good dogs, given the choice its worker/ worker still for me, WM

I agree with alot of what you say, and wouldn't advocate breeding off small, thin, weak or old stock etc, but physically and mentally sound animals, and while I agree that it's certainly easier to guage the parents, grandparents etc through their soundness in the field, I don't feel it's necessary that the dog you might take on 'needs' to come from working parents. Hope that makes sense

Anthony,.you original question was a wee bit naive,...

 

You ask to hear the opinions from lads who have owned and used dogs, that came via David Hancock,.but,.only if they have something nice to say about their experience..

What you don't want to hear about, is folk who are less than happy, with their purchases,..

 

In my experience,.it is best to listen to everyone's opinions,...good or bad,..then, perhaps do as many have already done,..go to Birmingham and buy a new pup,.or correspondingly,..walk on by....

The only folk I know who have owned them and now don`t rate them are people who were perfectly happy with them at the time, but have now gone on to better things and looking back, saw flaws they didn`t see when they owned the dog.

 

I`ve yet to come across an owner of a current dog who thinks it`s shite.

Phil I have no problem in listening to ppl who have owned a Hancock and it turned out no good or not what they wanted/expected. But I'm not interested in listening to those who will never own one and just comment to try and get an argument going.

If people don't like Hancock's then simply don't post and post on something that is your cup of tea.

got to agree here phil. he asked for positive comments. any thread about hancock dogs always seems to draw in the knockers. looks like he was trying to avoid em.

Phil as you and I both know, sometimes it just does not work that way. The first cross can be out of this world, yet no matter what it is bred with none of the brood seem to live up to the initial cross.

 

Edited to add: Not every first cross makes the grade obviously.

My Hancock 10 half months doing really well, good recall and retrieve. Be lamping with him for weeks now just give him a few runs when out don't want to over do him. He 3/4 greyhound 1-4 beardy boarder.
