Pups First Night On The Lamp...

Recommended Posts

Took the pup out for a look on the lamp tonight with my mate Jim (TJones on here).

She is just coming 11 months old and hasn't seen the lamp before. She's had a handful of daytime rabbits, mostly mixy, and that's all she's seen.

He took me to a little place down Norfolk he's got permission on with plenty of rabbits about the place.

She started off as to be expected really, a bit bouncy, unsure of the lamp, looking opposite direction to the rabbits and she had her nose down terribly. Probably my fault for having her out with the other dogs every day mooching around hedges and woodland etc.

She missed the first one after a decent little run, if made it under a gate, and then she hunted up for about 30 seconds. It felt like a lifetime. She caught the next 5 or 6 rabbits on the bounce. Retrieve left a lot to be desired and she was dropping them and re-running them quite a lot (she is very soft mouthed).

She missed a run after bagging 5 or 6 and this time was quicker to return. She still wasn't watching the beam but as the night went on she was looking around more and nose was down less. She missed about 4 in total and was coming straight back after missing. The last half a dozen or so that she caught were all retrieved live to hand.

She ran one rabbit down through a flock of sheep, straight through them and missed it as it went through a gap and she came running back not even looking at the sheep. It's great when all the hard work starts to pay off.

She has previously made a couple of noises when running rabbits daytime. Not yapping. More of a whimper. But it was always when other dogs were there and I thought it was a bit of frustration. She was silent tonight though.

Final bag was 16 with about 4 missed.

Cheers Jim, given my pup a good foundation there I think and I now know what we need to work on
