Or the theories that the universe has expanded and shrank multiple times? it could explain what happened at the time of the big bang? the only elemants at the time of the big bang would have been hydrogen and helium.

Yeah, that's one idea.

The immediate events after the Big Bang created Hydrogen and Helium isotopes correct, all other elements we have were created through nuclear fusion in stars.

Religion was invented by very clever people, to further their own aims and to keep the common people in shackles, and discourage free thinking, all the main patriarch based religions are the best fair

One thing is fact when all looks lost and you have a millisecond to contemplate your life it's not god you think about or cry out for think about redemption from ... What enters your head for that bri

Growing up we was told theres 2 things a man doesnt have to justify......his faith or his football team ............for me only a complete ignoramus would mock another mans beliefs and ask him to jus

Makes things massive and frightening to us at present (eg Climate Change) seem unimportant, considering at one point there was f**k all.

In the grand scheme of things temperatures rising a few degrees may be devastating to us but is a bit irrelevant.

Hail woden

Hail Woden :thumbs::thumbs:

Yeah cause paganism is much easier to accept with witches and wise men with special healing powers dancing round a set of stones bollock naked worshiping mother nature and other green men.

"hail Hogwarts"

I dont think you understand much about the paganism our ancestors followed.

.

Perhaps not but that's probably to do with every pagen I have ever met seems to be an expert in why my religious beliefs are riduculas but fail to tell me EXACTLY what the Pagen belief is. When i ask "so tell me what you believe?" in It all gets met with a big smoke screen of god or gods, patriarchhal vs matriarchal different opinions depending who I'm talking to and I have asked this of several pagens I know.

Just to set the record straight about the bible, the new testament is not a book written by a guy in the desert but is a combined series of books (gospels) from several different peoples perspectives of what they witnessed. Just like if ten people went to a football match and sat in different parts of the stadium we would each give our account of what we saw from our perspective, this is a very crude explanation of the new testament.

It's interesting to note historically the apostles after the crucifixion went to all parts of the world to spread the message of the Christianity and what they had witnessed, almost all of them were tortured to death to denounce Christianity and not one of them would deny what they had seen. You'd think if it was all a bit of a story they might have said "oh hold on a minute I was only joking" :hmm:

I said it before and wil say it again each must find their own path to travel

It's hard to explain to someone who hasn't taken time to study them, even more so someone who has been indoctrinated in Christianity.

There are pagans who literally believe Zeus or Thor is up in the clouds creating thunder being pulled along on his chariot by goats,or the world is literally a tree with witches living at the bottom of it,I think they usually call themselves asatruan.

There are feminists who call themselves Wiccan, who are probably just not yet got over the novelty that there exists a religion that doesn't oppress women, but can't seem to find balance and go the to the other extreme and thinks its acceptable to try and oppress men.

And there are people who view the stories about the European gods (Roman,Greek,Germanic,Scandinavian,Gaelic etc) as symbolic.

for example,Most of us agree the European gods are the same gods under different names,Thor is Zeus and Jupiter.

From the eddas we know Thor doesn't interfere with our lives directly, but protects us from the forces of nature,he has red hair and is the biggest and strongest god.

It also happens that Jupiter is the biggest planet in our solar system, its red and its magnetic fields have probably saved our planet from being more than once.

i find it mind boggling that if the universe has expanded to the limit then llets say collapsed and shrank then expanded again just how old would that make the universe?

If that's the case we can never know as we can't measure or see anything outside of our current universe. The question is probably unanswerable.

Alternatively there may be many universes all within some greater mother universe, where energy and physics exists but in a form we don't know of, then under certain circumstances a singularity is formed and the resultant Big Bang forms a new universe with evolved laws of physics, possibly unique.

Right I've read back through what I've written.

What I'm trying to say is; people are asking that if there was nothing where did it all come from. What I have tried to explain poorly is that just because there was a Big Bang doesn't mean that all the energy of the universe didn't exist before. Also that if there indeed was 'nothing' that we don't understand how physics worked then so can't say how you get stuff from nothing. We don't even know if time started with the Big Bang or before...

Simply, we've hit the edge of human knowledge. Which in my opinion is where God always seems to sit in comfort.

Exactly  all the heavier elements are created in stars.

This expansion and contraction theory seems to be holding weight at the moment as they are seeing evidence of it in their telescopes as for an all creator bollox I say but that's my opinion.

Gnasher if you imagine everything in this universe beeing pulled together under gravity into a space the size of an atom then exploding, this is the theory. The catalyst for the explosion cannot be found or even theorised as they have no idea. For me the logic stops when they say it exploded... surely the pull of gravity would keep it's hold on all the matter but what do I know

I thought the idea of the universe expanding and collapsing was out of vogue since it was theorised that dark energy was driving the expansion of the universe and was stronger than gravity.. :hmm: Thought spagettification was now the in thing as to how the universe will end rather than in a 'big collapse..'

Hard to comprehend, but I've just gone back and refreshed my memory a little about what Brian Cox said in that program. Everything that currently exists in the universe (or the ingredients to make it anyway) was there in a single singularity possibly smaller than the smallest subatomic particle we know about in the moments before the bang.

Well be talking string theory next lol

Now this does make sense :laugh:

At the moment though impossible to prove outside of theoretical maths ;)

So were lots of other monumental scientific discoveries that were proved to be true.. :tongue2:

Wyrd is a defining principle of paganism in my eyes similar to karma and fate. What I find interesting is the similarity of all the old religions whether Buddhist Hinduism heathenism they all are underpinned by similar ideas, which I reckon have been understood and believed worldwide for millennium. The 3 desert religions are really very new in comparison and seem against nature. In this day and age people seem to associate religion with either Christianity, Judaism or Islam.

I guess that depends on what you think there was before a universe......nothing is nothing right ?.....space isnt nothing space is something and you cant get something from nothing......didnt Einstein say a cosmic expansion came from a ball of energy that moved faster than the speed of light or whatever.....so what if we had a giant cosmic rewind button back to the start where would it go back to....to have time there has to be a start surely.......the big bang ? being that was where the so called laws we are governed by began it makes sense in space time to have a start......but what about before the start...." before " being a response to time.........if theres no time theres no before if theres no before theres no after so this expansion must have a start time.....yet before the big bang there was nothing ??....nothing as in no thing not a gap,a gap is something we are talking about nothing theres no space or time in nothing !................hence back to the first law of astro physics " out of nothing....nothing comes "........................now i need to have a lie down :D

Bornhunter thanks for your replies mate fascinating stuff  ......i have a mate who hits me with religious stuff every time i see him it actually made me try to learn something about all this so i have something to throw back at him !......trouble is i cant find fault in anything he says hence its leading me in a different direction to science........but its an interesting journey for sure and something thats hard to ignore.
