tommy9 13
I've got a beddy whippet grey who will go into the thickest of cover she is smooth coated And seems totally fearless of the thickest cover .This little bitch will go anywhere in pursuit of her quarry she seems to have a very high pain threshold I put this down to the beddlington in her I was told she's from the rillington strain . I have two others that won't go into thick cover ,these two tend to work round it waiting for the break. Does anyone else have a lurcher that works thick cover well .? Quote Link to post

Meeks 153
My wee whippet will run through thick cover,he will try get through absolutely anything,he doesn't do that well when rabbits get into cover but gets 10/10 for effort.he is an absolute nightmare when we get home and he's been stung by loads of nettles.its enough to put you off getting another one Quote Link to post
Neal 1,930
I find that some dogs are more adaptable than others and will change depending on circumstances. My last lurcher (kelpie/collie x greyhound) was fantastic in cover...I put this down to his first catch being in cover so he always expected to find on the inside. However, when I bought my first kelpie he just waited on the outside for a bolt...though he never got one! The lurcher was rehomed to a pet home when the kelpie was nearly six and a second kelpie was two. The first time I worked them after the lurcher left they both caught their first rabbits in opposite corners of the same field. It was as though they thought up until then that catching was only his job and now they could take over. Quote Link to post
astrix 12
I have a collie whippet that is the same, he doesnt bat an eye lid of working the thickest of cover but only if theres something there Quote Link to post
paulus 26
2 25tts 70lb dogs that will happily enter any cover, have the ears to prove it Quote Link to post
mackay 3,633
If a lurcher doesn't hunt cover then it's not a lurcher, simply a running dog. 2 Quote Link to post
squab 2,875
thing is theres cover and then theres cover, yeah i like mine to use their nose and get into a bit of cover, crops hedgerows etc but they never going to get in underneath some of the cover i come across where the only way in is following a run,iv had dogs try and all they really manage is to leopard crawl in with back legs splayed out pretty much a worthless exercise when you can use a purpose bred busher along side them for flushing. like i say big difference,iv always liked a dog that will follow quarry into cover while on the lamp, yeah it can get a bit hair raising when you got a fully committed dog but it ups the catch rate and you cant tell them not to lol although sometimes it dam near impossible for them to do so 3 Quote Link to post
